CHAPTER 3 - THE GIRL WITH FAMILIAR EYES

Kael couldn’t sleep.

The words repeated themselves in his mind.

You are remembering.

Not awakening.

Remembering.

That distinction frightened him more than anything else.

He sat in the back seat of Adrian’s car as dawn approached.

Neither brother spoke.

Eventually, Kael broke the silence.

“What exactly is my family?”

Adrian kept his eyes on the road.

“Human.”

“That’s not what Grandfather meant.”

“I know.”

“Then tell me.”

Adrian sighed.

“Our family has guarded something for generations.”

“What?”

“I don’t know.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“I expect you to believe that I don’t know.”

Kael looked through the window.

The city was beginning to wake.

People walked to work.

Cars filled the roads.

Children waited beside bus stops.

Everything looked normal.

But Kael no longer trusted normal.

His phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

He answered.

“Hello?”

Silence.

Then a woman’s voice.

“You shouldn’t have touched the door.”

Kael sat upright.

“Who is this?”

“You already know.”

“Seraphina?”

A soft laugh came through the phone.

“Good.”

The call ended.

Kael stared at the screen.

Adrian glanced at him.

“Who was that?”

“I don’t know.”

But Kael did know.

Somewhere deep inside him, he recognized her voice.

Not from this life.

From thousands of years ago.

---

That afternoon, Kael went to the university library.

He didn’t know why.

Something had been pulling him there since morning.

He walked between shelves until he reached the ancient history section.

A book lay on the floor.

He picked it up.

MYTHS OF THE FIRST AGE

He opened it.

The first page contained a drawing.

A throne.

A black ocean.

Three moons.

Kael’s fingers went numb.

The image was identical to his dream.

He turned the page.

There was a drawing of a woman.

Violet eyes.

Silver hair.

Kael dropped the book.

Someone caught it before it hit the floor.

“Looking for something?”

Kael looked up.

Seraphina.

She was wearing a simple black dress.

No armor.

No supernatural appearance.

Just a beautiful woman standing in a university library.

But her presence made the room feel smaller.

Kael stared at her.

“You.”

She smiled.

“Me.”

“How did you get here?”

“I walked.”

“You know what I mean.”

“I know.”

She handed him the book.

Their fingers touched.

A violent wave passed through both of them.

Kael saw a desert.

Seraphina saw a battlefield.

They both gasped.

For a moment, they weren’t in the library.

They were standing beneath a burning sky.

Kael was wearing black armor.

Seraphina wore silver.

Their hands were intertwined.

A massive creature approached.

Kael raised a sword.

Seraphina whispered:

“If you die, I die.”

Kael answered:

“Then we don’t die.”

The vision vanished.

Both stood frozen.

Seraphina’s eyes were wet.

“You remembered.”

Kael’s voice was barely audible.

“That wasn’t a dream.”

“No.”

“Who were we?”

She stared at him.

“We have been many things.”

“How many?”

“I don’t know.”

“How do you know me?”

Her expression became serious.

“Because I have been searching for you.”

“Why?”

She stepped closer.

“Because something is coming.”

“What?”

She looked around the library.

Then whispered:

“The beings who killed you the last time.”

Kael’s blood turned cold.

“I died?”

Seraphina nodded.

“And you killed them?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

Her eyes met his.

“Because you told me not to.”

Kael stared at her.

“Why would I tell you that?”

Seraphina smiled sadly.

“Because you knew this life was different.”

Before Kael could ask another question, the lights went out.

Every book in the library fell from its shelf simultaneously.

A dark shape appeared at the end of the corridor.

Seraphina grabbed Kael’s hand.

“Run.”

The thing at the end of the corridor smiled.

It had Kael’s face.

Only a world stretching beneath a pale morning sun. For several seconds, Kael said nothing. Seraphina stood beside him, violet eyes moving slowly across the horizon. Luna was between them, barefoot in the grass, her silver hair stirring in a wind that seemed to come from everywhere and nowhere. Kael looked down. He was wearing the same clothes he had worn in his mother's kitchen. A simple shirt. Dark trousers. Human hands. He flexed his fingers. Nothing happened. No ancient fire. No wings. No dragon scales. No crown. No pressure from the heavens. He took a breath. Air filled his lungs. It smelled of wet earth. Grass. Rain. Somewhere far away, someone was cooking. Kael almost smiled. "Is this it?" he asked. Seraphina glanced at him. "No." Her answer was immediate. Kae

Welcome home, Azael. The voice traveled through the white emptiness. Kael did not move. Neither did Seraphina. The child stood between them, staring at the figure seated upon the throne. The brother had gone pale. The Architect had disappeared entirely. That frightened Kael more than the throne. He looked at the seated figure. Same face. Same eyes. Same scar beneath the left eyebrow. Even the same slight tilt of the head when he was studying something he did not understand. But there was one difference. The figure looked peaceful. Too peaceful. Kael's hand slowly tightened around Seraphina's. “Who are you?” The figure smiled. “You already know.” “No.” “You have known me longer than you have known yourself.” Kael stepped forward. The figure leaned against the throne. “That's impossible.” “Is it?” A small laugh. “You have spent your entire existence believing beginnings matter.” The throne beneath him seemed to breathe. “But you never asked what existed befo
