Chapter 7 Hidden Intervention

The air inside the main boardroom felt heavy enough to choke a man.

Julian’s point man, a sleek corporate lawyer named Marcus Vance—no relation to me, thank God—adjusted his rimless glasses. He slid a thick stack of legal documents across the polished mahogany table directly toward Evelyn.

"The terms are generous, Miss Sterling," Marcus said. His voice carried that slimy, rehearsed confidence typical of men who think money buys immunity from consequences. "The Hayes Group absorbs forty-nine percent of your operational debt. In exchange, you assign voting control of your core technology patents to Julian Hayes. You sign today, or your creditors pull the plug by noon."

Evelyn sat rigid in her high-backed leather chair. Her knuckles were white where her hands gripped the arms. She looked composed on the outside—cool, detached, every bit the ice-queen CEO the media made her out to be. But standing two feet behind her shoulder, I saw the tiny tremor in her jaw.

She was drowning, and these vultures knew it.

"This isn't an acquisition proposal," Evelyn said, her voice smooth despite the pressure. "It is corporate extortion. Sterling Enterprises holds three proprietary patents in green energy grid management. You are offering pennies on the dollar."

"We are offering a lifeline," Marcus countered, tapping his silver pen against the table. "You have thirty minutes before the local clearing bank declares your short-term credit lines in default. When that happens, your stock plunges forty percent before the closing bell. So, sign the paper. Save your grandfather's company."

I stood behind Evelyn with my arms crossed behind my back. My plain black suit blended seamlessly into the wall paneling. To Marcus and the four hostile board members sitting across from us, I was just background furniture. A cheap security guard hired to carry folders and look intimidating.

They didn't pay any attention to my right hand, which rested casually against the back of Evelyn’s chair.

Tucked into the lining of my sleeve was a tiny micro-transceiver. I tapped my index finger against my cuff three times in a precise, rhythmic sequence. Three short taps.

A faint, almost imperceptible buzz vibrated in my inner ear canal. Ghost was online.

“I’m reading the room’s audio, Boss,” Ghost’s quiet voice hummed directly through my auditory nerve unit. “Marcus Vance is using a localized signal jammer under his portfolio to keep Miss Sterling from reaching her primary investors. Want me to fry his laptop?”

I didn't open my mouth. I didn't need to. I tapped my cuff twice. Negative.

Then I tapped a short code using my fingertips against the leather of Evelyn's chair: two long, three short.

“Understood,” Ghost replied, a faint note of malicious glee creeping into his tone. “Initiating the Black Iron Treasury protocol. Target: River City Regional Clearing Bank and the Hayes Group’s secondary liquidity reserves. Executing in three, two, one...”

In the boardroom, Marcus leaned forward, sliding a Montblanc pen toward Evelyn. "Time is ticking, Miss Sterling. Your board members are ready to vote you out for fiduciary negligence if you don't sign. Make the smart choice."

Evelyn reached for the pen. Her fingers hovered over the cold metal. I could see the defeat settling in her eyes, a quiet heartbreak as she prepared to surrender her family's legacy to protect her employees from immediate bankruptcy.

"Don't," I said.

The word was quiet, but in the tense silence of the boardroom, it sounded like a gunshot.

Marcus blinked, staring at me with sudden, sharp annoyance. "Excuse me? Who let the security guard speak?"

"Lucas," Evelyn murmured, glancing up at me with a mixture of shock and quiet desperation. "Stay out of this."

"He's right, Miss Sterling," one of the corrupt board members sneered, waving a hand dismissively at me. "Know your place, boy. You're paid to stand by the door, not give business advice to your superiors."

I didn't move an inch. I kept my gaze fixed entirely on Marcus. "She shouldn't sign. The Hayes Group doesn't have the leverage they claim."

"This is absurd!" Marcus laughed, slamming his palm on the table. "I have the bank's default order right here on my tablet! In twenty minutes, Sterling Enterprises is bankrupt!"

Anyway, right on cue, the heavy silence of the room shattered.

It wasn't just one phone.

Every single landline desk phone lined along the perimeter of the boardroom began to ring simultaneously. At the exact same second, Marcus's personal cell phone, his tablet, and the phones of all four corrupt board members burst into a chaotic wall of loud, shrill emergency alerts.

Marcus frowned, dropping his pen as his phone vibrated violently across the glass tabletop.

He picked it up. His smug expression instantly evaporated, replaced by a pale, frozen mask of absolute terror.

Across the room, the primary desk speakerphone automatically switched to speaker mode, playing an automated high-priority broadcast from the Central Financial Authority.

“Emergency Alert. All short-term credit facilities for the Hayes Group have been unilaterally suspended pending an immediate capital solvency audit...”

Evelyn froze, her hand dropping away from the contract as she stared at the blaring phones in total disbelief.

The air in the basement garage smelled like burnt diesel and wet concrete. By the way, forty-eight stories above us, Evelyn was still sitting in a tense board meeting. She thought her chief technical strategist was simply taking a late coffee break. He was not taking a coffee break.I stood by the heavy steel exit door, watching Arthur Sterling, the senior executive who had been leaking company secrets for six months. He carried a leather briefcase stuffed with encrypted flash drives containing our newest patent designs. He walked fast. His polished designer shoes squeaked against the epoxy floor."Going somewhere, Vice President Arthur?" I asked.Arthur stopped cold. He turned around, his expensive silk tie slightly crooked. He looked at my cheap security guard jacket with total disdain."What are you doing down here, Vance?" he barked. His voice echoed off the concrete pillars. "Move out of my way. I have an urgent off-site client presentation.""An off-site presentation in the unde

  • Chapter 19 The Boardroom Leak

Chaos broke out in the executive suite at eight in the morning.Evelyn slammed her tablet onto the glass desk, her jaw set tight. "The Hayes Group just filed a patent claim in the capital. It matches our new high-density battery design word for word."Her legal team stood in a neat line, heads bowed. Nobody wanted to meet her gaze. Three months of research went down the drain overnight. If Julian Hayes secured that patent, Sterling Enterprises lost its entire edge in the regional market."Who had access to the main schematic files?" Evelyn asked. Her voice carried a sharp edge."Only four senior directors," Vice President Marcus Vance said, stepping forward. He checked his gold watch. "Plus the internal server team. We are running an internal check right now, Miss Sterling. These things take time. It could take days to track the digital footprint."I stood behind Evelyn's leather chair, wearing my usual dark suit. My hands rested behind my back. I kept my expression blank."Days?" Eve

  • Chapter 18 Growing Suspicion

The quiet hum of the executive elevator felt heavy as we descended toward the underground parking garage. Evelyn stood beside me, her arms crossed tight against her chest, her sharp eyes fixed on the reflective steel doors. She had been silent since we left the executive suite. That was never a good sign.Usually, she barked orders or reviewed financial reports on her tablet. Today, she just stared."You handled those men back at the harbor very quickly," she said, breaking the silence without looking at me."They were sloppy," I replied, keeping my voice flat and casual. "Street thugs usually rely on noise rather than actual technique. A little pressure on the right joints goes a long way.""Right. Simple pressure." Her tone dripped with mild sarcasm. "And I suppose the city code inspector's sudden change of heart was just poor stress management on his part?"I offered a small, dismissive shrug. "Some people break under the weight of their own dirty laundry. Anyway, we should get you

  • Chapter 17 Shadow Execution

The subterranean garage beneath Sterling Tower smelled of damp concrete, old motor oil, and impending trouble. Overhead, a broken fluorescent tube flickered with a low buzzing sound, throwing twitchy shadows over rows of parked luxury sedans. It was past ten at night. The corporate offices upstairs were empty, but the underground bay felt far too crowded.Evelyn Sterling walked fast, her designer heels echoing sharp against the polished floor. She kept her leather handbag tucked tight under her arm."We need to move faster, Lucas," she said, her voice tight with stress. "The board meeting ran late, and Julian was far too quiet during the financial report. I do not like it when he stays quiet."I walked two paces behind her, keeping my jacket buttoned and my eyes scanning the dark corners. "I agree with you about the quiet part. By the way, stop right where you are."She froze mid-step, her hand hovering two inches above her car door handle. "What is it?""We have company," I said soft

  • Chapter 16 The Assassination Attempt

Rain pounded the concrete outside, but down in the sub-basement parking garage, the air tasted like stale oil and cold damp dust.I stood beside the rear door of Evelyn’s armored Mercedes sedan, holding it open as she slid onto the leather seat. She dropped her briefcase on the cushion next to her and pinched the bridge of her nose. Her face looked pale under the flickering fluorescent tubes overhead."Long meeting," she murmured, leaning her head back. "Julian's lawyers are getting desperate. They know the debt buyout is coming.""Let them sweat," I said, shutting her door with a solid thud.Anyway, desperate people make sloppy choices. I walked around to the driver's side and got behind the wheel.I put the key into the ignition and cranked engine. The V8 engine hummed softly in the cavernous space. I adjusted my rearview mirror, catching a glimpse of Evelyn closing her eyes. She thought the day's danger was over because the corporate suits had packed up their briefcases and left th

  • Chapter 15 Escalation

So, the Hundred Million Dollar cash bump in Evelyn's corporate account blew out Julian's forced takeover deal overnight. He didn't take it well.By noon, reports hit my earbud. Julian was pacing his penthouse, smashing glass tumblers against his high-end art collection. He knew someone was running interference. Someone big. Someone pulling global money strings to shield Sterling Enterprises.Naturally, his arrogant brain never pointed the finger at the guy wearing a thirty-dollar dark tie standing behind Evelyn's desk."He's panicking," Ghost whispered over the comms. I heard the soft click of his keyboard as he tracked the digital fallout. "The Hayes Group board is threatening to pull his chairman seat if he can't secure Evelyn's patents by Friday. He thinks an international hedge fund is backing her.""Let him guess," I replied quietly.I adjusted my cuff links while standing near the window of Evelyn's executive office. Down on the coastal streets, River City moved like a well-oile
