"Sunshine!" Glitch cried. Tears filled his eyes.

Evan dropped his metal bar. He fell to his knees on the hard floor. He reached out and pulled Glitch into a tight hug.

Glitch was small and bony, but Evan squeezed him like he was the most important thing in the world. Because he was.

"You are alive," Evan whispered into Glitch’s shoulder. "I thought I lost you again."

"Again?" Glitch sniffed. He wiped his nose on his sleeve. "What do you mean again? I have only almost died once today. Well, mayb

The entire ceiling was the clear glass dome. They could look up and see the dark, stormy sky and the toxic green fog swirling outside. In the very center of the massive room, there was one single, huge, round table covered in soft black velvet. This was not a busy casino. There were no slot machines. There were no cheering crowds. This was a private, deadly arena. Sitting around the black velvet table were the competitors. There were only eight chairs. Seven of them were occupied. Evan walked slowly toward the table, his heart beating a steady, calm rhythm. He studied the people he was about to play against. They were the most terrifying, dangerous people he had ever seen. In the first chair sat a woman. She wore a beautiful, sparkling silver dress. But her hair was not human hair. It was a writhing, moving mass of thin, glowing blue fiber-optic cables. The cables hissed and moved like snakes. She was a master hacker, wired directly into the network. In the second chair sat a ma

Glitch pressed the button. The tiny hacker was crying silently, hating to see his best friend in so much pain. Evan slowed time. The gray world swallowed him. He stared at the metal arm. He did not just look at it. He felt the rhythm of the electricity. He saw a tiny, bright blue flash in a wire on the left side of the arm. At the exact same time, he saw a faint orange glow of heat build up near the elbow joint. Evan processed the math instantly. The computer was sending power to the pinky finger, but the elbow motor was preparing to brace for the movement. Evan snapped back to normal time. Before the metal finger could even move, Evan reached his bare hand out and slammed his finger down directly onto the robotic pinky finger. A split second later, the robotic pinky tried to tap the table. But Evan’s finger was already there, holding it down. "He blocked it," Glitch gasped in pure amazement. "The computer chose the pinky, and Evan knew it before the signal reached the motor!"

Evan sat down in a chair across from the metal table. The dead, heavy robotic arm rested on the metal surface. The metal fingers were curled slightly. "What exactly are you trying to do, kid?" Marco asked. The grifter stood nearby, watching carefully. "A human has physical tells," Evan explained, staring at the metal hand. "If a human is lying, their heart beats faster. Their eye twitches. A machine does not have a heart. But a machine runs on electricity. Before a metal finger moves, an electrical signal has to travel from the computer brain, down the wire, into the motor."Evan took a deep breath. "I am going to train my Perception to see that electrical signal," Evan said. "I am going to see the digital micro-expression. I want to know which finger is going to move before the finger actually moves."Marco looked skeptical. "That signal moves at the speed of light, Evan. It happens in a microsecond.""Then I have to be faster," Evan said firmly. "Start the program, Glitch," Evan c

  • Chapter 361

"The tournament begins in exactly three hours at the Glass Lotus," Jax said. "Do not be late. If you run away, the shield stays up forever. Goodbye, Glitch."The screen went totally black. The cockpit was silent. The only sound was the cold wind blowing against the outside of the thick glass windows. "Three hours," Marco whispered. He coughed, holding his broken ribs. "We have three hours to prepare for a suicide mission."Evan turned away from the dead screen. He walked out of the cockpit and into the main cabin of the stealth ship. The cabin was lit by dim blue floor lights. Evan sat down on a white leather couch. He put his face in his bare hands. He was so tired. His brain ached. His muscles screamed. He just wanted to rest. But the world would not let him rest. The Board of Directors was waiting in the sky. Jax was waiting in the shadows. "Evan," Glitch said softly, walking over and sitting next to him. The tiny hacker patted Evan’s knee. "We do not have to do this. We can t

  • Chapter 360

The inside of the sleek black stealth ship was quiet. The only sound was the soft, low humming of the engines. Evan Kennedy stood in the cockpit of the Nightflyer. He looked out the thick glass window. High above them, the giant, glowing yellow energy shield still wrapped tightly around the Zenith Tower. It blocked the path to the Board of Directors. But Evan was not worried. He held the heavy silver signet ring in his hand. He had beaten Jax, the Syndicate Boss, in a game of poker at The Velvet Room. He had won the ring. The ring was the key to turning off the yellow shield. "Glitch," Evan said, his voice full of hope. He handed the silver ring to the tiny hacker sitting in the pilot’s chair. "Turn off the shield. Let's finish this war."Glitch smiled brightly. He took the silver ring. He pulled the frayed, thin wire from his sleeve and plugged it directly into the side of the ring. He connected the other end of the wire to the ship’s main computer dashboard. "Deactivating the sh

  • Chapter 359

Jax stared at Evan’s face-down cards. The Syndicate Boss suddenly felt a massive, crushing wave of pure terror. Evan had not even blinked when the King dropped on the river. Evan looked completely, perfectly relaxed. "You do not have a Ten and an Ace," Jax stammered, sweat pouring down his burned face. "The odds... the math...""I do not care about the math," Evan whispered. "I care about the game. And I am telling you, Jax. If I flip these cards over, you lose everything."Evan let go of Jax’s wrist. Evan reached his hand toward his two face-down cards. The entire casino was completely frozen. Nobody moved. Nobody breathed. Marco’s heart was hammering so loud Evan could almost hear it. Marco knew Evan had nothing. Marco knew Evan was running the biggest, most dangerous bluff in the history of the world. Evan’s fingers touched the edge of his cards. "Wait!" Jax screamed. Jax stood up so fast his heavy chair crashed backward onto the red carpet. Jax was breathing heavily. His e
