The bar was loud, the thumping bass of the music vibrating through Eric’s chest as he walked inside. It was packed, filled with people dancing, laughing, and shouting over the music. For a moment, he felt out of place, a bitter reminder of how far removed he was from this world, the world that Lisa now seemed to belong to.

Eric’s eyes scanned the crowd, his jaw clenched tight as he searched for Oliver. The anger that had been bubbling inside him ever since Lisa’s manipulative words was now boiling over. He didn’t care about the stares from strangers or the fact that he didn’t belong here. He only cared about confronting Oliver and getting answers.

Finally, in the back corner, Eric saw him. Oliver was seated at a large booth, surrounded by a group of people, boys and girls alike, laughing and drinking as if they didn’t have a care in the world. A few girls were dancing around the table, and Oliver, with a cocky smirk plastered on his face, sat back like he owned the place.

For a moment, Eric stood there, frozen. This was the guy Lisa comparing him to? He was obviously a rich kid who used his money to throw parties and buy people’s attention? Like Lisa.

But then, the anger surged again, propelling Eric forward. He weaved through the crowd, ignoring the people bumping into him or giving him strange looks. His gaze was locked on Oliver, and nothing else mattered.

“Oliver!” Eric called out, his voice barely cutting through the noise of the music.

Oliver didn’t even look up. He was too busy laughing at something one of the girls had said.

“Over here!” Eric shouted.

Eric’s jaw tightened, and without thinking, he pushed his way to the table and tapped Oliver on the shoulder hard.

Oliver turned, a look of shock crossing his face as he saw Eric standing there. For a split second, their eyes locked, and Oliver’s surprise quickly shifted into amusement.

“Well, well, well,” Oliver said, his voice dripping with sarcasm. He leaned back in his seat, smirking. “Look who it is. The poor boy, Eric.”

The people around the table, sensing the tension, turned to look at Eric. Some of them laughed under their breath, whispering to each other. One of the girls leaned over and whispered something into Oliver’s ear, causing him to chuckle even more.

“Do you need something to eat?” Oliver asked. Everyone laughed.

Eric’s fists clenched at his sides, his heart pounding in his chest. He could feel the rage building, but he forced himself to stay calm at least for now.

“Is this funny to you?” Eric said, his voice low but filled with barely controlled anger. “Is taking someone’s girlfriend funny to you?”

Oliver’s smirk widened, and he shrugged casually. “Well, I took nothing, I only fulfilled her wishes, you should be grateful, and when the girlfriend’s as easy as Lisa, it’s hard not to laugh, but I did nothing”

The words hit Eric like a punch to the gut, but he didn’t flinch. His gaze remained locked on Oliver, his anger rising with every passing second.

“So, is it true? And why are you doing this? Huh? Why?” Eric said through gritted teeth.

Eric continued “You threw the party for her, and now you think you can just take her, making me feel less”

Oliver chuckled, leaning forward with his elbows on the table. “I didn’t take her, not yet by the way. I can take her if I want because she wanted it. She’s been hanging around me for weeks, practically throwing herself at me. And let’s face it, Eric, you couldn’t give her what she wanted. Money, parties, excitement. You’re just some poor guy working in a garden, as she told me, I don’t care who you work for.”

The group around the table laughed at Oliver’s words, and Eric felt his blood boil. He took a step closer to Oliver, his fists clenched so tightly his knuckles turned white.

“Broke boy!” Oliver muttered.

“Say that again,” Eric growled, his voice shaking with rage.

Oliver grinned, clearly enjoying this. “I said you’re nothing, Eric. You never were. Lisa was only with you because she felt sorry for you.”

“No! She loves me! You are trying to change her mind!” Eric rebuked.

Something inside Eric snapped. Without thinking, he lunged forward, grabbing Oliver by the collar and yanking him out of his seat. The table shook, and drinks spilled as Oliver stumbled, his smug expression faltering for the first time.

“Whoa, hey!” Oliver shouted, trying to push Eric away, but Eric was already on him, his anger giving him strength.

That caught the attention of everyone, the disc joker had to stop the music, to know what is going on.

The music stopped, and people turned to watch the scene unfold. Eric’s fist connected with Oliver’s jaw, and the sound of the impact echoed in the now-silent bar. Oliver stumbled back, clutching his face, his eyes wide with shock.

“What is wrong with you?!” Oliver asked clenching his jaw.

“Eric, what the hell?!” one of the girls screamed, but Eric didn’t hear her. All he saw was Oliver, the guy who had humiliated him, who had taken everything from him.

Eric swung again, but this time Oliver dodged, and before Eric could land another punch, two of Oliver’s friends jumped in, grabbing Eric and pulling him back.

“You’re gonna regret this, man,” one of them snarled as they held Eric’s arms behind his back.

Oliver, recovering from the punch, wiped the blood from his lip and glared at Eric. “You think you can just walk in here and start a fight? You don’t belong here, Eric.”

With a nod from Oliver, his friends threw Eric to the ground. He hit the floor hard, pain shooting through his body, but he refused to give them the satisfaction of hearing him groan.

Oliver’s friends kicked him, and Eric felt the air leave his lungs as one of them landed a brutal kick to his ribs. He curled up, trying to protect himself, but they kept coming, each kick harder than the last.

“Stop it!” someone shouted from the crowd, but the guys ignored it, beating Eric until he could barely breathe.

As the beating continued, Eric caught a glimpse of Lisa in the crowd. She was standing near the back, her arms crossed, her face expressionless. She wasn’t even trying to stop them. She wasn’t doing anything.

“Lisa?” Eric called.

Then, just as quickly as it had started, it was over. Oliver and his friends backed off, and Eric was left lying on the floor, bruised and broken.

They laughed, stepping over him as they left the bar, Oliver leading the way with that same smug grin on his face.

Eric struggled to his feet, his body aching with every movement. His vision was blurred, his face swollen and bruised, but he forced himself to stand. He didn’t know what hurt more about his body or the fact that Lisa hadn’t lifted a finger to help him.

With one last look at the bar, Eric stumbled out into the cold night air. He didn’t know where he was going, but he had to get away. He wandered aimlessly for a while until he found another bar, one much quieter, far away from where anyone knew him. He ordered a drink, sinking into a booth at the back of the room, and let the alcohol numb the pain.

The following morning, Eric was back at work, trimming the roses in the Rodriguez garden. His body ached with every movement, but he ignored it, focusing on the task at hand. He needed to distract himself from everything that had happened the night before. The betrayal, the beating, the humiliation, it was all too much to process.

But she still doesn’t not blamed Lisa for anything, he saw it as a mere, misunderstanding.

As he worked, Mrs. Rodriguez approached him, her expression cold as always.

“Eric,” she said sharply,

“What have you done to those roses? You’ve been trimming them all wrong. Do you even know what you’re doing?” She asked.

Eric didn’t answer. He didn’t have the energy to argue. He just kept working, his eyes downcast.

Mrs. Rodriguez huffed in annoyance. “Stop what you’re doing,” she ordered. “I want to show my son the roses.”

Eric froze, his heart skipping a beat. Her son? He’d never met Mrs. Rodriguez’s son before. In all the time he’d worked for her, the man had never come around.

Slowly, Eric stood up and turned to face her. As he did, his eyes met another pair of dark, bruised eyes that mirrored his own.

It was Oliver…..

  • Chais of Silence.

The night air was charged with an unnormal stillness, one felt only after there had been too much laughter to bounce off a room. Inside the Rodriguez mansion, the walls pulsed with golden light, the scents of champagne and foreign candles hanging in the air late into the night after the guests had left. Lisa stood barefoot in front of the large window, wrapped in a white satin robe that reflected in the moonlight. The city lights painted her figure in soft gold as she stared out silently into the night.Behind her, the bathroom door creaked open. Steam curled into the room as Oliver stepped out, water still dripping from his toned frame. The walls were tired, and the tiles alongside the entrance bore footprints of countless renters who had entered and exited the aged complex. There were some kids playing soccer across the road, their cries a muffled accompaniment to the commotion in Eric's heart."This is it," Eric said almost with a sigh, halting at the gate.Nora nodded.
