Victor called before breakfast.

"I checked Martin Hale," he said. "There's a man with that name who worked for a records company in London. The dates match what Helen told us."

"Can you prove he's the one who picked up the files?"

"Not yet. I found an old company report that lists him as a delivery clerk. I'm trying to get the visitor records from back then."

"Keep going. We need something we can prove."

Adrian went downstairs. Elena was already at a table with a coffee, reading her notes from

  • CHAPTER 57: THE ORDER FROM ABOVE

Adrian read the hospital report three times.A law office had asked for the visitor pass in Daniel Cole's name. The request was made the afternoon before Marcus was found. The office was linked to Graham Voss. But the report didn't prove Voss made the request himself.Adrian knew the difference. He had seen too many people hide behind other people's names."Victor, I want the full request," he said. "Not just the name on the form. Get who sent it, who approved it, and when it was processed."Victor nodded. "The hospital has kept the records. The police will ask for them the proper way.""And find out if that office has any real link to Daniel."Elena put her phone on the table."There's another problem. Redmont Advisory wants to take some of its old records out of storage. They asked this morning."Adrian looked at her."Which records?""The payment files tied to Northstar Consulting."<

  • CHAPTER 56: THE NAME THAT WAS ADDED

Adrian had barely left the hospital when Detective Harris called him back."We found something in the video," Harris said. "You need to see it."Adrian turned back toward the hospital door."What is it?""The man with the scar wasn't alone.""Who was with him?""We can't tell who the second person is yet. But that person walked into the hospital through the main door twenty minutes after Marcus was brought in."Adrian stopped walking."Did they go to Marcus's room?""Yes.""Why didn't your officers stop them?""They got in before we knew Marcus was part of the case. The hospital wrote them down as a visitor. They left before we knew who he was.""Do you have a name?"Harris paused."The visitor signed in as Daniel Cole."Adrian felt a chill."My cousin was kidnapped weeks ago.""I know. We checked with him. Daniel says he wasn't at the hospital."<

  • CHAPTER 55: THE WITNESS IN ROOM 12

Adrian got to the hospital before sunrise. Two police officers stood outside Room 12. A nurse had told Detective Harris the hurt man was stable, but he still hadn't woken up."Do we know who he is?" Adrian asked.Harris shook his head."They're checking his fingerprints. He had no wallet. But he had a photo in his pocket. It shows him with you and your dad."Adrian knew the photo without seeing it. It was an old family picture, from before his life fell apart."Can I see him?""Not yet. The doctor's with him."Adrian looked through the small window in the door. The man lay still under a white sheet. His face was swollen. A bandage covered part of his forehead. He looked older than Adrian remembered. But Adrian had learned not to trust what he saw. Too many people had hidden behind fake names and made-up stories."What happened to him?" Adrian asked."We found him near the hospita

  • CHAPTER 54: WHAT THE KEY UNLOCKED

The police had found the car that belonged to Graham Voss. But Graham was gone.At 6:40 that morning, Adrian stood in a police station, watching a traffic camera video on a computer. It showed a dark car leaving the bus station twenty minutes before Marcus Cole's bag was found. The plate matched Graham's car.The camera angle hid the driver's face."Where did the car go?" Adrian asked.Detective Harris paused the video."We tracked it to an underground car park three streets away. Someone left it there. The owner said it was stolen last night.""Did anyone see who left it?""One worker remembers a man with a brown folder. He can't say who it was."Adrian looked at the frozen picture.Marcus had a brown folder when he vanished. A folder like that had gone missing from his old office too.But that didn't prove Marcus was in the car."Can we search it?" Adrian asked."We alre

  • CHAPTER 53: THE SECOND PAYMENT

Adrian had spent eight years following money. Now it was leading him to a man who had run away twice.Marcus Cole had taken a thin brown folder and vanished. The police were looking for him, but no one knew where he was.Adrian stood in Victor's office. He was looking at the torn payment sheet from Marcus's old office."Can we trace the account?" he asked.Victor fixed his glasses. "It belongs to Redmont Advisory. But the money went through a legal services account first. Then it went to Marcus's debt account.""So we need to find out who ran the middle account.""That's what I'm trying to do." Victor put another paper on the desk. "The bank kept the payment instructions. We can ask for the full records the legal way.""How long will that take?""A few hours if they help. Longer if they don't."Adrian looked at the clock. "Then let's give them a reason to help."---By noon, Victor had set up

  • Chapter 52: The Price of Silence

Adrian's phone rang again."Have you found Marcus?""Not yet," the officer said. "His taxi was seen near his old office. We're looking there.""Why would he go there?""We don't know."Adrian hung up and grabbed his coat.Victor stood. "I'm coming.""Tell the police where we're going. We don't go in until they're there."In the car, Adrian called Marcus. No answer. He called again. Voicemail. He was angry. But under the anger was something else.Fear.Marcus had just said Redmont paid his debts. He had said Voss brought him papers after Richard died. If Marcus vanished now, the truth might vanish with him.Two police cars were already outside the old office. An officer met them at the door. "We found his taxi. The driver left him here about forty minutes ago. He hasn't come out.""Have you been inside?" Victor asked."Not yet. We're waiting for the bui
