Meanwhile, the Arthur Caldwell residence had never felt like a home.

Too big for the few who lived there, too cold to be called comfortable, and tonight, too quiet for a room holding more than a dozen people at once.

They sat and stood around the spacious main hall, not a trace of warmth on any of their faces. More than a dozen people from the other branches of the Caldwell family, all gathered for the same purpose, a purpose that had long since stopped needing to be said out loud.

The only sound came from the chandelier above their heads, a faint hum that felt far too loud in the middle of that silence.

Arthur was the one who broke it.

"Those ten hitmen..." His voice was low, measured, but something was boiling underneath it. "Ten hitmen I paid a fortune for, that I trusted to finish one simple job. And what did we get?" He looked around the room, one face at a time. "Caden's dead, sure, but Sera's still breathing. Which means all that money went straight down the drain."

Megan stood across the table, her hands balled into fists on the wooden surface.

"We spent forty-two days putting this plan together." Her voice was sharper, more controlled, but she couldn't completely hide her frustration. "Forty-two days. We confirmed the location, the camera blind spots, the patrol schedules, the route she takes every night. Everything was calculated down to the last minute. And even with all that, they still failed. Are they really the great hitmen everyone's been whispering about?! We were willing to hand over six percent of the Caldwell fortune just to get access to them, and for what?! They're useless!"

Silence.

Gerard, Megan's husband, shifted in his seat. Of everyone in the room, he was always the coldest, the one who never wasted energy on anger.

"Crying over the failure won't change anything." His voice was flat, like he was reading a report. "The mission failed, and we can't turn back time. What we need to talk about now is the next step, not who to blame."

A few people shifted uncomfortably. Not because they were offended, but because Gerard was right, and right in a way nobody enjoyed.

Layla, who had been standing in the corner with her arms crossed the whole time, finally spoke.

"The next step can't start until we deal with one major problem." Her gaze drifted to Daniel, still slumped in a chair by the wall, head tilted back, not fully recovered from the light hit that had knocked him out earlier. Then her eyes returned to the room. "That man. The one standing next to Sera tonight."

No one responded right away.

"He's strong," Layla went on, her voice quieter now, more careful. "Way too strong for someone who looks like that. One hit, and Daniel was out cold." Her eyes swept the room. "If he stays by Sera's side, he's going to be a problem."

A longer silence this time.

Lara was the one who broke it, her voice lighter than it should have been for a topic like this.

"Should we ask them for help again?"

The word "them" dropped into the room like a stone into water. The ripples made no sound, but everyone felt them. Every head turned to Lara, then shifted in the same direction.

Arthur.

"No," Arthur said firmly. "We don't rely on them any more than we have to. They're not allies, they're creditors. Every favor we ask for comes with a price we'll have to pay later. And when Sera's finally dead and the Caldwell fortune lands in our hands, I don't want to find out we have to hand half of it over to them as compensation for their contribution."

The room nodded, one by one, silent but in sync.

Because that was the whole point. The Caldwell fortune was the goal. The less they had to split it, the better. And relying on outsiders meant opening a door that would be very hard to close again.

"Then we've only got one option." Angela stepped forward, her voice measured and direct. "And didn't we already prepare this plan from the start, as a backup in case the hit on Sera failed?"

A few people exchanged glances.

Lara was the one who said the name.

"Tristan Kane."

The name rolled off her lips easily, like a card she'd been holding for a long time, just waiting to be laid on the table.

Angela continued, her tone unchanged.

"Sera's ex-boyfriend from high school. The Kane family carries a lot of weight in Brighton, and more importantly, Tristan has already said he's willing to work with us to kill Sera and take the Caldwell fortune."

Arthur nodded. His eyes moved to Daniel once more, to his son's still-pale face in that chair, and his jaw tightened.

"Call Tristan first thing tomorrow morning. Have him come to the Caldwell estate to propose to Sera. Not as some ordinary guest. He needs to come fully prepared, like someone who's been planning this proposal for a long time. Make it look sincere, well thought out, not last-minute." He paused. "And send one of our people to keep an eye on the proposal from the inside. I want a firsthand report, not secondhand gossip."

A few people took notes. A few nodded.

Then Arthur shifted his gaze to Daniel once more.

His hand clenched into a fist.

Slowly, but visibly.

"And one last thing." His voice dropped an octave, into something that felt more dangerous than shouting. "Tell Tristan to bring enough bodyguards. I don't want that bastard causing a mess." His eyes didn't leave his son's face. "He'll be there. And I don't want a single one of us coming home looking like my son."

The room was silent for a few seconds.

Then, one by one, the heads in the room nodded.

Plan B was ready to roll.

"Sera."Tristan turned his head without lowering his raised hand. His voice went soft again, like someone coaxing a child away from a fire."Step back. This is the guy who wants to marry you, right?" His smile was thin. "Then please, don't get involved just yet. Let him prove he's worthy right here. If he really deserves to stand beside you, he'll make it through this."Sera opened her mouth. She wanted to say something. Maybe to refuse, maybe to warn him, but before a single word came out, her eyes met Lein's.He turned his head slightly toward her and smiled.A small, easy smile, like someone about to step out to grab some tea. His eyes said one thing very clearly: I'll be fine.Sera looked at him for a moment. Then nodded slowly. She stepped back a few paces, leaving plenty of space in the middle of the hall.Lein turned to face forward again. Ten huge men stood in a half circle in front of him, their shadows falling across the marble floor like a moving wall. He looked at them one

"You only see what's on the outside, Tristan."Sera's voice wasn't loud, but it was sharp enough to make the smile on Tristan's face slip a little."That's the only thing you ever see, and that's exactly why you'll never understand." Sera took a step to the side, standing shoulder to shoulder with Lein. "Lein is a good man. He promised to protect me. And I trust him."A moment of silence. Then Tristan laughed.Quietly at first, like someone trying to hold it in. But the longer it went on, the more it broke loose, until his shoulders were shaking and he had to press a palm to his chest to catch his breath."Protect you?" He wiped the corner of his eye with a fingertip. "*Him?*"His index finger rose, pointing at Lein without even looking."Sera, Sera, Sera. Listen to me." His tone softened again, full of fake patience. "I know the people from the other branches of the Caldwell family want your fortune. That's no secret. That's exactly why I'm here today, offering to protect you. The Ka

The front doors of the Caldwell estate were wide open. In the doorway stood a man whose presence seemed deliberately designed to fill the room. He was about 185 centimeters tall. His brown hair was slicked neatly back, not a single strand daring to stray out of place. Thin-framed glasses sat on his sharp nose, giving him a polished, intelligent look. The dark gray suit he wore wrapped his athletic build in a perfect cut, broad shoulders, slim waist, not a single wrinkle in sight. He was handsome. His smile was warm. His posture was upright and confident. In short, he looked like the kind of guy any mother would want to set her daughter up with. In his hands was a massive bouquet of white and pink roses, at least a hundred stems. Behind him stood five maids in matching, neatly pressed cream uniforms. Each one carried a velvet-wrapped gift box tied with a perfect gold ribbon. And behind those five, ten men in black suits stood in two rows. Shoulders as wide as doorways, necks as

"You don't need to cook anything," Sera said, throwing off her blanket. "Let's head downstairs. They've already made breakfast for us."Lein nodded. "Alright."They left the bedroom and went down the stairs to the ground floor. The corridors of the Caldwell estate were full of busy staff. Some were carrying laundry baskets, some were wiping down the stair railings, some were straightening vases in the corners of the hallway. All of them were working diligently. But not a single one of them greeted her.A young maid passed them at a corner. She just stepped aside, eyes fixed straight ahead, then went back to her work as if what had just walked by was nothing but a breeze. Two other maids near the living room door didn't even turn their heads. No respectful nods. No "good morning, Young Miss."Lein glanced at Sera. She walked with her back straight and her face blank, as if nothing about this was strange at all. She's not bothered, Lein thought. Or more accurately, she's too used to it

Sunlight poured in all at once. Wide and bright, it hit Sera square in the face without warning the moment the curtains were pulled aside. Sera scrunched her forehead, squeezing her eyes shut tighter before finally giving up and slowly opening them. It took a few seconds for her vision to adjust, for the shapes in the room to come into focus. The open window. Morning light slanting in. And Lein, standing there with his hand still on the curtain, looking at her with an expression that was not the least bit sorry. Sera let out a slow breath. Relief. Not because Lein was there, but because it meant everything that happened last night wasn't a dream. It was real. This man was real. And she wasn't alone anymore. But it also meant something else. Uncle Caden was really gone. Sera swallowed the feeling for a moment, let it linger, then tucked it away somewhere it wouldn't bother her until she was fully awake. "You were really out cold," Lein said, his tone light. "It's already six

Ten minutes later, the bathroom door opened.Sera turned from where she lay on the bed, half asleep, the TV remote still in her hand.Lein stood in the bathroom doorway, his hair still wet, and the only thing covering his body was a white towel wrapped low around his waist.Sera stared. And didn't stop staring right away.Because the body in front of her didn't exactly make it easy to look away.Lein's shoulders were broad but not overdone. His chest was wide and solid. His abs were cleanly defined, and not like a bodybuilder's, but like someone whose body hadn't been built in a gym, but by something far harsher than that. Not a single inch felt like too much or too little. Everything was exactly right, and perfect.Absolutely perfect.So... this guy had a body like that?Sera swallowed.Once. Silently. But it felt incredibly loud in her own throat. Her cheeks had been flushed since the very first second, and instead of getting better, they only got worse with every passing moment.Th
