The engine outside roared once.

Then silence.

I moved toward the window.

The street was empty.

Whoever had been outside was gone.

Sophia came up behind me.

“Adrian.”

I turned.

“You knew.”

She shook her head.

“Not everything.”

“But enough.”

Her eyes dropped.

“I knew your father wanted you to disappear.”

“Why?”

“Because he believed someone inside the family was planning to kill you.”

“Who?”

“I don’t know.”

“You keep saying that.”

“Because it’s the truth.”

I stared at her.

Three years ago, I would have trusted every word she said.

Now, trust was something I couldn’t afford.

I walked back to the table and picked up my grandfather’s letter.

“Where is my father?”

Sophia hesitated.

“I don’t know.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“He disappeared two years ago.”

My eyes narrowed.

“What?”

“Your father left the country.”

“Why wasn’t I told?”

“You were presumed dead.”

“I was still his son.”

“He thought keeping you dead was the only way to keep you alive.”

I laughed bitterly.

“That sounds convenient.”

Sophia stepped closer.

“Adrian, listen to me.”

“No.”

She stopped.

“You don’t get to tell me what to believe anymore.”

“I know.”

“Then tell me everything.”

She nodded.

“Your father discovered financial transfers between Vale International and several shell companies.”

“Black Wolf?”

“Some of them.”

“Who controlled the accounts?”

“We never found out.”

I looked at the photograph of my grandfather.

“And my grandfather?”

“Your father believed he was behind it.”

“Why?”

“Because the transfers began shortly before your grandfather supposedly died.”

I frowned.

“How much money?”

Sophia looked at me.

“Four hundred million dollars.”

My expression hardened.

“Four hundred million?”

“Over eighteen months.”

“Where did it go?”

“We don’t know.”

I paced across the room.

Four hundred million dollars had disappeared from my family’s company.

And when I had been framed for stealing forty million, nobody had looked at the larger theft.

Someone had needed a scapegoat.

Me.

Suddenly, everything became clearer.

My suspension.

The accusations.

The board vote.

My father’s anger.

Marcus’s testimony.

Sophia’s disappearance.

The accident.

It had all been connected.

But there was still one question.

“Why did my father let the world believe I was dead?”

Sophia answered quietly.

“Because whoever was behind the scheme had people everywhere.”

“People inside Vale International?”

“Inside Vale International. Inside the police. Maybe even inside the government.”

I looked at her sharply.

“How far does this go?”

“I don’t know.”

A loud crash came from downstairs.

Sophia jumped.

I immediately moved toward the door.

“Stay here.”

“No.”

“Sophia.”

“I’m coming.”

We moved downstairs together.

The front door was still locked.

But the living room window was shattered.

Glass covered the floor.

I walked toward it carefully.

There was something lying beneath the window.

A USB drive.

I picked it up.

A message was written on it.

FOR ADRIAN VALE.

My pulse quickened.

I took out my phone.

“Don’t plug that into anything,” Sophia said.

“I won’t.”

I called Noah.

He answered immediately.

“Adrian?”

“Get to a secure location.”

“What happened?”

“I found a USB drive.”

“Don’t open it.”

“That’s why I’m calling you.”

He understood.

“I’ll bring an isolated system.”

“Good.”

I ended the call.

Then I noticed something else.

A small red mark on the floor.

Blood.

Someone had been injured.

I followed the drops toward the broken window.

They stopped at the garden.

I stepped outside.

The trail continued toward the gate.

Then disappeared.

Whoever had been here had escaped.

But not before leaving the USB.

That meant the drive was intentional.

Someone wanted me to find it.

The question was why.

⸻

Two hours later, Noah arrived at one of my private offices.

The building was empty.

No employees.

No cameras connected to the main network.

Perfect.

Noah placed the USB into an isolated computer.

“I’ll open it.”

The screen went black.

Then a video appeared.

My father was sitting behind a desk.

I froze.

He looked older.

Tired.

Afraid.

I had never seen my father look afraid.

The recording began.

“If you’re watching this, Adrian, then I’m already gone.”

My chest tightened.

My father continued.

“I know you will hate me.”

I whispered, “I already did.”

He looked directly into the camera.

“I let the world believe you were dead because there was no other way.”

Sophia stood beside me.

My father’s voice continued.

“The person who destroyed your life wasn’t Marcus.”

My eyes widened.

“It wasn’t Victor either.”

The video paused.

Then resumed.

“It was someone you trusted more than anyone.”

The screen went black.

A timer appeared.

Noah jumped toward the computer.

“It’s encrypted.”

“Stop it.”

“I can’t.”

I grabbed the power cable.

Noah shouted, “Don’t!”

I pulled it.

The screen died.

Silence.

Then Noah looked at me.

“That wasn’t a normal video.”

“What was it?”

“A trigger file.”

“For what?”

He stared at the dead screen.

“Something was supposed to happen when the countdown reached zero.”

Sophia’s face went pale.

“What?”

Noah looked at her.

“I don’t know.”

My phone vibrated.

A message.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

YOU SHOULD HAVE LET THE VIDEO FINISH.

Another message arrived.

NOW YOU’LL NEVER KNOW WHO YOUR FATHER WAS PROTECTING YOU FROM.

I stared at the screen.

Then a third message appeared.

COME TO VALE TOWER ALONE TOMORROW.

Underneath it was an address.

And one final sentence.

BRING THE 26%.

I looked at Noah.

He understood immediately.

“They know about your shares.”

I nodded.

“They know everything.”

Sophia stepped closer.

“Adrian, don’t go.”

I looked at her.

“They’ve spent three years hiding from me.”

I picked up my coat.

“Now they’re asking me to walk into their trap.”

Noah stood.

“Then I’m coming.”

“No.”

“Adrian—”

“If they expect me to bring an army, they’ll disappear.”

I looked at the message again.

“I’ll go alone.”

Sophia grabbed my arm.

“You could die.”

I looked into her eyes.

“They already killed Adrian Vale once.”

I pulled my arm free.

“They’re about to learn that mistake was expensive.”

Outside, thunder rolled across the city.

And somewhere inside Vale Tower, someone was waiting for me.

  • THE PROMISE TO THE BABY IN THE THIRD CRIB

I stared at Ethan’s photograph until the screen dimmed. His hands were tied behind a chair. Blood marked his lower lip, and a bruise darkened his cheekbone. Behind him, Gabriel Vale stood with one hand resting on the chair. The woman beside Gabriel had her face scratched out.But I recognized her coat.It was the same dark coat Eleanor Voss had worn at the chapel.I looked up.“Where is Eleanor Voss?”Eleanor Vale, the woman who had raised me, frowned.“Why are you asking me?”“Because this woman is wearing her coat.”She studied the photograph.“That isn’t Eleanor Voss.”“How can you be certain?”“Because Eleanor Voss has a scar on her left hand. This woman’s hands are visible.”I enlarged the image. The woman’s fingers were bare.No scar.No ring.Nothing that could establish her identity.“Then who is she?” Sophia asked.Eleanor shook her head.“I don’t know.”I looked at the clock.11:08 p.m.Gabriel wanted the original security ring at midnight. He had Ethan, and he had made it c

  • THE WOMAN STANDING BESIDE US

The lullaby drifted through the darkness.Three will be born, and three return soon.I raised my weapon toward the sound.“Whoever you are, show yourself!”The singing stopped. Then a woman’s voice answered.“Adrian, put the gun down.”My blood ran cold.I knew that voice.I had heard it in childhood memories, in nightmares, and in the few recordings of my mother I had managed to recover.“Mother?”Ethan grabbed my arm.“Don’t move.”The emergency lights flickered on, bathing the vault in a dim red glow.Gabriel Vale was gone. The steel door remained sealed, and the computer terminal had shut down. Only the old security ring on my finger and the file displayed moments earlier remained in my thoughts. Then someone stepped from between the cabinets.A woman in a dark coat. Her hair was streaked with gray. Her face was thinner than the woman in my memories, but her eyes were unmistakable.Eleanor Vale. The woman who had raised me.The woman who had told me she was my aunt. The woman whos

  • THE SISTER WITH SOPHIA’S NAME

For several seconds, nobody spoke. The name on my phone seemed to burn into my mind.SOPHIA BENNETT.I looked at the woman standing beside me.Sophia had read the message over my shoulder. Her lips parted, but no sound came out. Then she shook her head.“No.”I gripped the phone.“Tell me you know nothing about this.”“I don’t know anything about it, Adrian.”“Your father protected the third child. His letter was addressed to Ethan. Eleanor gave us a key bearing your initials. Now a dying doctor says the missing child’s name is yours.”“I’m telling you the truth!”Her voice cracked.I wanted to believe her. God knew I wanted to believe her.But my entire life had been destroyed by people who had looked me in the eye and sworn they were telling the truth.I had learned that love didn’t make someone innocent. And a familiar face didn’t make someone trustworthy.Ethan stepped between us.“Stop.”I turned toward him.“Stay out of this.”“No. We’re not going to repeat what our families did

  • THE MAN WHO REMEMBERED THE NURSERY

The bullet tore through the lock.“DOWN!” I shouted.Sophia dropped behind the desk as the door burst open.A man in a black tactical jacket entered with his weapon raised. His face was hidden behind a dark mask, but his movements were familiar. He scanned the room, found me, and fired.I threw myself behind a bookcase. The bullet shattered a framed photograph.“Who sent you?” I shouted. He didn’t answer. He advanced toward the desk.I moved before he reached Sophia.I slammed into him from the side, driving his weapon arm against the wall. The gun discharged, deafening us in the confined room.He struck me across the face with his elbow.Pain exploded along my jaw.I retaliated with a punch to his ribs, but he twisted free and reached for a second weapon.I kicked it from his hand.We crashed against the desk, scattering Richard Bennett’s letters across the floor. The man was strong, trained, and determined. But he made one mistake. He kept trying to reach the blue box.I drove my sh

  • THE NAME INSIDE THE BLUE BOX

“Ethan Vale?”I stared at Sophia. She nodded, her face drained of color.“My father’s letter was addressed to Ethan. Not you. Not me. Ethan.”“That doesn’t make sense. Your father died years before Ethan and I discovered each other.”“I know.”“Then how could he have known Ethan existed?”Sophia shook her head. “I don’t know, Adrian. That’s why we need to find that letter.”Outside the vehicle, Noah glanced at us through the rearview mirror.“Where are we going?”“Bennett House,” Sophia answered. “My father’s old residence.”Noah’s expression changed.“That’s been abandoned for years.”“Not completely,” she said. “The property is maintained by a caretaker. My father insisted that the house and everything inside it remain untouched.”“Why didn’t you tell me about this before?” I asked.Sophia turned toward me.“Because I didn’t know the letter existed until Eleanor mentioned it. My father died when I was young. Afterward, my aunt handled his estate. She told me there were old business

  • THE SISTER THEY ERASED

YOUR SISTER IS ALIVE.I read the words again. Then I enlarged the photograph on my phone.Eleanor Voss stood outside a hospital entrance, twenty years younger, her dark hair falling across one shoulder. She held a newborn wrapped in a white blanket. The date stamped beneath the image matched the night my mother had given birth. But it wasn’t the date that frightened me.It was the hospital bracelet around the baby’s wrist.I could barely make out the writing, but one word was clear.VALE.“Adrian!”Noah’s voice pulled me back to the present.Bullets were striking the wall behind us. Marcus was barely conscious, and the attackers were closing in.I shoved the phone into my pocket.“Get Marcus into the vehicle!”Noah grabbed Marcus’s other arm. Together, we dragged him toward the drainage path while Ethan’s voice crackled through my earpiece.“Where are you?”“Under attack at the old service station. Marcus is wounded.”“I’m coming.”“No! Stay with Sophia.”“Adrian—”“That’s an order, E
