For a second nobody moved. Then Jessica started laughing, and Diane joined in.
"Where did you pick that up, the trash?" Diane said, wiping her eyes. "Or did you steal it from somebody?"
"That's the supreme black card," Jessica said. "It's the highest card this bank has. The people who own those are some of the most powerful people in the world."
"If the real owner finds out you're walking around with it, they'll have you killed," Diane said. "And you're standing here waving it like a toy."
Ethan kept his voice flat. "I didn't steal it. It was given to me."
"Given to you." Diane shook her head. "By whom? Nobody gives away a card like that. You must have done something shady. A scam, a robbery, I don't know."
Jessica took a step back from him and looked at the people around them. "Mom, what if he drags us into it? We were just talking to him. Somebody could say we knew."
"That's right." Diane's face went tight. She pointed at Ethan like he had a disease. "Thank God Claire is done with you. I don't want one bit of your mess on this family."
She turned to the guards. "What are you waiting for? Take him. He's got a stolen card and he put his hands on me."
The younger guard, a big man named Gary, hesitated. Then he looked at the bronze card lying on the step, the one Diane had dropped. To him that was a customer who mattered, and Ethan was a guy in dirty boots.
"Ma'am, don't worry, I've got him," Gary said. He grabbed Ethan's wrist and twisted it behind his back. "Come on, buddy. Let's see what the police have to say about that card."
"Let go," Ethan said quietly.
"Or what?" Gary laughed. "You think you're some big shot because you found a card? Nice try."
Ethan didn't fight him. He just stood there, and for some reason that made Gary squeeze harder.
The glass doors behind them slid open.
A woman walked out, and the whole front of the bank seemed to change. She looked about thirty, tall, in a dark fitted dress and sharp heels, with long black hair that fell over one shoulder. She was beautiful in a way that made people look twice, and the way she walked made them step out of her path.
Her badge said Olivia Grant, Senior Director.
"What's all this noise?" she said. "You can hear it from the lobby."
"Ms. Grant, sorry about this," Gary said right away. "We caught a man using a fake black card. I'm taking him in."
Olivia's eyes moved to Ethan's hand, and they stopped.
She stood very still. The card was shining there in the sun, with its small silver mark in the corner.
She walked closer, slowly, and looked at it without touching it. Her face went pale.
There were only nine of those cards in the whole world. She had seen every one of them, and she knew who held each one. But this one she had never seen in person in three years, not since its owner disappeared.
Her eyes went up to Ethan's face, and her lips parted.
Then she turned and swung her hand hard across Gary's cheek.
The sound cracked across the steps. Gary's head snapped to the side, and he let go of Ethan's wrist.
"Take your hands off him!" Olivia said. Her voice was sharp and shaking. "Do you know who you just grabbed? Do you have any idea?"
Gary held his face. "Ms. Grant, I thought..."
"You thought." She cut him off. "You put your hands on a holder of this card, in front of my bank, in front of all these people. You're fired. Give me your badge and get off this property right now."
Gary's face went white. "Ms. Grant, please, I was only doing my job..."
"Your badge," she said again, very quietly this time. That was worse than yelling.
His hand shook as he unclipped it and gave it to her. The other guard stared at the ground and didn't say a word.
Diane was staring too, but not for long. She pushed forward and grabbed Olivia's arm.
"Wait, wait, you can't do that. He's right. That man is a nobody. He's a car wash worker who just got divorced from my daughter. He can't be the owner of that card."
"He's a thief," Jessica added. "Please, just call the police and have him arrested before he does something worse."
Olivia looked down at Diane's hand on her sleeve until Diane let go.
She knew something these two didn't. A person who owned a supreme black card didn't lose it. They didn't drop it in the street for an ordinary man to find, because the bank guarded those accounts closer than anything. If this man had it in his hand, then the card had been given to him on purpose, and that meant he was someone very important.
Someone she had waited three years to see.
"I don't know who you think you are," Olivia said, her voice cold as ice. "But you've insulted a guest of this bank on its own steps, accused him of a crime with no proof, and caused a scene in front of my customers."
"But he..." Diane started.
"I'm not finished." Olivia took one step toward her. "As of right now, both of your membership cards are being taken back. Your accounts are being reviewed, and your right to do business at any Sterling Crown branch is cancelled for good."
Diane's mouth opened, but nothing came out.
"Mom," Jessica whispered. "She can't do that. Can she?"
Olivia didn't even look at her. She had already turned to Ethan, and her whole face had softened.

Chapter 8
Preston stared at Ethan for a long moment. Then a slow smile spread over his face, and he leaned back in his chair.Fifteen million. It was a big number, and a man like Ethan could never say it with his own money. Somebody was backing him, and Preston didn't need to guess who. Olivia was sitting right next to him, sipping her wine like she had nothing to do with it.But Preston knew something that Ethan didn't. Harold Mercer ran his auctions by a strict rule, and everyone in the upper circle of the city knew it. The person who bid and the person who paid had to be the same. Nobody could pay for someone else, and no one could send a friend or a bank to cover the bill.Ethan couldn't know that. If he did, he wouldn't be sitting there so calm. He thought Olivia would simply write a check for him, and he was about to find out that she couldn't.Preston picked up his paddle. He wanted to teach this man a lesson he would never forget."Fifteen million and five hundred thousand," he called o

Preston's face turned dark. He had been pleased with himself a minute ago, and now his jaw was so tight that a muscle jumped in his cheek. He was sure Ethan was doing it on purpose. A car wash worker walks into a room like this, and he has the nerve to say that ring is his, right in front of everyone. Preston's hand curled around his glass until his knuckles went pale."Fine," he said, and forced a laugh. "Let's see how he plans to get it. I'd love to watch."Around them, the guests were already whispering and grinning. Nobody in the room believed Ethan for a second. They figured he was a poor man trying to look big in front of a famous woman, and they were ready to enjoy the show when he fell on his face.Harold Mercer walked up to the stage, tapped the microphone, and welcomed everyone. People took their seats. Waiters moved between the tables, and the auction began. The first item was an oil painting of a harbor. It sold for two hundred thousand dollars. The second was a gold pocke
Chapter 6
Claire heard it from the people standing near the door. Two women whispered it behind their glasses, and then a man said it out loud to his friend, as if he couldn't believe it either. That was Olivia Grant, the senior director of Sterling Crown Bank.Claire felt something heavy settle in her chest. She had asked for the divorce only a few hours ago, and already Ethan was walking in with a woman everyone in the room knew by name. She told herself it didn't matter, but she couldn't shake the feeling. She looked at Olivia's back, then at the way Ethan walked beside her, calm and easy, like he'd been going to dinners like this his whole life. That wasn't how she remembered him at all.The ballroom was huge. Crystal lights hung from the ceiling, round tables were set with white cloths and gold plates, and a small band was playing near the stage. At the far end stood a long table with a velvet cloth over it, where the auction items would be shown later. The moment Preston stepped inside, p
Chapter 5
The Harbor Palace Hotel had a red carpet rolled out across the front steps. Cars were lined up along the curb, and men in tuxedos and women in long dresses were walking in two and three at a time.Ethan's car stopped at the end of the line. Olivia was on the phone in the back seat, talking low and fast with one finger raised to tell him she'd be a minute. He nodded and got out first. The suit she had found for him fit well. It was black, simple, and cut like it was made for him, and for the first time in three years he didn't smell like soap and car wax. He tugged at the sleeve and started up the carpet."Ethan?"He knew the voice before he turned. Claire was standing near the door in a dark blue evening dress, with her hair pinned up and a small silver bag in her hand. Preston was next to her in a tuxedo, one hand resting at her back. Her eyes went wide. "What are you doing here?""I came for the dinner," Ethan said."You came for the dinner?" She looked him up and down, from the sui

Diane and Jessica stood frozen on the steps. They knew who Olivia Grant was, and they knew she meant every word.Diane opened her mouth to argue, then shut it again. Jessica tugged at her sleeve, and the two of them walked off down the sidewalk without looking back. People were still filming, and Jessica kept her face turned away."Mom, that's it for us at this bank," Jessica said once they were far enough. "All because of him.""Don't worry," Diane said through her teeth. "That card is fake, I'd bet my life on it. Once the staff checks it, they'll find out and the police will come. He'll get a lot worse than we did."She took out her phone and called Claire. She didn't wait for a hello."Claire, your husband just hit me. I'm at the bank, I fell down the steps, and my hip is killing me." Her voice was shaking, and it sounded real. "And that's not even the worst of it. He's mixed up with some gang of thieves. He showed up here with a fake black card trying to cheat the bank out of mone
