Eric pulled away, because he wanted to be loyal to Lisa, no matter what.

“Excuse me, I have to go, thanks for the coffee,” Eric said,

Nora sighed as Eric stood up and to take his leave.

“Eric?” She called.

Eric turned. “Yes?”

“Be safe,” Nora blunted.

Eric nodded and he walked out of the store, the door rings the top bell, and it rang again, as another man walked in.

Nora exhaled, as she felt that desire for love but Eric heart was somewhere, even though, it wasn’t appreciated.

“I will give him time,” Nora muttered.

Nora glanced on the table and she saw that Eric forgot the necklace, the gift he bought for Lisa.

Nora quickly looked outside if she could see him but he was lost in the night.

Nora knew that he had to give him when next they met but she was curious.

Nora sat where Eric sat she opened the wrapper and took a glance at the necklace.

“Wow,” Nora muttered.

The necklace had a silver pendant, saying the word MY LOVE.

“This is wonderful,” Nora said, adoring the necklace.

Nora looked around and no one was looking and then she tried it on.

Nora felt like a queen putting the necklace on , even it was obviously cheap.

Nora quickly brought out her dress phone, and took several photos with the necklace, posing different styles.

Nora was happy.

“I will update my social media profile later,” Nora said jokingly.

“Nora!” A voice called.

Nora snapped, returning her phone to her pocket, but forgot to take off the necklace.

“Come on! Break is over, and I am not paying you stand around,” the manager said.

“Sorry, I am coming,” Nora replied.

Nora disposed the wrapper and went back to work leaving the necklace on her neck.

Eric, on the other hand got to Lisa house.

Eric stood outside the house, staring at the front door. His hands were trembling slightly, not from the cold but from the emotions surging through him. His chest felt tight, and his mind was still reeling from the conversation he’d just had with Nora. Part of him wanted to turn back, to go to her and talk things out, but another part knew that he couldn’t leave things unresolved with Lisa.

He had to confront her. He had to know the truth.

With a deep breath, Eric pushed open the door and stepped inside. The party was almost over, but he could still hear the faint sounds of laughter and chatter coming from the living room. A few guests lingered, their voices light and carefree as they gathered their things to leave. He stood in the entryway, feeling like a stranger in his own life. The air smelled of alcohol and perfume, and the soft glow of the party lights only made the scene feel more surreal.

“Hey, look who finally showed up!” one of Lisa’s friends, a tall blonde with a sneer on her lips, called out as she spotted Eric.

“Late to your own girlfriend’s party, huh?” She sneered.

Though Eric thought that no one noticed him the first but some people did, and they definitely spoke about him when left.

The other girls standing near her snickered, casting him mocking glances. Eric clenched his jaw, refusing to take the bait. He wasn’t in the mood for their games. He just wanted to find Lisa, talk to her, and figure out what was going on.

As he moved further into the house, he finally saw her Lisa, standing near the couch, laughing as she said goodbye to some of her guests. She looked radiant, her makeup perfect, her hair styled elegantly. But there was something about the way she carried herself tonight that felt off to him. She was carefree, almost too carefree, as if nothing in the world could touch her.

Oliver was standing beside her, his arm casually draped around her shoulders as they exchanged a few last words with their friends. Eric’s eyes narrowed as he looked at the man beside his girlfriend. Oliver had a smug grin on his face, and even from a distance, Eric could tell he was wealthy. His clothes were expensive, and there was an arrogance about him that set Eric on edge.

Eric was boiling but he refused to believe the obvious.

Oliver caught Eric’s gaze, and for a moment, they locked eyes. Then, as if to taunt him, Oliver gave him a slow, condescending smile.

“Hey,” Oliver said, stepping forward.

Oliver continued “You must be Eric, lisa told me about you when you left earlier.”

His voice dripped with disdain. “I’ve heard a lot about you.”

Eric’s fists tightened at his sides, but he forced himself to stay calm. “Yeah? Well, I don’t know anything about you.”

“Clearly,” Oliver chuckled, his eyes cold and mocking. He gave Lisa a little squeeze before turning back to Eric.

“But don’t worry, you’ll learn soon enough.” Oliver said.

Oliver gave Lisa a hug, and gave Eric, a little push with his shoulder, and scoffed.

“Great party, I hope we could do this more often!” Oliver shouted.

With that, Oliver turned and strolled out of the house, leaving Eric standing there, the weight of his words hanging in the air.

The front door clicked shut behind him, and the house seemed quieter now, almost painfully so. Eric’s heart pounded in his chest, and he felt an overwhelming urge to chase after him, but he knew his fight wasn’t with Oliver. Not yet.

He turned to Lisa, who was now avoiding his gaze, fidgeting with the hem of her dress.

“What the hell was that?! And why did you text me?!” Eric asked, his voice low but edged with anger.

Lisa sighed, finally meeting his eyes. “Eric, can we not do this right now? The party just ended. I’m tired. And I wanted you clean up, this party mess,”

“No,” Eric snapped, his frustration boiling over.

“We’re doing this now. Who is that guy?! Why is he acting like I don’t even matter?” Eric asked.

Lisa crossed her arms, her expression hardening. “His name is Oliver, and he’s my friend from university. He threw the party for me because I didn’t think you would.”

The words stung like a slap to the face. “I didn’t even know you were having a party!” Eric’s voice rose in disbelief.

Eric continued “You didn’t tell me! I would have done something if I knew.”

Lisa rolled her eyes. “Oh, please. Don’t pretend like you could’ve thrown anything half as nice as this. You work a minimum-wage job, Eric. What were you going to do? Buy me a cupcake from the bakery down the street?” She glanced, her lip curling in disdain.

“I bought you a gift,” Eric said, he tries to bring it out from his pocket.

“And what’s that? Is that supposed to be my birthday present? And where is it?” Lisa asked.

Eric struggled finding it.

“Hold on….. I had it on me,” eric said.

Lisa rolled her eyes.

“Oh shut! I must have forgotten it, at the store,” eric realized.

Lisa shook her head in disappointment. “Wow! So this was the kind of disappointment, I was supposed to face? Gosh! Eric! Do you want to humiliate me?!”

“I swear, I had a gift, but I must have forgotten it,” Eric pleaded.

“I am disappointed, Eric. So what was the gift?” Lisa asked.

“It…..it was a necklace, it had a pendant that says MY LOVE,” Eric said.

Lisa scoffed. “Thank God, it went missing, because I can’t wear such a thing,”.

“What?” Eric blunted.

Lisa scoffed, her eyes with clear disdain. “You shouldn’t have bothered.”

Eric felt something inside him break. He had come here hoping for an explanation, maybe even an apology, but this? This was worse than anything he could’ve imagined.

“Lisa,” he began, his voice trembling with hurt,

“are you serious? I’ve been by your side for years. I’ve done everything I could to make you happy, and now you’re treating me like... like I’m nothing.”

She didn’t flinch, her gaze cold. “Because you are nothing, Eric. Let’s stop pretending. This was never going to work. You’re poor. You’ve always been poor. And I can’t be with someone who has nothing to offer me, but it can work if you put more effort, I love you Eric, and you are the only one , and you know that,”.

Eric recoiled, the weight of her words crushing him. “You... You don’t mean that,” he whispered, shaking his head in disbelief. “You can’t mean that.”

“Oh, I mean it,” she said.

She continued “You’re a charity case, Eric,”

Eric seemed confused, if he should get angry or not.

“I dated you out of love, not pity. You’re making feel as if I don’t appreciate you, I no things can be tough but I am too beautiful for suffering okay? You are my love and that’s all you ever were.” Lisa slow calm voice, warmth and manipulative.

Eric doesn’t know if she is lying or not.

Eric’s chest tightened, the air feeling thick and suffocating. He stared at her, struggling to comprehend what she was saying. He had given her everything he had his time, his effort, his heart.

“And now?” he asked, his voice hollow. “What about now?”

Lisa smiled, a cruel, bitter smile. “Now, I want my love, to help me clean up, I have somewhere to be.”

Eric felt like the ground was slipping out from under him. “Somewhere? I thought you were tired?”

Lisa shrugged, her expression indifferent. “Yes, I was, but now I am not, so going clean up, besides it is a party,”

“A party?” Eric asked.

“He’s throwing an after-party tonight,” she added, her tone light, as if discussing the weather. “At the bar down the street. I’m heading there after I finish freshening up, as you can’t do that for me,”

Eric felt the blood drain from his face. He wanted to scream, to rage, to tell her she was making the biggest mistake of her life.

But all he could manage was a quiet, desperate, “How could you do this?” Eric muttered.

Lisa rolled her eyes. “Oh, don’t be so dramatic, Eric. It is just a night, you are overthinking things, just rest, you need your strength, for your job tomorrow.”

Eric sighed, he tries to hug her but she shifted.

He had known something was wrong between them for a while, but he never expected this.

“Was it all a lie?” he asked, himself. His voice barely above a whisper.

Lisa walked out of his presence, she stumbled into the bathroom and showered, living her phone behind.

Eric just swept, trying to overlook. “Maybe I am over thinking,” he said to himself.

As Eric sweeps the floor, he saw that Lisa phone had a text, but he didn’t care, but he curiously was pricked.

Eric moved closer to the phone, and he peeped and it was from Oliver.

Eric dropped the broom immediately.

Eric read to text and it says HEY LOVE WHEN ARE YOU COMING? OR IS YOUR BROKE BOYFRIEND HOLDING YOU BACK?

Eric was furious.

“Eric did he get a text?” Lisa asked with a loud voice from the bathroom.

“Yes,” Eric replied.

“I hope you didn’t read it?” Lisa asked.

Eric bit his lips in greif. “No, sweetheart,” he replied.

“Thanks love. Can you get a towel?” Lisa requested.

“Sure,” Eric replied.

Eric read the text again and he was bittered.

So the broke boyfriend decided to attend the party, himself.

“Eric?” Lisa called but no response.

Without another word, Eric turned and walked out the door, his mind numb, his heart shattered. He didn’t know where he was going, but his feet carried him toward the bar, the anger building inside him with every step.

He had to see Oliver again. He had to confront him, face to face.

The night air was cool as Eric made his way down the street, his mind racing. All the years he had spent loving Lisa, all the sacrifices he had made for her, were crashing down around him. But beneath the heartbreak, beneath the pain, there was a new emotion rising to the surface.

Rage.

By the time he reached the bar, the neon lights flickering above him, Eric’s hands were clenched into fists. He pushed open the door, his heart pounding as he stepped inside, scanning the crowd for any sign of Oliver.

This wasn’t over. Not by a long shot.

The night air was charged with an unnormal stillness, one felt only after there had been too much laughter to bounce off a room. Inside the Rodriguez mansion, the walls pulsed with golden light, the scents of champagne and foreign candles hanging in the air late into the night after the guests had left.
