The courtyard of the garrison was a symphony of splintering wood and rhythmic, wet tearing. Leon moved like a specter of violence, his boots sliding through a slurry of mud and viscous black ichor. Beside him, Jax swung his shield with a frantic, uncoordinated desperation, his breath coming in sharp, serrated gasps.

"Leon! Behind you! Left!" Jax screamed, his voice cracking with the strain of holding his position.

Leon pivoted without looking, his short-sword whistling through the air in a perfect horizontal arc. The blade carved through the neck of a lunging Rift Stalker before it could close the distance. "Don’t watch the ones in front, Jax! Watch the shadows! They move through the dark!"

"I can't see them! It’s too chaotic! How are you even spotting them?" Jax yelled, parrying a snap from another creature’s mandibles.

"Focus on the rhythm! Every time they strike, there's a hum in the air! Listen for it!" Leon barked, his eyes darting across the courtyard, his veins pulsing with the dark, cold power of the System.

"[Warning: Corruption levels reaching twelve percent. Host heartbeat exceeding 170 BPM. Recommend immediate tactical shift,]" the system echoed in his mind.

"Not now!" Leon hissed, vaulting over the body of a fallen guard to slam his heel into the temple of a Stalker that had pinned an archer to the ground.

"Leon, look! The gate!" Jax pointed toward the main breach, his eyes bulging. "Is that... reinforcements?"

A blinding, celestial pillar of light tore through the swirling darkness of the rift above. It was a searing, golden radiance that smelled of ozone and sanctity. As the light touched the ground, the Rift Stalkers nearby shrieked, their bodies dissolving into harmless ash upon contact.

"By the gods," Jax whispered, his sword dipping. "Is that the Order of the Silver Dawn?"

From the center of the radiant light, a tall figure emerged, clad in armor that seemed to be forged from moonlight itself. He held a sword that hummed with a low, divine frequency. Even through the smoke and the stench of decay, the man moved with a grace that was entirely detached from the carnage around him.

"Pathetic," the man said, his voice ringing with a cold, aristocratic clarity.

"Ares," Leon breathed. The name felt like a jagged piece of glass in his throat.

The Hero Ares flicked his wrist, and a wave of holy fire erupted, incinerating a dozen Stalkers in a single, fluid motion. He scanned the courtyard, his eyes landing briefly on Kael, then sweeping toward Leon and Jax.

"You lot. Secure the lower flank. I’ll deal with the rift," Ares commanded, his tone brook no argument.

"Yes, my lord!" Jax stammered, his posture stiffening as he scrambled to obey.

Leon stood frozen, his hand tightening around the hilt of his sword until his knuckles turned bloodless. My murderer, he thought, his blood running cold despite the heat of the fire. Twenty years ago, you looked exactly like that. Clean. Perfect. A saint with a butcher’s heart.

"Well? Are you deaf, recruit?" Ares turned his piercing, golden eyes toward Leon, a flicker of irritation crossing his handsome features. "Do you enjoy watching your comrades die, or do you have a death wish of your own?"

Leon forced a mask of dull obedience onto his face, bowing his head. "No, my lord. We are moving."

"Good," Ares said, dismissing him as if he were nothing more than a piece of grit on his boot. "Try not to be in my way when I purge this filth."

"He’s a piece of work, isn't he?" Jax hissed as they sprinted toward the wall. "But at least he’s clearing the field. We’ve got a chance now!"

"Don't get complacent," Leon growled, his gaze fixed on Ares’s back. "He’s just another variable. Keep your guard up."

"Why are you so bitter? He just saved our lives!" Jax protested, swinging his shield to bash a stray Stalker.

"He saved his own glory," Leon muttered. "Look at the rift, Jax. He’s not closing it; he’s feeding his own ego."

The battle intensified. The Stalkers seemed to sense the immense power radiating from Ares and began to converge on the courtyard in waves. It was a desperate struggle. Leon felt the System screaming at him to engage, to tap into the well of shadow energy that lay coiled in his stomach like a viper.

"Leon! Help!" Jax stumbled as a Stalker lunged from the shadows, its serrated claws hooking into his leather pauldron.

Leon didn't think. He didn't use the holy light. He stepped into the shadow of a burning carriage, and for a split second, his body disintegrated into ink. He reappeared behind the Stalker, his blade dark and humming with a sickly, violet energy. He sliced upward, the blade passing through the creature's spine with minimal resistance.

"Got it," Leon breathed, his chest heaving.

"What was that?" Jax scrambled up, clutching his arm. "That sword... it looked like it was bleeding shadow."

"Just an trick of the light, Jax. Get up," Leon snapped, his heart stopping as he felt a gaze burning into his back.

Ares stood ten paces away, his sword tipped toward the ground. He had finished off a knot of beasts and was now staring directly at the spot where Leon had emerged from the shadow.

"Recruit," Ares called out, his voice smooth but edged with steel.

"My lord?" Leon forced his voice to remain steady.

"Your movement," Ares said, walking toward him with a slow, predatory grace. "It was... unorthodox. Most Vanguards fight like oxen. You moved like a drop of ink in the night."

"I was just lucky, my lord," Leon replied, keeping his eyes on the ground.

"Luck," Ares repeated, a thin, mirthless smile curling his lips. "Luck is for those who cannot control their own fate. That shadow you stepped into... I felt a hunger coming from it. A dark, hollow hunger."

"I don't know what you mean, my lord," Leon said, the hatred inside him burning so brightly he feared it might set the air on fire.

"Don't you?" Ares stepped closer, his aura of holy light pushing back the surrounding smoke. "Perhaps I was mistaken. Or perhaps this garrison has been hiding something more than just incompetence."

"We’ve been fighting for our lives, my lord. We don't have time for tricks," Leon said, meeting Ares’s gaze for the first time.

Ares held the stare, his eyes flickering with a golden, analytical light. He tilted his head, his sword tip rising to brush against the fabric of Leon's tunic. "Your eyes, recruit. They don't look like they belong to a boy who just learned how to hold a spear."

"I’ve learned a lot in the last twenty-four hours, my lord," Leon retorted.

"Clearly," Ares remarked, his voice dropping to a dangerous, low hum.

Suddenly, a massive, screeching Stalker—the largest one yet—dropped from the broken rafters directly above them. Ares didn't even look up; he slashed upward with a casual, lazy flick of his wrist. A crescent of pure, blinding light bisected the beast.

The explosion of energy sent a shockwave through the courtyard, knocking Leon backward into a pile of stone debris. He hit the wall hard, his vision swimming.

"Get up," Ares said, looming over him like a judge. "The rift is weakening, but the filth remains. Finish the task, or I’ll finish you."

Leon struggled to his feet, his hands shaking. He looked at the mangled remains of the Stalker Ares had just slain, then back at the Hero.

"I'm not finished, my lord," Leon said, his grip on his sword tightening.

"We shall see," Ares murmured. He turned away, his attention diverted by a massive tremor from the rift above.

Leon stood in the shadow, his fingers digging into the stone wall. Soon, he promised himself. Not today. Not when the world is looking. But soon, I will take your light, and I will leave you in the same darkness you left me.

"Leon! Stop staring and move!" Jax yelled, hauling him toward the breach.

Leon took a breath, the cold darkness of the system settling over his nerves like armor. "I'm coming, Jax. I'm coming."

As they ran, Ares’s voice followed them, quiet and chilling. "That shadow energy... what kind of monster are you?"

Leon didn't look back. He simply kept running, his heart a steady, lethal rhythm, ready to survive whatever hell the Hero brought to his doorstep.

The heavy iron door of the barracks slammed shut, leaving Leon alone with the silence. The muffled cries of Thomas being dragged down the corridor toward the isolation chambers grew fainter, finally swallowed by the thick stone walls."He's screaming my name, System. Why is it so quiet in here?" Leon whispered, gripping his bed frame until his knuckles turned white."[Host, focus. The soul capacity expansion is initiating. Do not lose your grip on reality,]" the voice responded, indifferent to the suffering outside."Reality? My reality is being rewritten by a god-complex machine," Leon muttered, his teeth gritting together as the sensation of boiling lead poured into his veins. The clinic smelled of acrid herbs and stagnant blood. Leon sat on a wooden stool, his palms wrapped in rough, stained linen, watching the door. The air inside the garrison was suffocating; it was the heavy, static silence that preceded a lightning strike.Kael’s parting words echoed in the small, dim room. Every recruit is being questioned."Leon? You in here?"The voice was thin, reedy, and frantic. Thomas poked his head inside, his face pale and blotchy from crying. He hurried over, ignoring the healer who was busy with a row of wounded soldiers further down the hall."Thomas? What are you doing here? You should be in the barracks resting," Leon said, keeping his voice low."I can’t sleep, Leon. They’re everywhere. The MPs—they’re walking up and down the halls with lists. I heard them talking. They think it was an inside job by someone who knew the guard rotations for the inner keep," Thomas whispered, his hands trembling. "They’re checking everyone’s lockers. They searched Jax’s st

"How much further, System?" Leon whispered, his voice barely a breath in the chill night air as his boots lightly touched the gravel below Kael's office window."Answering. "The ambient magic density there is exceptionally low, minimizing the risk of detection during the limit break sequence.""Good," Leon muttered, pulling his hood over his face and pressing into the deep shadows of the armory wall.
