Adrian didn't go home after the board meeting.

He went straight to the Apex Meridian office.

The building was nearly empty when he arrived.

Elena was waiting for him on the twenty-second floor, a tablet in her hand.

“You were right about one thing,” she said.

Adrian stopped.

“Marcus?”

“No. The message.”

She turned the tablet around.

“The sender didn't use a Cole Meridian account.”

Adrian studied the screen.

“It came from inside Apex.”

That was the answer he hadn't wanted.

Victor arrived a few minutes later.

“Any idea who?”

Elena shook her head.

“Not yet. But whoever sent it had access to an internal security terminal.”

Adrian walked toward the glass wall overlooking the city.

Apex Meridian had taken years to build.

He had trusted very few people with it.

Richard had taught him that trust wasn't something you gave because someone seemed loyal. It was something people earned when there was something to lose.

“Show me the access records.”

Elena opened them.

“There were three unusual logins last night.”

“Names?”

“Nathan Brooks. Director of Internal Operations.”

Victor frowned.

“Nathan has been with Apex for six years.”

“Seven,” Elena corrected.

Adrian turned.

“You know him?”

“I recruited him.”

That answer made the room quieter.

Adrian looked back at the screen.

“What did he access?”

“Corporate archives. Security reports. And one restricted folder.”

Victor stepped closer.

“Which folder?”

Elena hesitated.

“Richard Cole Archive 17.”

Adrian's attention sharpened.

“Why would Nathan have access to that?”

“He shouldn't.”

“Call him.”

Nathan arrived twenty minutes later.

He was in his early forties, neatly dressed, with the calm manner of someone who had spent years working around powerful people.

He looked at Adrian.

“Chairman.”

Adrian pointed toward the chair.

“Sit.”

Nathan did.

Elena placed the access report on the table.

“Your credentials were used to enter Archive 17.”

Nathan glanced at it.

“I didn't access it.”

“The system says you did.”

“Then someone used my credentials.”

Adrian watched him carefully.

“Did you lose your access card?”

“No.”

“Share your password?”

“No.”

“Leave your workstation unattended?”

Nathan paused.

“Yesterday. For about ten minutes.”

“Where?”

“The executive floor.”

Adrian exchanged a glance with Elena.

“Why?”

Nathan looked uncomfortable.

“I received a call.”

“From whom?”

“I don't know.”

Victor leaned against the desk.

“You don't know who called you?”

“The number was blocked.”

Adrian studied him.

“What did the caller say?”

Nathan's answer came slowly.

“He told me to check whether Archive 17 was still sealed.”

Adrian's expression hardened.

“Why would a stranger know about Archive 17?”

Nathan didn't answer.

Elena stepped forward.

“You're hiding something.”

Nathan looked at her.

“I've worked for Apex Meridian for seven years. I have no reason to betray the company.”

Adrian interrupted.

“I'm not asking about the company.”

Nathan looked at him.

“I'm asking about my father.”

That changed his expression.

Only slightly.

But it was enough.

Adrian saw it.

“You knew Richard.”

Nathan looked away.

“I met him.”

“When?”

“Before Apex Meridian existed.”

“Where?”

Nathan hesitated.

“Cole Meridian.”

Victor straightened.

“You worked for my father?”

“For a short time.”

Adrian picked up the access report.

“Why didn't you mention that before?”

Nathan looked at him.

“Because you never asked.”

Adrian stared at him.

Then his phone rang.

Elena answered it.

Her face changed.

“Adrian.”

“What?”

“Someone just entered Nathan's office.”

They all turned toward the corridor.

Nathan stood immediately.

“That’s impossible.”

Elena checked the security feed.

“The person isn't using an access card.”

Adrian was already moving.

They reached Nathan's office.

The door was open.

Nobody was inside.

But a drawer had been forced open.

Documents were scattered across the floor.

Victor looked around.

“What were they searching for?”

Nathan walked toward his desk.

Adrian stopped him.

“Don't touch anything.”

Elena examined the room.

“Computer's still here.”

“So they weren't looking for money,” Victor said.

Adrian noticed a small envelope beneath the desk.

He picked it up carefully.

There was no name on it.

Inside was a photograph.

Richard Cole stood beside three men.

Marcus was one.

Elijah Grant was another.

The third man was unfamiliar.

On the back of the photograph was the same three-line symbol Adrian had seen at the warehouse.

Underneath it were four words.

**HE WAS THERE TOO.**

Adrian looked at Nathan.

“Who is he?”

Nathan stared at the photograph.

“I don't know.”

“You're lying.”

Nathan's face tightened.

“I swear I don't know his name.”

Adrian turned the photograph over again.

There was a date.

Three days before his father's death.

Victor took a closer look.

“Wait.”

He pointed at the man's hand.

“He's wearing a ring.”

Adrian studied it.

The ring carried the same three-line symbol.

His phone vibrated.

A message appeared from an unknown number.

**Stop looking for Archive 17.**

A second message followed.

**Your father already paid for it.**

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

Then another message arrived.

**Don't make him pay twice.**

Adrian stared at the screen.

His father was dead.

Yet someone was speaking as if Richard could still be harmed.

Elena looked at him.

“What does it mean?”

Adrian slipped the phone into his pocket.

“I don't know.”

He looked at the photograph again.

“But we're getting closer.”

Nathan suddenly spoke.

“There is one thing.”

Adrian turned.

“What?”

Nathan swallowed.

“Before Richard left Cole Meridian that night, he gave me something.”

Adrian stepped closer.

“What?”

“A key.”

“Where is it?”

Nathan looked toward the locked cabinet at the back of the office.

“I thought it was worthless.”

Adrian's expression hardened.

“Show me.”

Nathan opened the cabinet.

The key was gone.

Someone had already taken it.

Adrian stared at the empty space.

The person who had entered the office hadn't been searching for Archive 17.

They had been searching for the key.

And they had found it first.
