Chapter 1: The Beating That Changed Everything

The kicks kept coming.

Shen Hao curled into a ball on the dirty ground, arms wrapped tight around his head. Pain shot through his thin body with every blow. His ribs felt like they were cracking one by one. Blood filled his mouth. He coughed and spit it out, but more kept coming.

“Look at this trash!” Young Master Zhao laughed. His shiny blue robes stayed clean while he kicked. “You bumped into me with your dirty rags. Who’s going to pay for that, huh?”

His two friends laughed and kicked harder.

Shen Hao was only fourteen. He was small and weak. His body always hurt more than normal people. Even a simple fall made him feel like his bones were breaking. Right now it felt like the whole world was trying to crush him.

But he did not cry out. He did not beg.

His black eyes stayed open and angry.

“Still looking at me like that?” Zhao snarled. He kicked Shen Hao hard in the stomach. “A nobody who can’t even cultivate dares stare at me? You’re nothing! You will always be nothing!”

The kicks finally stopped. Zhao wiped his shoe on Shen Hao’s clothes and walked away with his friends, still laughing.

Shen Hao lay there for a long time. Every breath hurt. He slowly pushed himself up against the wall of the alley. His left shoulder felt wrong. His ribs screamed. He counted the injuries in his mind the way he always did.

Four broken ribs. Dislocated shoulder. Internal bleeding. Worse than last month.

He tried the breathing method he had watched cultivators use. Nothing happened. His dantian stayed empty. His meridians stayed blocked. He had known for years that his body was broken. No Qi ever came.

He started walking. Every step was slow and painful. He had to stop many times.

A rough voice spoke behind him.

“Need help, kid?”

Shen Hao turned. An old man in dirty gray robes stood there. His hair was messy and long. His eyes were sharp and dark, but they looked kind of lazy too. He looked like a beggar who had not washed in weeks.

Shen Hao stared at him for a second, then nodded once.

“Thanks, Uncle.”

“Call me Uncle Gu.”

The old man walked closer. He put a hand on Shen Hao’s shoulder. A warm feeling spread through the boy’s body. In just a few breaths, the worst of the pain eased.

Shen Hao’s eyes widened.

“You… you’re a cultivator?”

Uncle Gu smiled a little. “Something like that. Your body is a mess, kid. Broken bones, torn muscles, blocked meridians, and almost no food in you for a long time. How are you still walking?”

“I’m used to it,” Shen Hao said quietly.

Uncle Gu looked at him for a long moment. Then he sighed.

“Come on. Show me where you live. I’ll fix the rest.”

Shen Hao led him to the edge of town. His home was a small wooden shack with holes in the roof. The bed was just a flat rock with an old sheet on it. Sunlight came through the holes and made bright spots on the dirty floor.

Uncle Gu looked around and shook his head. “Nice place.”

He made Shen Hao lie down. Warm energy flowed from the old man’s hands into the boy’s body. Bones moved back into place. Torn flesh knitted together. The pain was sharp and fast. Shen Hao clenched his teeth and stayed quiet until everything went black.

When he woke up, the sun had moved. Uncle Gu sat on the floor with his eyes closed. Thick waves of power rolled off him, but they stayed inside the shack. The walls did not break. Shen Hao had never felt energy like that before.

He moved his arms and legs. The broken bones were gone. He could move again.

His stomach still hurt a little, but it was nothing compared to before.

Uncle Gu opened one eye. His stomach made a loud growling sound.

“Been a long time since I ate real food.”

Shen Hao quickly went to the corner and brought out the last piece of smoked meat he had saved. He held it out with both hands and bowed.

“Please eat this, Uncle Gu. Thank you for helping me.”

The old man looked at the small piece of meat, then at the empty room. “That’s all you have left, isn’t it?”

“Please take it.”

Uncle Gu took it and broke it in half. “Sit. We share.”

They ate in silence for a while. Then Uncle Gu spoke.

“You noticed my energy earlier. Most kids your age wouldn’t. How?”

Shen Hao wiped his mouth. “I watch people. I compare things. Your energy felt thicker and older than anything I’ve seen in town.”

Uncle Gu raised an eyebrow. “You’re sharp. Too sharp for a kid living like this. Why haven’t you joined a sect or found a master?”

“My body is too weak. Even jumping hurts. No one wants a worker who falls down from small pain. And… I can’t cultivate. My meridians are blocked.”

Uncle Gu was quiet for a moment. Then he said, “Show me your hands.”

Shen Hao held them out. The old man studied the thin fingers and the many small scars.

“You taught yourself to read and write, didn’t you? I saw the paper and brushes.”

Shen Hao nodded. “I pick them from the trash. The zither too. I carved it myself. It helps when the nights get too quiet.”

Uncle Gu leaned back against the wall. His eyes looked deeper now.

“Kid, tell me the truth. What do you want most?”

Shen Hao’s hands tightened into fists. The memory of Zhao’s kicks and the laughing faces burned in his chest.

“I don’t want to be weak anymore. I don’t want to lie on the ground while people kick me and call me trash. I want to get strong. Strong enough that no one can ever do this to me again. Strong enough to make them regret it.”

His voice stayed low, but every word was hard and clear.

Uncle Gu watched him for a long time. Then a strange light appeared in the old man’s eyes.

“Come here.”

Shen Hao moved closer. Uncle Gu placed one hand on the boy’s head and the other on his own forehead. His eyes closed.

The shack became completely silent.

Suddenly Uncle Gu’s eyes snapped open. For the first time, the lazy look was gone. Shock and something like excitement filled his face.

“What… is this?” he whispered. “Heavenly Conqueror fate… A boy with the potential to stand above the gods… and a body this broken?”

Shen Hao stared at him. “Uncle Gu?”

The old man slowly smiled. It was not a kind smile. It was the smile of someone who had just found a rare treasure.

“Listen carefully, Shen Hao. I can fix your body. I can open the path of cultivation for you. But the method is dangerous. The pain will be worse than anything you have ever felt. If you lose yourself in that pain, you will die. Even I won’t be able to save you.”

He leaned forward.

“Are you willing to risk everything?”

Shen Hao did not look away. The fire in his eyes burned brighter than before.

“Yes.”

Uncle Gu’s smile grew wider.

“Good. Then from this moment on, your old life is over.”

Outside the shack, the wind suddenly picked up. Dark clouds began to gather over the small town of Xian, as if the heavens themselves had noticed that something had changed.
