Adrian called Marcus back.

Voicemail.

He tried again. Nothing.

"Find out where he is," Adrian told Victor. "But don't send anyone to his house until you check with the police."

Victor nodded. "What about the payment record?"

"Keep it safe. Make two copies. One stays with our lawyers, the other goes to the investigator on the case."

"And if Marcus is right?"

Adrian looked at the handwritten note.

  • Chapter 46: The Name Behind the Payment

Adrian had hardly slept when Victor called."We found something," Victor said. "You need to see it yourself.""Is it about Nathan?""Partly. It might also explain how the last page got to the court."Adrian sat up. "Where are you?""At the office. Elena's here too.""Give me twenty minutes."He hung up and got dressed fast. For years, people had told him his father signed away his rights before he died. His family used that story to explain everything they did. It made Adrian look like a greedy son who couldn't accept the truth. Now the evidence was pointing somewhere else. But Adrian had learned not to trust a clue just because it said what he wanted to hear.He needed proof.---Victor had laid out a pile of records across the meeting table. Elena stood next to a screen showing a payment report."The police traced the rental payment for Nathan's abandoned c

  • Chapter 45: The Page That Came Later

Adrian looked at the photo on Victor's phone.RICHARD COLE DID NOT SIGN THE FINAL PAGE.Black ink, on a plain sheet of paper. It had been found in an abandoned car."Who took this?" he asked."The police sent it to me," Victor said. "They found the paper on the back seat, folded up inside a black case.""Can they say it came from Nathan?""No. The case wasn't locked. The car door was open too. Anyone could have put it there."Adrian read the words again.Someone wanted him to doubt the transfer document. Fine. But why leave the warning where the police would find it first?"Get me the report on that car," he said. "And find out who owned the case.""Already on it."Adrian picked up his coat."Where are you going?""To see the man who handed that document to the court.""Peter Shaw.""Yes. If Graham Voss gave him the papers, Shaw might know when he got

  • Chapter 44: The Signature That Came Too Late

Adrian walked into the courthouse on one hour of sleep. In his head he kept going over the new document, the one that could undo everything he had worked out so far.Victor walked next to him with a thick folder under his arm."They want the judge to believe your father gave up his rights before he died," Victor said. "If the judge buys that, they'll say nobody can force the current holder to hand over the original.""And we still don't know who has it.""Right. We also don't know if this new paper is real."Adrian looked at the courtroom doors."Then they have to prove it."Their lawyer, Mr. Grant, was already inside. He had read the new filing and put tabs on a few pages."Don't expect the judge to decide who owns it today," he said. "What we want is simple. Nobody moves or destroys the original, and the court looks hard at this new paper."Adrian nodded. He wanted answers right now. But if

No sign of a fight, but someone searched the room," Inspector Harris said. "We're checking the building and talking to the neighbors.""Did you find the copy he told me about?""No. Just an empty drawer and a broken lock."Adrian looked at Elena. She had heard everything."Nathan knew someone was coming," she said, once the call ended. "Maybe he left before they got there.""Or maybe they got to him first."Adrian called Nathan again. The phone was off.He wanted to be angry at Nathan for hiding things. But the man with the scar kept showing up. Daniel saw him. Vivian saw him. Now Nathan was gone right after talking about the same man. That was too much to ignore."I'm going to that address.""The police are already there," Elena said. "You can help more by figuring out what Nathan meant about the second line."Adrian stopped. She was right. Running from place

We gave it to a temporary guard eight months ago.""Name?""Leon Price.""Does he still work here?""No. He left five months ago.""Then why was his card at Vivian's house?""I don't know.
