The Homecoming Detour
Chapter 1: The Homecoming Detour
The cargo freighter Iron Lung groaned as it pressed against the rotting pilings of the pier, a sound like a giant’s stomach growling after a week of fasting. Tristan stepped onto the salt-crusted wood, adjusting the collar of his coat to hide his face. He just wanted a coffee, a place to sleep, and to disappear into the gray sprawl of the city. Thwip. The sound wasn't a gunshot; it was the wet, ugly noise of a high-caliber round tearing through a crate of imported fish right next to his head. "Oh, for the love of—" Tristan dropped, sliding into the shadow of a rusted shipping container as wood splinters showered his hair. "Hey! Watch it, you idiot!" a man screamed from across the dock. "He’s behind the crates! Light him up!" another voice roared. Tristan pressed his back against the cold steel, blinking as the air filled with the chaotic staccato of automatic gunfire. He wasn't the target. He was just a guy with a bad sense of timing. "Are you serious right now?" Tristan muttered to himself, peeking around the corner. A group of men in matching neon-yellow windbreakers—the local gang, presumably—were pinned down by a sniper positioned high on the port authority tower. Between them and the gunmen sat a vendor, frozen in terror behind a cart of unsold street corn. "Get down, man!" Tristan shouted over the din of lead hitting metal. The vendor looked over, eyes wide. "My corn! I’m gonna lose my deposit!" "Forget the corn! Move!" "Who the hell are you?" the vendor yelled back. "Just a guy who hates being shot at before breakfast!" Tristan sighed. He’d spent years training to stay invisible, but his instinct to keep people from dying was a persistent, annoying itch. He scanned the area. Three shooters. Two near the pier stairs, one covering the flank. He moved like smoke, shifting between cover with a grace that defied his bulky coat. He surged forward, grabbing a discarded metal crate lid as a makeshift shield. "Hey! You! You’re dead!" one of the yellow-clad gangsters shouted, turning his SMG toward Tristan. "Not today, chief," Tristan grunted. He tossed the lid, clattering it against the side of a forklift. As the goon pivoted to track the sound, Tristan was already there. He didn't use a blade or a gun; he used a precise strike to the carotid, dropping the man into a heap of peaceful unconsciousness. "One down," Tristan breathed, feeling the familiar rush of adrenaline. "He took out Benny! Get him!" Tristan vaulted over a stack of pallets, landing in a crouch behind the second gunman. He delivered a swift kick to the man's knee, followed by a double-tap to the temple. The guy crumpled, his weapon clattering harmlessly away. "You're making this very difficult for my travel plans," Tristan complained, ducking as a bullet whistled through the space his head had occupied a second ago. He sprinted toward the stairs. The third gunman was distracted, focused entirely on the chaos below. Tristan vaulted the railing, landing silently behind him. A quick grab, a twist, and the rifle was dismantled in his hands. "Sorry, friend. Nap time." Tristan tapped the guy’s chin with a gloved fist. He collapsed like a puppet with cut strings. "That was... remarkably fast," a voice chimed from above. Tristan froze. The voice was melodic, amused, and utterly out of place. He looked up toward the rooftop of the warehouse. Silhouetted against the morning sun stood a woman. Even from thirty feet away, he could see the smirk on her face. She looked like she belonged in a gala, not a gang war. "You the one who started this?" Tristan called up, wiping dust from his coat. "I’m the one who curated it," she laughed. She reached into her pocket, pulled out a small, metallic sphere, and tossed it into the air. "The ending, however, needs more flair." "Wait, don't—" Flash. A blinding white light erupted, washing out the world. Tristan threw an arm over his eyes, his military-grade reflexes keeping him upright even as his vision burned. The world went silent, then slowly, the spots in his vision faded to gray. When he finally looked up, the gangsters were stumbling around like drunken sailors, clawing at their eyes. The pier was a mess of groans and confusion. The woman was gone, but a shadow flickered at the edge of his vision. He turned, his heart hammering—not from the fight, but from the sudden, jarring feeling of being seen. Not just seen, but known. She dropped down from the roof with the grace of a falling leaf, landing ten feet away. She didn't look like a threat; she looked like a riddle he wasn't sure he wanted to solve. "You're slow for a guy who hits that hard," she teased, stepping closer. Tristan didn't move. His pulse spiked—a dangerous, fluttering sensation that had nothing to do with combat. "I’m not looking for trouble. I’m just passing through." "Passing through," she echoed, tilting her head. Her eyes were bright, dancing with a kind of chaotic mischief that made his stomach do a slow, dizzying flip. "A man like you doesn't 'pass through' this city, Tristan." He stiffened. "Who told you that name?" She just giggled, a sound that felt like ice water on a hot day. She stepped into his personal space, smelling faintly of gunpowder and expensive jasmine. She dropped a slip of paper at his feet. "See you around, stranger," she whispered, backing away until she vanished into the shifting fog of the harbor. Tristan picked up the note. His fingers brushed the heavy cardstock. In elegant, flowing script, his full legal name was written across the center. He stared at it, the paper trembling slightly in his hand. He had arrived to be a ghost, but he had just met the one person who seemed to have his obituary already written. "Great," he muttered to the empty air, though he couldn't stop the corner of his mouth from twitching upward. "Just great."Expand

Shadows of the Vance Legacy The Point of No Return
The air in the hallway had curdled into a sickly, yellow-green fog. Tristan pulled his tactical scarf over his nose and mouth, his eyes stinging as the aerosolized nerve agent began to bite. Every breath was a gamble, but he didn't slow his pace. He vaulted over a fallen vending machine, his boots skidding on the slick floor, and slammed his shoulder into the door of the primary holding block."Victoria!" he barked, his voice muffled by the fabric."I’m still here, you big lug," came a strained, breathless reply from the darkness. "But I really hope you brought some breath mints or a miracle, because this gas smells like a gym bag that sat in the sun for a month."Tristan pushed through the heavy-duty door. The room was bathed in the harsh, strobing red of a containment alarm. Victoria was slumped against the reinforced wall, her hands cuffed to a vertical pipe. She looked pale, her hair matted with sweat, but the moment she saw him, her lips curved into that familiar, infuriatingly b

Shadows of the Vance Legacy Desperate Measures
The silence in the aftermath of the skirmish was absolute, save for the rhythmic, annoying drip of a leaking pipe somewhere in the shadows of the estate. Tristan pushed himself up from the marble floor, his vision swimming in a sea of jagged gray fractals. He tasted copper and failure."Pathetic," he rasped, his voice echoing against the cold stone. "You had one job, Ghost. Keep her safe. You managed the exact opposite."He wiped the blood from his brow, his hand shaking with a cold, hollow rage. The scent of jasmine was fading, replaced by the sterile, antiseptic smell of the facility. He didn't care about the ledger anymore. He didn't care about his father’s cryptic games or the grand design of the syndicate. There was only one variable left in the equation: Victoria. And she was gone.He pulled himself to his feet, leaning heavily against a marble column. He looked at his reflection in a darkened display case—a man who looked like he’d been dragged through a war zone."Okay, Trista

Shadows of the Vance Legacy Breaking the Code
The mahogany desk felt like a relic of a ghost, the photo burning a hole in Tristan’s palm. "He’s working with the man who took everything from me," Tristan muttered, his voice hollow. "All these years, I thought he was a martyr."Victoria gripped his forearm, her gaze darting to the shadows in the corners of the study. "Don't get sentimental, Ghost. Martyrs are just people who didn't have a good enough exit strategy. Right now, he’s just a target with a very nice collection of fountain pens.""You have no chill, you know that?" Tristan let out a jagged laugh, though his eyes remained fixed on the darkened doorway."Chill is for people who aren't currently trespassing in a high-security bunker," she retorted, nudging him toward the exit. "Let’s keep moving. I have a feeling the welcome mat is about to be retracted."They stepped back into the hallway, the marble floor cold beneath their boots. Tristan’s pulse was a frantic drumbeat in his ears. He looked at the walls, recognizing the

The crawlspace was a tomb of dust and rat droppings, but Tristan barely noticed. He was pinned against the metal plating, his breath coming in shallow, jagged hitches as the ghost of his father’s voice echoed in his skull."Dad?" he whispered, his finger still hovering over the comms button. "That’s... that’s impossible."Victoria shimmied back toward him, her elbows scraped and her hair a disaster of cobwebs and static-charged curls. She peered at him, her expression softening from tactical focus to something uncomfortably tender. "Tristan. Hey. Look at me.""He’s been dead for fifteen years, Vic. I buried him. I watched the casket go into the ground.""People like us," she said, tapping his chest with a dirt-smudged finger, "we don't get the luxury of clean burials. Did you see a body? Like, a real, 'I’m checking the pulse' body?"Tristan went quiet. He stared at the dark vent ahead, his jaw working. "No. It was a closed-casket service. Agency protocols. They said the blast… they sa
