The black water in the drain smelled like old soap, dead moss, and cold rot.
Chen Lan splashed hard into the warm muck of the sewer, his boots sinking deep into the slime. He coughed, the thick steam burning his throat. He reached up with his right hand, wiping the grey grease from his forehead. His white hair stuck to his temples like wet silk. Beside him, Ruo Xi dropped from the iron chute with a soft splash, landing perfectly on her feet. "Are you still with me?" she asked, her voice echoing off the curved brick walls. "I am breathing," Chen Lan said, his voice sounding dry and old. "But my left arm is completely dead. I cannot feel the fingers." "You do not need your fingers to stand," Ruo Xi said, pulling a brass lantern from her pack. She struck a flint, and a tiny yellow flame lit up the damp tunnel. "The main treasury wall is just ahead. The map says the stone gets thinner near the pool vents." "How thin?" Chen Lan asked, his boots squelching as he followed her. "Thin enough for us to squeeze through," she said, pointing to a rusty iron grate at the end of the line. "But we have to be quiet. The guards above can hear the water if we make too much noise." They crept toward the iron grate, their bodies bent double under the low ceiling. The heat from the royal baths above dripped down in fat, greasy drops that stung Chen Lan's skin. He could feel the low hum of the palace magic vibrating through the wet brickwork. It made his golden eye throb with a dull, blue ache. "Stop," Ruo Xi whispered, holding up her hand. "What is it?" Chen Lan asked, leaning his weight against the wall. "Listen," she said, tilting her head. A low, rhythmic scraping sound came from the other side of the grate. It sounded like metal sliding over stone. Then, a sharp click echoed through the dark. "Someone is already inside the vault," Chen Lan whispered, his heart hammering against his ribs. "No," Ruo Xi said, her eyes narrowing in the lantern light. "That is the sound of the locks turning. They are shifting the treasures. The Inquisitors are clearing the room." "Then we are too late," Chen Lan said, his head dropping. "We are not too late," Ruo Xi hissed, pulling her silver dagger from her belt. She jammed the blade between the rusty bars of the grate and pried with all her strength. "The metal is old. Help me, Chen Lan." Chen Lan placed his human hand on the iron bar, his muscles screaming as he pulled. With a loud, wet crack, the brickwork around the grate crumbled, and the heavy iron frame fell forward into the dark vault beyond. They scrambled through the gap, rolling onto a polished white marble floor. The vault was massive, but it was not empty. Huge wooden crates lined the walls, and several iron chests lay open on the floor, their velvet linings bare. In the center of the room, on a tall pedestal of blue stone, sat a long, thin wooden box bound in silver wire. "The Silent Blade," Ruo Xi gasped, her boots tapping quickly across the marble. "Wait," Chen Lan called out, his dragon eye flaring with a sudden, warning heat. "Ruo Xi, look at the floor." Directly in front of the pedestal, the marble was carved with deep, swirling lines that formed the shape of a sleeping serpent. The grooves were filled with a dark, silver liquid that seemed to rise and fall like a slow breath. "The third lock," Ruo Xi said, stopping an inch from the silver line. "If we step on that, the alarm will ring across the entire palace." "Where is the key slot?" Chen Lan asked, his eyes scanning the room. "There," she said, pointing to a small brass pillar near the back wall. "But the central slot is on the other side of the room. We cannot reach both without crossing the silver lines." "Then we do not cross them," Chen Lan said. He stepped forward, his boots sliding on the slick stone. "I will use the fire to melt the silver. It will break the link." "You cannot use your fire again," Ruo Xi said, grabbing his sling. "Look at your hair, Chen Lan. Look at your skin. One more strike and your heart will stop for good." "We do not have three minutes, Ruo Xi," Chen Lan said, his voice calm. "We have seconds. Look at the door." At the far end of the vault, the massive bronze doors were slowly grinding open. A thin sliver of yellow light from the palace corridor began to cut through the darkness of the treasury. "They are coming," Ruo Xi whispered, her knuckles turning white. "Give me the sphere," Chen Lan said, reaching out his human hand. "No," she said, backing away. "There has to be another way." "There is no other way," Chen Lan said, his golden eye burning with a bright, steady light. "I am already dead if we do not get that blade. Give me the key, Ruo Xi." She looked at him, her eyes bright with unshed tears, before sliding the brass sphere into his palm. "If you die, I am going to leave your body here for the rats." "I would expect nothing less," Chen Lan said with a dry laugh. He turned toward the brass pillar, his legs shaking with every step. The silver liquid on the floor began to ripple, a high, whistling sound filling the vault as the magic reacted to his presence. He felt the coldness in his chest expand, a dark ice creeping toward his throat. "Long Ye," Chen Lan whispered into the dark of his mind. "Just one more time." A spark of blue flame ignited at the tip of his scaled fingers, running up his arm like a wild snake. He did not aim for the silver lines on the floor. Instead, he lunged forward, slamming his burning fist directly into the center of the brass pillar. The metal exploded in a shower of hot sparks. At the same instant, the silver liquid on the floor turned black, the high whistle dying into a flat, empty silence. The silver wire around the wooden box on the pedestal snapped with a sharp ping, and the lid flew open, revealing a long, slender dagger made of pure, transparent crystal. "I have it!" Ruo Xi yelled, snatching the blade from the velvet lining. "Chen Lan!" she screamed, turning back to him. Chen Lan was on his knees, his forehead pressed against the cold stone. His hair was completely white now, his skin grey and thin as paper. He did not move. He did not breathe. "Get up!" Ruo Xi ran to his side, throwing her daggers onto the floor and pulling his head up. "The blade is here! Touch it!" She pressed the cold crystal hilt into his scaled hand, but his fingers remained loose, the hand sliding away onto the marble. "Do not do this," Ruo Xi whispered, her voice cracking as the heavy bronze doors behind them swung fully open, revealing three silver-armored Inquisitors with their swords drawn. "Stop right there, thieves!" the lead Inquisitor shouted, his voice echoing off the high stone ceiling. Ruo Xi did not look back. She gripped the crystal blade with her own hand, pressing it hard against Chen Lan's chest, right over his silent heart. "Please," she whispered.Latest Chapter

The Merchant's Gate
A single guard stood between them and the path to the Emperor's palace. The rain fell in thin, icy needles, washing the soot from the cobblestones of the capital city. Chen Lan pulled his heavy hood low, trying to hide the shock of white hair that now framed his face. His left arm was wrapped tight in a plain cotton sling, but beneath the cloth, the scales were cold as winter stones. Beside him, Ruo Xi was pushing a wooden cart piled high with rotting cabbages, her head down and her face smeared with black grease."Keep your head down and do not look him in the eye," Ruo Xi whispered, her voice barely carrying over the rattle of the wooden wheels. "If he asks for your papers, let me do the talking.""My bones feel like glass, Ruo Xi," Chen Lan muttered back, his breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps. "The cold is getting into my chest.""Just five more yards," she hissed, her hands gripping the wooden handles of the cart. "Do not fall apart on me now.""Hold it right there," the guar
The Split-Second Leap
The cold wind screamed like a dying beast as the glider plunged into the empty sky.Chen Lan felt his stomach drop into his boots. The world was a spinning blur of grey ash, dark green treetops, and the brilliant orange fireball of the exploding airship above them. He clutched the wooden frame of the glider, his knuckles turning white. His left arm was completely numb, the black scales cold and lifeless against his side."Keep us level!" Chen Lan shouted over the roar of the wind."I am trying!" Ruo Xi yelled back, her hands white as she yanked on the wooden steering bars. "The wind is too strong! We are carrying too much weight!""We are falling too fast!" Chen Lan squinted through the rushing air. The canopy of the forest was rising to meet them like a green wall. "Pull up, Ruo Xi!""I cannot pull up any more!" she screamed, her face red from the effort. "The left wing is dipping! We are going down!""Hold on!" Chen Lan braced himself. The glider clipped the top of a giant pine tree
A Dance of Blades
The floor became a wall, and the wall became a slide to hell.Chen Lan slammed hard against the steel railing of the corridor as the massive airship groaned, tilting at a terrifying angle. Steam hissed from the pipes above, filling the narrow space with a thick, choking fog that smelled of sulfur and hot oil. Beside him, Ruo Xi was sliding down the metal deck, her boots squeaking against the polished floorboards as she struggled to find her footing."Grab my hand!" Chen Lan roared, his voice cracking from the heat in his throat. He reached out his right hand, his human hand, and caught her fingers just before she could slide into the dark gap of the stairwell. Her face was pale, and she clutched her satchel to her chest as if her life depended on it."Did you have to break the rudder?" Ruo Xi gasped, her feet dangling over the edge of the pit. "We are dropping like a stone!""It was either that or let Wei Lun turn us into pancakes," Chen Lan grunted, pulling her up with a hard yank. "
The Floating Fortress
The smell of expensive roasted duck, spiced wine, and perfumed ladies was almost enough to drown out the heavy stench of coal dust and engine grease.Chen Lan pulled the collar of his fine silk robe higher to hide his neck. The material was soft, but it felt like a noose. His left arm, tightly bound in thick white bandages beneath his wide sleeve, throbbed with a slow, agonizing heat. Beside him, Ruo Xi glided through the crowded ballroom of the massive military airship, a golden chalice of wine in her hand and a perfect, effortless smile on her face."Stop looking like you are about to vomit," Ruo Xi whispered, her smile never fading as she nodded politely to a passing officer. "You are supposed to be a wealthy merchant from the southern ports, not a criminal about to be hanged.""This silk is too tight," Chen Lan muttered back, his golden eye hidden beneath a tinted glass monocle she had forced him to wear. "And this ship is too high. If my dragon fails me now, we will drop ten thou
Into the Dead Vaults
The dust in the underground tunnel tasted of copper, sulfur, and old bones. Chen Lan kept his left hand hidden beneath his heavy dark cloak, his fingers lightly brushing the cold stone walls. Every time his palm touched the rock, a tiny spark of heat jumped from his black scales, leaving a faint, glowing orange smudge behind. It was the only light they had in the damp darkness."Can you turn that down?" Ruo Xi whispered from ahead, her boots making a soft squelching sound in the mud. "You are like a walking torch.""I am not doing it on purpose," Chen Lan muttered, his teeth clenching as a sharp cramp squeezed his chest. "The magic in these walls is pulling at my blood. It feels like gravity, but sharper.""That means we are close," Ruo Xi said, pausing at a heavy stone doorway covered in thick green moss. She pulled a brass scraping tool from her belt and began clearing the stone. "The ancient texts said the outer defense runes are carved right into the threshold. If a normal human s
