His father answered on the first ring. "They won't let me up," Alexander said quietly. "I'm in your lobby."

"Stay where you are," his father said, and hung up.

The old security man was walking toward him now, slowly. He did not want to throw anybody out, but the manager was watching him.

At the front desk, the receptionist had her phone to her ear. She had rung the top floor on her own, to ask about the young man with the bottle. She listened, and her eyes went wide.

He did not want to throw anybody out, but the manager was watching him.At the front desk, the receptionist had her phone to her ear. She had rung the top floor on her own, to ask about the young man with the bottle. She listened, and her eyes went wide."Yes, sir. The young man in the grey shirt. Right away, sir." She put the phone down and looked at the manager. "The top floor says send him up. Now."The security man stopped where he was. The manager let go of Kevin's hand. "The top floor? Who on the top floor?""I don't know, sir. They just said now."The manager's face went red in front of his important guest. Then he looked at Alexander's wrinkled shirt, and he smiled again."Fine. The top floor needs a floor man. Somebody must have spilled something." He waved at th

Monica's hand slid off Sophia's sleeve, and she didn't say another word.Outside, Vincent Hale's own driver held the car door open for them. He didn't look once at Alexander's cheap shirt. The back seat smelled of leather and somebody else's cigar. At the hospital, Emily climbed out for her night shift and waved to them through the rain.Somewhere behind that glass, her mother was on a waiting list."Alexander." Sophia kept her voice low. "Grandpa doesn't know about the divorce. And tonight he heard you call him Grandpa on a loudspeaker.""Then he heard the truth. I'm married to his granddaughter."She turned to the window. "That isn't the part that scares me.""You are right. your grandpa's face is the part that scares you.""You are bad!" Sophia said and pinched Alex."Oucch.. it is hurt!" Alex laughed. The next morning, Alexander sat on Sophia's cold floor and breathed. His one grain of spirit energy was still small, but it was growing. His cheap phone buzzed. It was his father.Co

"Alexander," Sophia whispered. "Don't kneel.""I won't," he said. Then, to Vincent: "You're stupid if you think I'll kneel.""Then she drinks," Vincent said. "All night. And you watch. From your knees or from your feet, it's all the same to me."Alexander looked at the girls behind him. At Sophia, holding her own wrist, still red from the fat man's grip. At Monica's red cheek. At Kevin's girlfriend, still wiping her eyes."You like phone calls," he said. "So do I."He took out his cheap phone.Vincent laughed out loud. "What's that? A calculator? Are you calling your mother?"Around the walls, his men laughed with him. Even the woman in red smiled.Alexander pressed the number Danny had put into his phone on the general's steps. It rang once."Son." The old voice was clear and dry. Alexander put it on the loudspeaker for everyone to hear."Sir. You said to ask you first if I ever needed help.""I did. Ask.""One man at a door. The Silver Crown, in the new district. A man named Vincent

"He won't shout his name down a hall again," Emily whispered, so low only Sophia and Alexander heard.Vincent lit a fresh cigar. "The boys can go home," he said. "The girls stay and drink with us tonight. That's the price of a kick in my house.""You can't do that." Monica's voice came out high and thin. "You can't keep us here. That's... that's against the law."Vincent looked at her for the first time. "The law," he said, and smiled. "Then you stay first.""Mr. Hale, please." Ryan's hands were up. "She doesn't mean it. She's just upset. For my father's sake...""Your father?" Vincent picked up his whisky glass and threw it at the wall beside Ryan's head.It exploded. Glass and whisky ran down the leather. Two of the girls screamed. One of the boys made it all the way to the door before the man there put a hand flat on his chest and moved him back again, gently, like a piece of furniture."I said the boys go home," Vincent said quietly. "The next one who says father to me goes home w

"Oh, relax." Monica held her glass up high, so the mirrors could see it. "So what? Ryan's father can fix anything. His father sells cars to half the city hall. Can't he, babe?"Ryan smiled and lifted his glass back. "Anything. Relax, people. Drink."And because they wanted to believe it, they did. The music went back up. Another cork went. In five minutes, the fat man in the hall was a funny story.Alexander was not laughing. He was remembering.A story from his first life, half-heard at a business dinner years from now. A night at the Silver Crown, when some rich kids kicked the wrong man in a hallway. The boy who kicked never walked right again. And one of the girls, they said, did not come home that night at all.He had laughed into his wine, then, and asked for more.He looked at Sophia on the edge of the chair, and the laughter in his memory turned to ash.He stood up and held out his hand to her. "Sophia. It's late. We're going home."Monica's face went hard. "Excuse me? Going h

Alexander's wrist did not move an inch. Ryan pushed harder, and it still didn't, and after a second he let go and laughed as if he had meant to.Alexander did not move. And Sophia stood up so fast her chair went over behind her."He's my husband," she said. Her voice shook. She made it stop. "Not your waiter."For a second nobody said anything. The music thumped on behind the wall. Then Monica smiled. "Then sit him on your lap, darling."The laughter came back like a wave and knocked Sophia's words flat. She stood there with her face burning. Her chair was on the floor. Her name was on a card that said she was paying for all of this.Down the table, another chair scraped.Emily Ford stood up, slowly, the way people do things they have been afraid of for years. She pulled out her own chair, the plain one at the very end, and pushed it toward Alexander until it touched his knees."Take mine," she said."Emily," Monica snapped. "Sit down.""I've sat down for you long enough." Emily's voi
