"If you move so much as a muscle, I will paint these rocks with your life."

The cold edge of a pitch black dagger pressed tightly against the warm skin of Chen Mo’s throat. Meng Yao stood close, her body a coiled spring of lethal intent, her grey eyes cutting through the swirling mountain fog. She was breathing too fast, her chest heaving beneath her dark armor, a strange, dark energy rippling wildly across her collarbone.

Chen Mo didn't flinch, even as a thin line of warmth trickled down his neck. "You just saved my life from Ge Xuan. Why kill me now?"

"Because you are a walking anomaly," she hissed, her hand trembling slightly against the hilt of her weapon. "That pulse I felt from the peak, it wasn't human. It wasn't even standard qi. What did you do to your body?"

"I survived," Chen Mo said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, hardened register. "The same way you're trying to survive right now."

Meng Yao opened her mouth to snap a retort, but a sudden, violent spasm racked her entire frame. She stumbled backward, breaking the contact of the blade. A choked gasp escaped her lips, followed by a thick spray of dark, almost black blood that splattered across the damp moss. She dropped to one knee, clutching her chest as an obsidian brand on her collarbone pulsed with a toxic, agonizing light.

"Don't... look at me," she squeezed out through gritted teeth, her fingers digging into the dirt as she tried to force herself up. "Stay back."

"That is a soul-binding curse," Chen Mo observed, taking a slow step toward her, his amber eyes locking onto the glowing brand. "Your own sect is eating you alive from the inside out."

"I told you to shut up," she wheezed, coughing up more of the foul, dark liquid. "I can still take your head before I succumb."

"No, you can't," Chen Mo countered, kneeling in front of her. He held up his right hand, letting the shimmering, obsidian black scales catch the low light of the forest. The primordial power within him throbbed, generating an intense, visceral heat. "Look at this. My blood is volatile. It burns away impurities. It melts down broken pathways."

Meng Yao looked up, her vision blurring, her face pale with agony. "What are you... what are you saying?"

"I am proposing a trade," Chen Mo said, his voice carrying the calm, calculating weight of a true negotiator. "I will use my blood to suppress your curse. I will force that poison back into hibernation."

She let out a ragged, cynical laugh. "And why would a cultivator from a grand clan help an assassin from the Shadow Demon Sect?"

"Because my clan wants to cut my heart out and put it in a box," Chen Mo said, the raw bitterness in his words slicing through the chilly air. "We are the same, assassin. We are both hunted by the people who were supposed to protect us. You know this mountain better than I do. Give me a path out of these woods, and I will give you a reprieve from your agony."

Meng Yao stared at him, her chest heaving as she searched his face for any sign of deceit. For a fleeting second, the cold mask of the killer dropped, revealing a deeply broken, terrified girl who recognized the exact same hollow look of betrayal in his eyes.

"It will kill us both if you are lying," she whispered, her voice cracking.

"Then we die together in the dirt," Chen Mo replied. "It is still a better death than letting them harvest us."

She paused, the agonizing heat of the curse tearing another groan from her lips. "Fine. Do it. But if you try anything else, I will drive my dagger through your eye."

"Deal," Chen Mo said.

He didn't hesitate. He took his dark dagger and sliced a deep line across his left palm. The blood that emerged was thick, glowing with a faint, boiling crimson energy that hissed as it met the cool mountain air. He reached out, his hand hovering over her collarbone where the black brand was burning through her skin.

"This is going to hurt," he warned.

"Just do it," she snapped, clutching her knees.

Chen Mo pressed his bloody palm directly against her bare shoulder, right over the pulsing obsidian brand.

The moment his primordial blood made contact with her skin, Meng Yao arched her back, a piercing scream tearing from her throat. It wasn't a normal physical pain. The volatile energy from Chen Mo's veins stormed into her body like a wild beast, violently colliding with the dark, restrictive chains of the Shadow Demon Sect's curse.

"Hold on," Chen Mo grunted, his own chest flaring with intense, sympathetic heat as the connection deepened. "Don't fight it. Let my blood burn the curse back."

"It's... it's too hot," she gasped, her fingers clawing at his tattered robes, her fingernails tearing against his chest. "Mo... stop..."

"I can't stop," he shouted over a sudden, rising hum in the air. "If I pull away now, the backlash will tear your soul apart."

The collision of their energies didn't just stay confined to their bodies. The primordial crimson force of Chen Mo’s lineage mixed with the deep, hidden golden core fragments lingering in Meng Yao’s suppressed soul. The reaction was immediate and catastrophic.

A sharp, deafening pop echoed through the clearing, followed by a blinding flash of golden and crimson light that erupted from their intertwined bodies.

The light didn't just illuminate the clearing; it shot upward like a massive, violent pillar of fire, piercing straight through the thick gray mist of the Forbidden Mountain. The brilliant beacon tore into the sky, casting a vivid, unnatural glow that could be seen for hundreds of miles across the entire province, signaling their exact coordinates to every hunter in the region.

The pillar of light abruptly snapped, plunging the clearing back into darkness.

Chen Mo stumbled backward, breaking the contact, his left hand smoking from the intense spiritual discharge. He fell to his knees, gasping for air as the scales on his arm rippled and receded slightly.

Meng Yao collapsed onto her side, panting heavily, her skin covered in sweat. She touched her collarbone with trembling fingers. The black brand had turned a dull, lifeless gray, completely silent for the first time in years.

"You... you actually did it," she whispered, her grey eyes wide with absolute shock as she looked at him. "The pain is gone."

"Don't thank me yet," Chen Mo choked out, his eyes widening as he looked up at the sky. "Look above us."

Meng Yao forced herself to her feet, following his gaze. The relief on her face vanished, replaced by an expression of pure horror.

The gray mist of the mountain wasn't just clearing; it was being violently shredded. The sky directly above their heads was turning a deep, unnatural pitch black, the stars completely disappearing as if swallowed by an inkwell.

"What is that?" Chen Mo asked, his iron pathways humming with a sudden, suffocating panic. "Is this part of your curse?"

"No," Meng Yao whispered, her voice trembling violently as she dropped her daggers. "This is something else. This is a suppression field."

Before Chen Mo could ask another question, a monolithic, invisible spiritual pressure descended from the black sky like a falling mountain. It didn't just hit the trees; it flattened the entire forest canopy in a split second, snapping ancient trunks like twigs.

The weight slammed into Chen Mo's back with the force of a battering ram. He let out a choked groan, his knees buckling instantly as he was slammed face first into the hard stone floor of the clearing. Right next to him, Meng Yao hit the ground just as hard, her breath leaving her in a sharp gasp as the immense pressure pinned her limbs flat against the dirt.

The air grew so thick it felt like liquid lead, making it entirely impossible to breathe, let alone stand.

"We are trapped," Meng Yao choked out, her cheek pressed against the mud, her eyes locked onto the edge of the clearing where the shadows were beginning to twist. "They found us."
