the final test

Three Years Before the Present Day

Nine young people stood in silence inside a dimly lit hall.

They were dressed entirely in tight black garments, their faces hidden beneath featureless masks. Rows of candles flickered along the stone walls, casting distorted shadows that danced across the chamber.

Before them stood a middle-aged man clad in dark robes.

"You nine are the finest candidates of your generation," he said calmly. "You survived the competition for the position of the Shadow."

His sharp gaze swept across them.

"But there cannot be nine Shadows. Only one may inherit the title."

The atmosphere in the hall grew heavier.

"The rest of you," he continued, "will become the pillars supporting the Shadow Village. Yet before any of you can ascend to the position of Shadow, you must complete one final test."

He paused.

"One final mission."

None of the nine moved.

"The one who successfully completes this mission will become the next Shadow."

A faint smile appeared on the man's face.

"You may use any method you desire. Deception, manipulation, violence—it does not matter. Only those with the will, intellect, and resolve to do whatever is necessary deserve to stand at the top."

The hall fell silent once more.

"Now," the man said, stepping aside, "the Grand Elder will personally explain the details of the mission. Listen carefully."

The sound of slow footsteps soon echoed from deep within the darkness beyond the hall.

The instant they heard them, all nine candidates immediately dropped to one knee and lowered their heads.

Not one dared to look upward.

Within Shadow Mountain, there existed a sacred rule:

Never look directly into the Grand Elder's eyes.

Disobedience was unforgivable.

And punishment within Shadow Mountain was something none of them wished to experience again.

The brutal training they had endured since childhood had permanently engraved fear into their minds and bodies. Even the memory of those punishments was enough to awaken deep psychological scars buried within them.

The footsteps finally stopped.

An old man appeared before them.

Though he looked to be nearly ninety years old, there was nothing frail about him. Beneath his loose robes hid a terrifying presence that made him feel more like a dormant beast than an elderly man.

The Grand Elder observed the kneeling candidates with visible satisfaction.

"Good," he said. "Very good."

"I have watched all of your progress over the years. You are among the finest batches Shadow Mountain has produced since I became Grand Elder."

The nine remained motionless.

"This will be your final mission. After this, all of you will officially graduate from the program."

His voice became colder.

"But as you already know... only one Shadow emerges every ten years."

"Only one of you will stand at the top."

"The rest will serve beneath them."

A suffocating pressure filled the hall.

"So give everything you have," the Grand Elder continued. "Do not waste the years of suffering and sacrifice that brought you here."

After a brief pause, he finally explained the mission.

"This assignment comes from the Church Faction—the Church of Light."

"The Empire of Luminous has recently faced significant instability due to Duke Kevin's military campaign. His actions have severely harmed the Church's interests."

The Grand Elder narrowed his eyes.

"Your mission is to assassinate Duke Kevin."

Several of the candidates subtly stiffened.

"This will not be easy," he continued. "One month from now, during the Empire's Spring Festival, Duke Kevin will leave his territory and travel toward the capital city of Luminaris."

"That journey will be your only opportunity."

"Once he reaches the capital, eliminating him will become nearly impossible."

The Grand Elder slowly turned away.

"You are free to prepare however you wish. Weapons, intelligence, funds, forged identities—you may request everything through the deacon."

"I wish you all good fortune."

With that, the old man disappeared back into the darkness from which he had come.

Only after his presence vanished did the crushing pressure in the hall finally ease.

One by one, the nine candidates stood and left.

Except for one.

The middle-aged instructor noticed him lingering behind.

"You're still here," he said. "Is there something you wish to say?"

The masked young man remained silent for a moment before speaking.

"You said infighting is forbidden," he said quietly. "But you know this mission will turn into a bloodbath."

"They'll sabotage each other. Manipulate each other. Maybe even kill each other."

The instructor gave a faint grin.

"And who's stopping you from doing the same?"

The young man clenched his fists beneath his sleeves.

"I don't want to kill my fellow brothers and sisters for the sake of an empty title."

A brief silence followed.

"If that's what becoming Shadow requires," he said, "then I willingly withdraw from the competition."

The instructor's expression immediately darkened.

"You know that isn't possible."

His voice became colder.

"And you understand the consequences of attempting to withdraw."

The young man fell silent.

The instructor sighed heavily.

"Mark... you're still too soft-hearted."

"Even after everything Shadow Mountain put you through, you still haven't abandoned your empathy."

He shook his head slightly.

"I suppose it makes sense. You joined the program later than the others. There wasn't enough time to completely temper your heart."

At the mention of the training and punishments, painful memories surfaced in Mark's mind.

Screams.

Blood.

Dark rooms.

Endless pain.

His expression beneath the mask hardened.

The instructor looked at him quietly before speaking again.

"Go. I'll pretend I never heard what you said."

"Do not argue further."

"This is the last bit of leniency I am willing to show you."

Mark understood immediately.

Continuing the conversation would only make things worse.

Without another word, he turned and walked toward the exit.

As he reached the doorway, the instructor's voice echoed behind him one final time.

"Mark."

Mark stopped.

"Do not approach this mission half-heartedly."

The instructor's tone turned ice cold.

"You know what happens to failures."

A brief silence followed.

"And never forget..."

"We will be watching all of you."

"All the time."

After stepping out of the bar, Mark headed directly toward his jeep.Once inside the vehicle, he locked the doors and unfolded the piece of paper he had obtained beneath the cocktail glass.Written on it was a set of coordinates.Nothing else.No names. No instructions.Exactly how professionals operated.Mark took out the newly purchased burner phone from his pocket and entered the coordinates into the navigation system.A route immediately appeared on the screen.Without wasting time, he started the engine and drove toward the destination.Outside Black City, hundreds of abandoned towns and ghost villages were scattered throughout the surrounding wastelands.Over the years, smugglers, mercenary groups, fugitives, traffickers, and underground organizations had occupied many of these forgotten settlements.Every territory belonged to someone. And clashes between rival groups occurred almost daily. The deeper one traveled into the outskirts surrounding Black City, the weaker the law be

Mark stepped out of the Deacon's office with the sealed envelope tucked securely inside his coat. The heavy iron door closed behind him with a dull metallic thud. For several seconds, he stood silently in the corridor before finally beginning to walk.As his footsteps echoed through the dim underground passageways, Mark quietly reorganized his plans.Yesterday, he had already discarded Plan A.Now, Plan B had become useless as well. The problem was not that he had offended the Deacon. Honestly, offending the Deacon was far from the biggest issue. The real problem was that the leak regarding compromised identities had now spread throughout Shadow Mountain.Yesterday, only Mark knew that several foreign intelligence agencies had likely obtained information regarding the candidates' fake identities and travel routes. But now?Everyone knew.Mark's eyes narrowed slightly beneath his mask. The higher-ups had intentionally released the information. There was no other explanation.A candidat

Finally, after silently gritting his teeth, he spoke."I would prefer to receive the package personally."The Deacon raised an eyebrow."I don't trust others handling mission-sensitive materials," Mark continued calmly. "My plans cannot be exposed under any circumstances. If possible, give me a time and location. I will retrieve everything myself."For several seconds, the room remained silent. Then an amused smile slowly appeared on the Deacon's face."Do you take me for a servant?" the old man asked lazily."You think I would sacrifice my rest for your convenience?"His eyes narrowed slightly."This is also part of your evaluation. If you cannot build loyal subordinates or maintain operational secrecy, then you have already failed before the mission even begins."The Deacon waved his hand dismissively."Now get out. Your package will arrive before dawn."Mark gave a small nod and turned toward the exit without arguing further. But inwardly, his thoughts had already begun moving rapi

The continent itself was divided into three hostile regions. To the south stretched an endless sea of scorching desert, where violent sandstorms could bury entire convoys within hours. The central region was dominated by colossal mountain ranges that extended from east to west like a frozen wall splitting the continent in half. Temperatures there remained below freezing throughout most of the year. The northern region, however, was different. Vast forests, deep valleys, and towering green mountains covered the land beneath a blanket of mist.Hidden deep within those northern mountains stood Shadow Mountain.Despite Solaris being rich in minerals, rare resources, and undiscovered energy reserves, almost no major
