Modern architect Adrian never expected his latest project to be a literal death trap. Transmigrated into the ruins of Eden-7—a crumbling outpost in a dying world—he inherits a broken fortress and a sarcastic system with one goal: Survival. As mutant wolves howl at the gates and a ruthless warlord closes in, Adrian must use his knowledge of structural engineering and physics to turn scrap metal into salvation. In a world where safety is a magnet for monsters, can one man build a sanctuary that defies both gravity and extinction?

Chapter 1: Inheritance of Rust

Chapter 1: Inheritance of Rust

The dust inside the ruined office was thick enough to chew. Adrian coughed, waving a hand in front of his face as he stared at the piece of parchment in his grip.

“You’ve got to be kidding me,” Adrian muttered, his voice raspy. “A deed? To this dump?”

[ Status: Ownership Verified. Welcome, Lord of Eden-7. ]

Adrian squinted at the blue holographic screen floating in front of his eyes. “Lord? I’m an architect. I design buildings; I don’t rule ruins. Is this a joke?”

[ System: Memory integration complete. Role: Proprietor/Architect. Objective: Survive. ]

“Survive?” Adrian looked around the office. The ceiling was sagging, held up by a single, rusted steel beam that looked ready to give up on life. “I’m surprised this beam hasn't given up yet. Look at that stress fracture. It’s a miracle I’m not wearing the roof as a hat.”

[ Warning: Settlement Structural Integrity is at 4%. ]

“Yeah, I figured as much,” Adrian said, pushing himself up from the grime-covered chair. “Wait, if I’m the proprietor, what happened to the last guy?”

[ System: Deceased. Cause: Rapid unscheduled disassembly during previous siege. ]

“That’s a fancy way of saying he got torn apart, isn’t it?” Adrian grunted, walking toward the window. He looked out over the perimeter. “This place is a death trap. That wall over there—is that wood or petrified cardboard?”

[ System: Localized materials: Compressed industrial waste. ]

“Perfect. Just perfect,” Adrian sighed. He tapped his temple, memories of stress-points and load-bearing calculations swirling in his head. “If I reinforce the base with cross-bracing, maybe we last a week. But where am I getting the steel?”

[ System Notification: Threat Encounter initiated. ]

[ Countdown: 168 hours until Mutant Siege. ]

“Seven days?” Adrian shouted at the empty room. “I need a month just to clear the mold! How am I supposed to build a fortress in seven days?”

[ System: Prioritize survival. Protip: Walls are useful. ]

“Thanks, Siri. Very helpful,” Adrian rolled his eyes. He stepped out of the office and onto the gravel path. “Hey, what’s that sound? Sounds like high-frequency friction.”

[ Warning: Gate perimeter breached. Proximity: 100 meters. ]

Adrian sprinted toward the rusty iron gates. “I didn't even authorize an entrance! Who’s there?”

A woman’s voice screamed from the other side. “Open the gate! Please! Open it now!”

Adrian grabbed the manual lever, his eyes widening. “Who are you? Do you know how much this gate affects the structural tension?”

“Shut up and let me in!” the woman yelled back. She sounded like she was sprinting through a meat grinder. “They’re right behind me!”

“Who is ‘they’?” Adrian asked, straining as he tuged the lever. “This thing is jammed. Rust has seized the gears. Typical lack of maintenance!”

“Wolves! Big ones!” she shrieked. “Open it, or I’m dead!”

[ Detected: Seraphina. Status: Critical. Intel potential: High. ]

“Hang on!” Adrian braced his boots against the concrete base. “I need more leverage. Where’s a—there!” He grabbed a loose iron pipe and jammed it into the gear assembly. “Physics, don't fail me now!”

With a screech of dying metal, the gate groaned open just a crack—maybe two feet. A woman in tattered, blood-stained clothes dived through, rolling across the dirt.

“Are you okay?” Adrian asked, his architect's mind already looking past her at the looming shadows in the dust.

“Close it!” Seraphina gasped, her chest heaving. “Close it before they—”

A low growl cut her off. Three massive, grey-furred wolves with glowing orange eyes skidded to a halt at the opening. Their skin looked like it had been stretched too thin over mutated muscle.

“Whoa,” Adrian breathed. “Those are... definitely not standard breeds.”

[ Alert: Mutant Wolves (Lvl 3). Aggression: Maximum. ]

“Don’t just stand there!” Seraphina scrambled back, clutching her side. “They’ll tear the gate down!”

“No, they won't,” Adrian said, his panic suddenly replaced by a strange, cold clarity. He looked at the gate’s mechanism. “The hinges are offset. If they try to push through, they’re basically entering a manual trash compactor.”

“What are you talking about?” she hissed.

“Get back,” Adrian commanded. He held the lever, watching the first wolf stick its head through the narrow gap. The beast snapped its jaws, strings of black saliva flying.

“Now!” Adrian didn’t pull the lever back—he pushed it forward into a secondary, broken slot.

The gate didn't just close; it surged forward, driven by a kinetic coil that had been under tension for years.

CRUNCH.

The lead wolf didn't even have time to yelp. The weight of the iron crushed its skull instantly. The other two wolves barked in fury, trying to squeeze through the remaining space to reach their fallen pack-mate.

“Again!” Adrian grunted, jumping on the lever with his full body weight.

The gate shuddered. It ground into the second wolf’s ribs with a sickening crackle of bone. The third wolf, seeing the fate of its brothers, retreated back into the grey fog with a mournful howl.

“You... you killed them with a door?” Seraphina looked at him like he was insane.

“It’s not just a door,” Adrian panted, wiping sweat from his forehead. “It’s a three-ton hydraulic-assisted entrance system. Or it was, before I snapped the pivot pin.”

Seraphina stared at the mangled corpses. “You saved my life. I have information about the siege... things you need to know.”

“Good,” Adrian said, turning back to the hologram that had just turned an angry shade of amber. “Because I have a feeling I’m in trouble.”

[ System Update: Seraphina saved. ]

[ Alert: Settlement Heat Score has increased (+50). ]

[ Mini-Event Triggered: Blood in the Water. ]

“Heat score?” Adrian looked at Seraphina. “What does that mean?”

Seraphina looked at the horizon, her face pale. “It means they know you're here. And they know you're not an easy meal.”

“Wait,” Adrian said as a distant, massive boom echoed through the ground. “What was that?”

[ Warning: High-level anomaly detected. Approaching in 60 seconds. ]

“You've got to be kidding me,” Adrian groaned. “I haven't even had breakfast yet!”
