By nine in the morning, the Cole Meridian boardroom was already full.

Marcus Cole sat at the head of the table.

He no longer looked as confident as he had the previous evening.

Neither did the directors around him.

Adrian walked in with Victor and Elena.

The conversation stopped.

Marcus looked at him.

“You're late.”

Adrian pulled out a chair.

“No. You started without me.”

A few directors exchanged uncomfortable glances.

Marcus tapped his fingers against the table.

“This meeting concerns the future of Cole Meridian. It isn't a place for personal grudges.”

“Then you shouldn't have invited me.”

Marcus's expression tightened.

“You don't understand what you're dealing with.”

“I understand the numbers.”

Adrian placed a folder on the table.

Victor placed another beside it.

Elena remained standing.

Marcus didn't touch either folder.

“What is this?”

“Money that disappeared from three Cole Meridian subsidiaries over the last four years.”

Marcus glanced at the documents.

“Old transactions.”

“Twenty-six million dollars isn't old when nobody can explain where it went.”

One director picked up the first page.

Another began reading.

Marcus leaned forward.

“These transactions were approved by the previous management.”

“My father?”

“Yes.”

Adrian looked at him.

“Then why were the transfers made through companies created after his death?”

Marcus didn't answer.

The room became uncomfortable.

Adrian pushed another document across the table.

“These companies were controlled by Grant Strategic Holdings.”

That name changed Marcus's expression.

Only for a second.

But Adrian noticed.

So did Elena.

Victor leaned toward Adrian.

“That reaction tells us enough.”

Marcus stood.

“This meeting is over.”

“No.”

Adrian's voice wasn't loud.

It didn't need to be.

Marcus stared at him.

“You don't have the authority to stop me.”

“I do.”

Adrian nodded toward Elena.

She placed a document in front of every director.

“The debt positions previously held by four major creditors have been transferred to Apex Meridian Holdings.”

Marcus's face went still.

One director looked up.

“Apex Meridian?”

“Yes,” Elena said.

“Who authorized the transfers?”

“The creditors did.”

Marcus looked at Adrian.

“You.”

Adrian didn't deny it.

“I acquired the debt.”

“You're trying to destroy this company.”

“No.”

Adrian opened his folder.

“I'm trying to stop someone else from destroying it.”

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“You think buying debt makes you powerful?”

“No.”

Adrian looked around the table.

“Ownership does.”

The room fell silent.

Elena distributed the final document.

“This is the current voting structure.”

Several directors studied the numbers.

Then one of them slowly raised his head.

“Apex Meridian controls thirty-eight percent.”

Marcus turned toward him.

“That's impossible.”

“It was impossible yesterday,” Elena said. “Not today.”

Marcus looked back at Adrian.

“How did you do this?”

Adrian leaned back.

“By being patient.”

For the first time, Marcus seemed unsure of what to say.

Adrian stood.

“I am requesting a vote to remove Marcus Cole as acting chairman pending an investigation into the company's missing assets and the transactions connected to Grant Strategic Holdings.”

Marcus slammed his hand against the table.

“You don't get to walk into this company after eight years and take everything!”

Adrian looked at him.

“You took it from me eight years ago.”

“That was your father's decision.”

“No.”

Adrian's voice dropped.

“That was yours.”

The vote began.

One director voted against Marcus.

Then another.

Then another.

Marcus watched the numbers change.

He had spent years controlling this room.

In less than ten minutes, it was slipping away.

When the final vote was counted, the decision was clear.

Marcus was removed as acting chairman.

He remained a shareholder.

He remained dangerous.

But he no longer controlled the company.

Nobody celebrated.

Adrian didn't either.

He knew better.

This wasn't the end.

It was the first door opening.

Marcus gathered his papers.

As he passed Adrian, he stopped.

“You think you've won.”

Adrian looked at him.

“I took back what belonged to me.”

Marcus lowered his voice.

“You have no idea what your father left behind.”

Adrian's expression changed.

“What does that mean?”

Marcus smiled without answering.

Then he walked out.

Adrian watched him leave.

Elena came over.

“You wanted him removed. You got it.”

Adrian shook his head.

“I wanted answers.”

“And?”

“I got another question.”

Victor placed the final document in front of him.

“There's more.”

Adrian looked down.

The document contained the names of the directors and shareholders connected to the old transfers.

One name had been marked.

**Vivian Cole.**

Adrian stared at it.

His aunt.

The woman who had claimed she wanted to protect him.

He picked up his phone.

Before he could call her, a message appeared.

**Congratulations.**

A second message followed.

**You took the company.**

Then a third.

**Now let's see if you can keep it.**

Adrian looked toward Elena.

“Find out who sent this.”

Elena nodded.

Victor gathered the documents.

“And what about Marcus?”

Adrian looked through the glass wall toward the corridor where his uncle had disappeared.

“Don't follow him.”

Victor frowned.

“Why?”

“Because I want to know where he goes when nobody is watching.”

Adrian slipped the phone into his pocket.

For eight years, his family had controlled the story.

Now he controlled the company.

But the moment he took it back, someone had made their move.

And Adrian was beginning to understand something his father had known before he died.

The company had never been the real prize.
