CHAPTER 17
The smile on Seraphine's face wasn't hers. Adrian knew. He had seen her angry, cold, suspicious, frightened-but never like this. The smile held recognition with no warmth to counter it.Her silver eyes met his, and something in his blood responded. Not fear. Not desire.Recognition.Dragon Sight bloomed in his mind, golden, and Seraphine's body became almost transparent in his vision, three currents of energy flowing inside of her. Silver around her heart, gold in her blood-and a third, black current that didn't belong to her at all, that coiled behind her, occupying space."Seraphine," he said. She tilted her head. The smile on her face widened."Adrian." His own voice echoed back at him.Vaelric raised his weapon. "Don't let it finish.""Wait." Adrian held up a hand."What are you doing?""Watching."The entity wearing Seraphine took a step closer. "You're learning.""Learning what?""How to see."The words froze something in his chest. No one had taught him how to see Dragon Sight
CHAPTER 16
Every lock clicked simultaneously.Click. Click. Click.Adrian did not move. Neither did Seraphine. Vaelric paused a handful of feet away, his expression unreadable - but Adrian knew Vaelric well enough to know that he was trying not to be surprised by this turn of events. Surprise was not something Vaelric was good at hiding.Adrian turned to Seraphine. "What do you remember?"For a long moment, she did not answer. Her fingers twitched - not in apprehension, but in the tight restraint of a woman holding something against her will. Then she turned to Vaelric. "I remember a door.""What kind of door?" Vaelric's mouth tightened. "Tell me what kind of door.""You already know."Adrian sighed. "Enough. Tell me why Seraphine remembers you taking me.""I didn't take you," Vaelric said flatly.Seraphine gasped and another memory surged forward, forcing her to grip the edge of a cabinet for support. Adrian caught her before she could collapse."Seraphine," he murmured. She looked at him, her
CHAPTER 15
A memory bloomed around him, the sensation of a door swinging to reveal white light.White walls, cold overhead lights, metal restraints bolted to a table, and a child's wails from beyond the glass.Seraphine stood in the center of the room, smaller than he remembered, six years old maybe, less, her silver eyes wide with something akin to terror. Her mother stood across from her, her face instantly recognizable to Adrian, though she wasn't watching the child, but him"You're late,"Adrian froze solid.Seraphine turned to him, "Did she just-""Yes,"The woman crouched to fasten a small silver pendant around her daughter's neck, "Listen carefully. If they ever bring you to the Dragon heir," here a shadow crossed the glass, "Do not let him remember you."Adrian felt his heart pound in his chest,"Why?" Seraphine asked, and he had no answer because it was his question as well."If he remembers what happened in this room," her mother warned, "The prison will recognize him."Metal screeched
CHAPTER 14
The laughter under the Sterling Tower fell silent.Adrian didn't breathe as the system's message appeared on his vision.[SECOND DRAVARYN SIGNATURE: DETECTED.] [SIGNATURE ORIGIN: ADRIAN VALE - FUTURE.]It was gone. Vanished. As if someone had brushed it away.Seraphine was giving him a look. "What did it say?"He didn't immediately answer. Vaelric had his attention fixed on him too tightly, and it made Adrian uneasy."You saw it," Adrian reminded him"No.""You're lying again.""I saw your face."Vaelric's expression didn't give anything away, but the grip of his weapon had tightened in his hand, not in surprise but in fear."You know what it means.""I know what it could mean.""Then tell me.""No.""Why?""Because if I'm right, knowing more just makes you easier to find.""Everyone seems to think that." Adrian took a step forward. "My mother erased my memory to keep me safe. Aleric buried me in this family to keep me safe. Orion picked us out before we were born." He looked at Vaelr
CHAPTER 13
"Son."The word broke the silence of the archive like a shattered bone.Adrian didn't move, nor did Seraphine, not even Vaelric but the latter's blade shot up and at her throat."Get away from her."Adrian's eyes locked onto Vaelric's. "You know that voice."Vaelric's jaw tightened. "No.""You're lying," Adrian said.Silver gleamed in Seraphine's eyes. Her body remained rigid but her mouth twitched into a strange, wrong curve. "You always were quick, Vaelric."Vaelric's face paled and Adrian filed that away. Not merely familiar, but comfortable. He stepped forward. "Who are you?"Seraphine tilted her head, too slowly, as if remembering how to bend it."Your father."Too fast, too clean and Adrian used Dragon Sight and gold flooded his eyes, ignoring Seraphine's face as he saw the three layers of light bound to her body, silver the top layer and beneath it gold and beneath that, another darkness, curled like a fist. The voice said, "You have suffered because of me."Adrian didn't answe
CHAPTER 12
The archive floor split below them and Seraphine stumbled toward the gap. Adrian caught her arm before she fell and this time she did not pull awayBelow was darkness with no bottom. No walls he could find. A large circular shaft extended downward far farther than Dragon Sight could follow, and something was moving within it."That's not a tunnel," Seraphine said."No," Vaelric replied grimly. "It's a throat.""What?"He gestured to the shaft's edge, where rings of ancient metal lined the drop, each etched with thousands of symbols, some Dravaryn, some Adrian had never seen in his life. Every few seconds the rings constricted, tightening like lungs.Adrian's stomach twisted. Whatever was beneath Veyrith was not only imprisoned there, the entire city had been built atop it like a lid.THUMM. The archive shook. Cabinets tipped over behind them."My mother is down there," Seraphine said."That voice may not be your mother's.""I know." She met his eyes, steady despite everything. "But if
