Having witnessed something similar that same day - people bowing to him, Nicolas was more surprised by Nora's abilities. Though he was a man, he knew that if he had been faced with that many men, they would have beaten him to a pulp and he wouldn't have been able to protect Natalie.

But then, considering her status in the Belford family, she must have undergone rigorous training. He was coming to understand that a servant in the Belford family like she introduced herself the first time was not your regular servant. This one was expertly trained and sophisticated.

He was grateful to her. He also understood that the so-called Iron vultures or whatever their name was nothing compared to the power and authority of the Belford family which didn't surprise Nicolas much. Even their name sounded like a joke.

Nora turned to Nicolas. “Should I deal with them, master?”

Nicolas turned to Nora, confused at first. He hadn't expected that she'd seek his opinion or permission.

Nicolas turned to Ivan, Ben and their men. He glanced back at Natalie. “For now, leave them be. They aren't worth it."

Ivan began to weep. "Thank you-”

“But if Natalie should get affected by whatever you fed her,” Nicolas held Ivan's gaze, “I won't spare any of you.”

Ivan swallowed, then he forced out, "Thank you, master."

“Let's get out of here," Nicolas said to Nora and Nora led the way. The people stood aside to make way for them.

Even after the door closed, everyone remained silent and on their knees.

Until the revv of the engine was gone, Ivan remained on his knees, his face burning with extreme embarrassment.

“Bro! Why are we still on our knees?" Ben brome the perfect silence.

Ivan ignored him. He had just wanted to quietly slip out of there, but his arrogant and dumb brother was making it hard as he spoke again.

“Ivan, who were those people? Why did you-”

Ivan didn't allow Ben to finish his questions when he blindly turned to him and connected his palm with his cheeks. “Shut the fuck up, you stupid boy."

Ben's eyes watered but he still glared at his brother, palming his cheeks. “What was that for?"

“If it weren't for the master's mercy, we'd have all been tossed into an ocean for sharks to feed on!”

There were murmurs all around.

"Quiet!" Ivan yelled and the room grew silent again.

Ben scoffed. “What do you mean? Why do you keep saying master?”

Ivan ignored him as he issued a warning. "From this day onward, whenever any of you see that man, if you still wish to be alive, treat him with utmost respect!”

Nora parked the car before a top tier hotel.

Confused, Nicolas turned to her. “Why have we stopped here?”

Nora hid a smile. “It's okay boss. I understand.”

Nicolas frowned. “Understand what?”

Nora was finding it harder to hide her smile. "I understand that you might not feel comfortable with her at the estate,” she answered and climbed out of the car.

Nicolas blinked, trying to understand what she meant.

“Here, let me help her out,” Nora muttered as she opened the back door and helped a snoring Natalie out.

Nicolas stepped out and took him from her. “Thank you,” he muttered.

“Anything for you, master.” Nora reached into her pocket and provided a blank bank card. He handed it over to Nicolas who took it skeptically.

“What is this for?”

Nora briefly wiggled her brows, a teasing smile on her lips. “With that, you can pick any room of your choice, no matter its cost.”

It finally clicked for Nicolas. He immediately shook his head.

“Oh no. It's not what you think.” It was on the tip of his tongue to mention that Natalie was his wife's sister, but Nora was dead set on her conclusion.

“Make sure you get a comfortable suite, master,” she smirked. “One she'd like.” She nodded at Natalie. "She looks like she has exquisite taste."

Nicolas sighed. "Nora, look, you've misunderstood the whole thing.”

Nora gave Nicolas a knowing look. “If you say I have, then I have, master. If you need me, I'm only a phone call away. But I will not interrupt your wonderful night.”

“Nora!”

With a teasing smirk, she saluted, got in the car and drove off, but not before flashing him another smile.

Left with no choice, Nicolas supported Natalie and led them into the hotel lobby.

Once in a while, Natalie's eyes would crack open and she'd murmur, “where are we?” And she'd close her eyes before she could get a response.

Nicolas stopped at the front desk. He was about to provide the card when the receptionist frowned and looked at him from head to toes.

“All standard rooms are fully booked and we're not accepting new guests,” she said dismissively.

Nicolas placed the card on the counter before her. “Can I stay in a suite instead? Those can't be fully booked.”

The receptionist did the once over thing again. She briefly felt bad for the young lady in his arms. Why did she choose to go with such a poor man?

She scoffed. “You? A suite?” She looked at him again. She arched her brows. “Do you even know that our suites cost $9,999 a night?"

Nicolas frowned. Why won't she just check the card he's dropped? That wouldn't be a hassle, would it? He just wanted to settle Natalie in as soon as possible and give her whatever home treatment he could, but the lady was making it difficult.

“Just check the card. I wouldn't be here if I didn't have enough."

He was certain that Nora wouldn't have lied to him. Though they've just met, he trusts her. She's proven her loyalty.

The receptionist let out a frustrated sigh. She picked up the card, but instead of checking, she flung it aside with a haughty laugh. She shook her head. "You really think you can waltz in here with some worthless card and pull a scam?”

  • CHAPTER 137

After destroying his family and taking full control of everything they owned, the male lead’s life changed completely. He became the head of a vast business empire. The Belford family that once looked down on him, was gone now and so every company, estate, and asset they once controlled was now under his name. He rebuilt their empire with his own principles replacing corruption and deceit. His public image boomed overnight. The media called him a “self-made heir,” but few understood the blood and loss that came with that title. Investors sought his attention. He led board meetings commanding absolute obedience. Employees respected him. He continued to live in the family’s main mansion, though it was no longer recognizable. The halls were transformed to suite his taste. Expensive art replaced family portraits, modern furniture stood where old relics once gathered dust, and wide glass windows replaced the heavy curtains. This was his way of reclaiming not just a house, but his peace.Fin

  • CHAPTER 136

They weren't able to save Nora. Even though Nicholas had rushed her to the nearest hospital the instant he was out of his handcuffs, it still wasn't enough to save her. In the end, he could only arrange for her to get a funeral befitting a person as great as her. She might have betrayed him due to allegiances she held long before they met, but in her final moments, she had saved him. He would be a fool not to respect that.Afterwards, he returned to Benedict's place first. He had something to tell the man, anyway, so he figured that he might as well return the borrowed goons in person. What he didn't expect was to be surrounded by armed men as soon as he stepped into the house. Benedict descended the stairs to meet him, his expression filled with icy rage."So," he said. "You managed to survive.""Let me guess," Nicholas replied. "You were hoping otherwise?""I thought you would have the good sense to meet your death there. You have no place in the Belford family, and you certainly do

  • CHAPTER 135

Natalie's life was in Jerome's hands, which was the only reason Nicholas allowed himself and Kabuto to be handcuffed and taken to a room upstairs. He and Kabuto were forced to kneel while Jerome sprawled on a chair like it was his throne, looking pleased with himself. Behind him stood Nora. This time, she was the one pressing the gun to Natalie's temple. Natalie's hands and feet were bound, her mouth gagged. She blinked furiously, trying to hold back tears. She couldn't let herself cry. She had to be strong, for Nicholas."So," Jerome said, "I don't believe we've been properly introduced, Nicholas Belford.""Cut the act, 'Belling de Nor'," Nicholas snarled. "What the hell do you want?"Jerome chuckled."So you figured it out," he said. "And here I thought my disguise was perfect. Oh, well. It's not like knowing that is going to help you now.""You must love the sound of your own voice," Nicholas said. "Seeing as you said everything but the answer to my question."Jerome rolled his eye

  • CHAPTER 134

"How do you win a game you don't know the rules of?" Nicholas mumbled.Harold's eyebrows lifted. "Pardon?"Nicholas looked up, startled. He hadn't meant to say that out loud. He returned his gaze to the chessboard sitting on the table between them. It was his move, but he had been so occupied with his thoughts that he barely noticed."Jerome," he clarified. "Trying to beat him is like playing a game. Except that he knows the rules, and sees the whole board. And I don't.""You don't know his identity," Harold agreed. "But he knows yours. His spy has been by your side all this time, but you don't even know what he's thinking. Indeed, you are at a disadvantage.""So how do I win?" Nicholas asked."By paying attention to the board," Harold replied. "And keeping your eyes on the players. Take Jerome, for example. What do you know about him?""That he leads the second faction," Nicholas said. "And he was controlling the proprietress, before she died.""So he was raised in the orphanage," Ha

  • CHAPTER 133

"There are two factions that call the shots at Familia," Harold began. "I'm sure that by now you've figured out that Familia isn't just an orphanage. It's an organization. One more of the many run by the Belford family.""I'm aware of that," Nicholas confirmed. "It seems farfetched, though, that there would be factions tussling over an orphanage. Organization or not.""The orphanage was one of the patriarch's greatest gold mines," Harold said. "It's one thing to hire goons. It's an entirely different thing to raise them. Nurture them. What's going on in that place isn't just training. It's architecture. Those children are being constructed into weapons. You've met them, haven't you? What was your impression?"Nicholas thought of them. Of those teenagers slinging guns like war veterans, their eyes devoid of any emotion."If they are raised to adulthood like that," he said, "they would be an unstoppable army.""Exactly," Harold replied. "And who wouldn't want control over that unstoppab

  • CHAPTER 132

There were many things that Nicholas had to take in at once.Harold knew that they was there. And he wanted them to join him at his table. And this girl had called him her uncle. It was a lot of unpack. He looked up at the girl, searching for some proof of deceit, but the genuineness in her expression wasn't faked. Whatever Harold was planning, it didn't involve this girl. She probably thought she was inviting her uncle's friends over or something.Nora glanced at Nicholas, silently asking what they should do. Nicholas shrugged and stood up."That's nice of your uncle. Let's go, Nora," he said. The girl beamed."He's right over there," she said, leading the way. They got to the table, and Harold had the nerve to smile at them. As if they were all old friends or something. Nicholas was tempted to tell him how creepy a cheerful expression looked on him."It's good to see you," Harold said. "Nicholas. Nora."Beside him, Nicholas felt Nora shift uncomfortably. How come Harold knew her nam
