Rain had begun to fall in the courtyard.

It came softly out of a black sky, in a thin steady veil. Torches burned in iron brackets along the colonnade. The flagstones glistened. In the center of the yard, a wide circle of pale stone had been laid into the ground, marked with the five houses of the Court in worn carvings around its edge.

The elders gathered along the walls beneath the eaves. The Pillars stood in a row under a canopy at the far end. Ghost and the Pavilion's guards stood in a tight

Ghost moved before the echo of the last gate died.He was across the hall in three steps, with Alexander's chair behind him and his arms spread wide. His face was white and hard. "Dragon Head," he said in a low voice. "The Shadow Guard. They are my men.""Can you reach them?""I trained half of them." Ghost's jaw clenched. "I do not know how many still remember.""Then make them remember."Ghost looked at him for a moment. Then he nodded once and ran for the great doors. All around the hall, the crowd was in uproar. Elders clung to each other. The Pavilion's old guards, forty men with iron staffs, ran to form a line across the doors. Madam Wu and Daniel helped Alexander to his feet. Isabella stood motionless by the screen, still holding the empty flash drive in her fist.A deep grinding sound came from the far end of the hall. The great doors shuddered under a blow. Then another. The wood cracked."Back!" Ethan shouted. "Everyone against the walls!"The doors burst open.Men in black

The recording ended. For a moment, nothing moved. The screen went dark. Its soft glow died. The silver lamps flickered on the black stone table. In the hush, Ethan heard a woman begin to sob quietly on the benches. Somewhere in the back, a chair scraped. Then the hall exploded.Voices rose from every side. Elders leapt to their feet. Some shouted in anger. Others sat with their faces buried in their hands. Elder Chen stood with his stick raised and his white beard trembling, calling for order that nobody gave him. A heavy old woman in a gray shawl cried out that she had always known. A man near the front fell on his knees and began to pray."Silence," said the Dragon Head from the throne.Alexander's voice was weak and hoarse. It cut through the roar like a knife. The shouting faltered and died. Every face turned toward him."You have all heard it," Alexander said. "You know the voice. You know the faces. The Court has laws for this. I will not break them." He turned his gray eyes slo

For a long moment, Alexander Cross only looked at the ceiling. His eyes were hazy and slow. The blue had begun to fade from his lips, and a faint, uneven color was creeping back into his cheeks. He drew another long breath and let it out. His hand moved slowly against the stone floor and found his son's."Ethan," he whispered."I am here.""You are bleeding."Ethan looked down. He had not noticed. A thin line of red had crept from the corner of his mouth, and the cut over his eye had reopened. He wiped it with his sleeve and laughed in a short, shaky way. "You are the one who nearly died, Father.""I have been nearly dead for ten years." Alexander's voice was thin, but the old humor was in it. "I find it is a habit I can break. Though I will admit, it is a good deal more pleasant to wake up with my son's hand in mine."He tried to sit up. Madam Wu and Isabella caught him on either side and propped him against a table leg. He breathed carefully for a few moments. Then he looked around

Ethan did not remember crossing the courtyard. He remembered the rain on his face and the roar of the elders on both sides. He remembered Ghost's hand under his good arm and Isabella running ahead of him with her skirt held in both fists. His left arm hung like a dead branch. Every breath cut his ribs. The Template had left him, and with it went the calm clear strength. He was only a hurt man walking through the dark. The canopy at the far end of the courtyard shook in the wind. The Four Pillars stood beneath it, still and watchful. Augustus Sterling had his hands clasped behind his back. Lockwood was sweating. Leonard Hawthorne kept glancing at his daughter, then away, as if her face hurt him. Julian Sterling leaned against a post with his arms folded and his smile gone thin and stiff.Madam Draven stood in the middle of them, straight as a blade.Ethan stopped in front of her. The rain dripped off his hair into his eyes. He wiped it away with the back of his good hand."The champion

Isabella was among them with her arms wrapped around herself.Master Han waited in the center of the circle, barefoot, with his hands loose at his sides. Rain ran down his white hair and the lines of his face. He did not seem to feel it.Ethan stepped into the ring. The stone was cold under his feet. He had taken off his shoes. He rolled back his sleeves."You are the heir," Master Han said. His voice was deep and unhurried. It carried clearly through the rain

Ethan stood at the head of the banquet hall with his father's body at his feet.Every eye was on him. A thousand candle flames stood bent toward him as if drawn by a hand. The elders of the lesser houses had risen from their seats. A few of them were pale. Some had backed away from the tables. In the sudden silence, Ethan could hear the thin ragged sound of Alexander's breathing."Julian Sterling," he said. His voice was not loud. It did not need to be.Julian lowered his glass slowly. "Yes, Mr. Cross?""Give me the antidote.""I do not know what you mean.""Left inside pocket. Glass vial. Pale blue liquid." Ethan walked slowly down the center of the hall between the tables. His footsteps rang on the black stone. "Hand it over, and I will let you leave this Pavilion alive."A thin smile curled the corner of Julian's mouth. "Such dramatic language. Father, did you hear that? He believes I am carrying a cure. But what proof does he have? Nothing.""The proof is in your pocket.""The law
