Chapter 4: Shadows of Vachirawit

Chai stood by the environmental control panel, his borrowed fingers twitching with a rhythmic, nervous energy. The "Great Eater" conversation continued at the floating table, the voices of the elite drifting through the perfume-soaked air like poison. Chai’s eyes, hidden behind the dull, submissive gaze of Prakit, scanned the man at the head of the table.

"Hey, Box," Chai whispered, his voice barely a vibration in the hum of the lounge. "The guy in the charcoal suit. The one who looks like he’s never had a bad day in his entire life. Who is he?"

"Vachirawit," Chai repeated, the name like ash in his mouth. "I knew I recognized that smug face. He’s the guy who bought out my block three years ago. My aunt had to move into a shipping container because of his 'urban renewal' project. He looks even worse in person. Like a wax figure left out in the sun."

[NOTICE: VACHIRAWIT POSSESSES HIGH-LEVEL ENERGY SIGNATURES. DIRECT CONFRONTATION IS NOT ADVISED AT CURRENT HOST LEVEL.]

"I’m not an idiot, Box. I can smell the power coming off him. It feels like standing next to a live wire," Chai muttered. "But look at the guy standing right behind him. The one with the gelled hair and the iPad. He’s been whispering in Vachirawit’s ear for ten minutes."

[TARGET IDENTIFIED: KRIT. PERSONAL ASSISTANT AND LOGISTICS COORDINATOR FOR VACHIRAWIT. ACCESS LEVEL: OMEGA. BIOLOGICAL RATING: LOW-THREAT.]

"Krit, huh? He looks like the kind of guy who’d sell his own mother for a promotion," Chai said, a slow, dark grin forming under the mask of Prakit. "If I take him, I’m basically Vachirawit’s shadow. I get into the meetings, I get the passcodes, and I get close enough to see what a god actually tastes like."

At the table, Vachirawit leaned back, swiveling his glass of amber liquid. The ice clinked—a sound of pure luxury in a world that was currently melting.

"The culling is behind schedule," Vachirawit said, his voice smooth and devoid of any warmth. "The automated gates at Sector 7 are clogged with... biomass. It’s slowing down the flow of the sacrifice. Krit, why hasn't this been handled?"

Krit stepped forward, bowing his head so low he was practically looking at Vachirawit’s polished shoes. "Sir, the pressure from the crowd is exceeding the turret capacity. We’re literally running out of ammunition for the incinerators. We’ve redirected the maintenance teams to clear the grates manually."

"Manually?" Vachirawit scoffed, looking disgusted. "I don't pay for manual. I pay for efficiency. If the grates are clogged, turn up the heat. Let them melt until they can be pumped out as liquid. I want the Sector 7 perimeter clear by midnight. The Great Eater doesn't like a messy plate."

"Of course, sir. I’ll go to the sub-level myself to oversee the pressure increase," Krit said, his voice trembling slightly. "I’ll make sure the flow is restored immediately."

"See that you do," Vachirawit said, dismissing him with a wave of his hand. "And Krit? Don't get any of that filth on your shoes. I have a dinner at eight."

Krit nodded frantically and turned, walking briskly toward the service exit. Chai didn't miss a beat. He tapped a few buttons on the control panel, causing a fake alarm to chime softly on his station.

"Oh no," Chai said loudly, catching the attention of the woman with the clipboard. "Pressure spike in the sub-level lines. If I don't vent the Obsidian Lounge’s secondary scrubber, we’re going to get a backflow of ozone."

"Then go fix it, you idiot!" she hissed. "Don't just stand there telling me about it!"

"On it! Sorry! Moving as fast as I can!" Chai said, putting on his best 'clumsy worker' act.

He slipped out the door just as Krit was rounding the corner toward the private elevator. The hallway was a long, clinical stretch of white light and silence. Chai’s heart began to thump against his ribs, a heavy, predatory drumbeat.

"Hey, Box," Chai whispered, his body already beginning to hum with the need to shift. "How’s the hunger?"

[HUNGER LEVEL: 58%. BIOLOGICAL ESSENCE REQUIRED FOR OPTIMAL INTEGRATION OF NEW FORM.]

"Good. Because Krit looks like he’s made of pure, grade-A stress. That’s probably good for the heart," Chai muttered.

He sped up, his footsteps silent on the plush carpet. He caught up to Krit just as the man was swiping his card at the elevator.

"Excuse me! Mr. Krit!" Chai called out, his voice back to Prakit’s raspy tone.

Krit spun around, his face a mask of irritation. "What? Who are you? I’m in a hurry. Vachirawit is in a mood, and I don't have time for maintenance reports."

"I know, I know! I’m Prakit, from the scrubber team," Chai said, breathing hard. "The sub-level lift is jammed. A bunch of... stuff... got caught in the gears. If you use the main elevator, you’ll be stuck for an hour. I can take you through the service chute. It’s faster."

Krit groaned, rubbing his temples. "An hour? Are you serious? I’ll be executed if I’m not back in twenty minutes. Fine. Lead the way. But if I get grease on this suit, I’m personally seeing to it that you’re transferred to the waste-reclamation pits."

"Oh, wouldn't dream of it, sir," Chai said, stepping toward a heavy steel door marked Maintenance Access - Authorized Personnel Only. "Right this way. It’s a bit dark, but it’s a straight shot."

They stepped into the narrow, dimly lit service corridor. The air here was colder, smelling of grease and heavy machinery. As the heavy door hissed shut behind them, the sound of the lounge vanished. It was just the two of them and the distant, low-frequency hum of the Ark’s stabilizers.

"God, it’s disgusting back here," Krit said, holding a silk handkerchief to his nose. "How do you people work in this? It smells like a wet basement."

"You get used to it," Chai said, his voice losing the Prakit inflection. It was becoming deeper, more resonant. "After a while, you don't even smell the grease. You just smell the fear."

Krit stopped in his tracks. "What? What did you just say?"

Chai turned around. In the dim red emergency lighting of the corridor, his eyes began to glow. A slow, golden pulse that filled the narrow space.

"I said, you guys really are the worst," Chai said, his shoulders broadening as his jumpsuit began to strain. "Talking about people like they’re just 'biomass' to be pumped out? That’s cold, Krit. Even for a guy with gelled hair."

"Prakit? What’s wrong with your face?" Krit stepped back, his hand fumbling for the radio on his belt. "Security! I need a—"

Chai moved faster than the human eye could follow. He didn't shift into his full seven-foot form—not yet. He just let his hand transform. His fingers elongated into obsidian talons, and he pinned Krit against the wall, his claws sinking an inch into the reinforced padding.

"The radio isn't going to work, buddy," Chai growled, his jaw unhinging slightly to reveal the rows of serrated teeth. "The shielding in this corridor is a real pain. You told me that yourself, remember? Well, you will in a second."

"Please! I’m just an assistant!" Krit blubbered, tears instantly streaming down his face. "I don't make the rules! I just do what Vachirawit tells me! Take my watch! It’s worth more than your life! Just let me go!"

"That’s the problem, Krit," Chai said, leaning in until his glowing eyes were inches from the man’s face. "You think everything has a price. My life? Vinit’s life? The people at the gates? You think we’re just numbers on your iPad. But here’s the thing about numbers. Sometimes, they add up."

"What are you?" Krit whispered, his voice cracking.

"I’m the guy who’s going to take your job," Chai said. "And your face. And your memories. Don't worry, though. I’ll make sure Vachirawit gets exactly what's coming to him. You’re just the first course."

"No! Wait! I—"

Chai didn't let him finish. The hunger flared, a white-hot sun in the center of his chest. He lunged.

The corridor fell silent, save for the wet, rhythmic sound of consumption and the occasional crunch of bone. It was over in less than a minute. Chai stood in the center of the narrow hallway, breathing heavily. He looked down at his hands, which were covered in a shimmering, golden ichor that was rapidly being absorbed into his skin.

[ACQUIRING IDENTITY: KRIT, EXECUTIVE ASSISTANT.]

[INTEGRATING LOGISTICS DATA... ACCESSING VACHIRAWIT’S PRIVATE SCHEDULE... SUCCESS.]

Chai closed his eyes as the rush of information hit him. He saw the layout of the entire Ark. He saw the security codes for the private penthouse. He saw Vachirawit’s bank accounts, his mistresses, and his deep-seated fear of the very "Great Eater" he was trying to appease.

"Wow," Chai whispered, his body beginning to warp and shift. "This guy was even more of a snake than I thought. He’s been skimming off the top of the defense budget for months. He’s planning to bail on the Ark if the shields fail."

Chai’s height decreased, his frame becoming slighter, more refined. His matte-grey scales receded, replaced by smooth, pale skin. His hair grew and styled itself into a perfect, gelled coif. He looked down and saw his hands—soft, manicured, and holding an iPad.

"How do I look, Box? Ready for the eight o'clock dinner?"

[RESEMBLANCE: 100%. ALL BIOMETRIC SCANS WILL IDENTIFY YOU AS KRIT. WARNING: VACHIRAWIT IS AN AWAKENED. HE MAY DETECT AURA FLUCTUATIONS IF YOU GET TOO CLOSE.]

"Then I’ll just have to keep my aura tucked in," Chai said, picking up the silk handkerchief from the floor and wiping a stray drop of gold from his new shoes. "Krit was a coward. I can do coward. It’s the easiest role in the world."

He stepped out of the service corridor and back into the main hallway. He walked with a brisk, nervous energy, his eyes fixed on the iPad. He looked exactly like a man who was terrified of his boss.

"Hey, Box," Chai said, his voice now a perfect, high-pitched match for Krit’s. "What’s the next thing on the schedule?"

[NOTICE: VACHIRAWIT HAS REQUESTED A PRIVATE BRIEFING ON THE SECTOR 7 CLEARANCE IN TEN MINUTES. LOCATION: THE INNER SANCTUM.]

"Perfect," Chai said, a cold, calculated light in his eyes. "I’ve got a lot to tell him. I think he’s really going to hate the news."

He stepped into the private elevator and swiped the OMEGA-level card. As the lift began to rise toward the highest point of the Ark, Chai caught his reflection in the mirrored walls. He looked like the perfect elite. He looked like power.

But behind the gelled hair and the expensive suit, the monster was still there, sharpening its claws and waiting for the main course.

"Vachirawit," Chai whispered to the empty elevator. "I hope you’re hungry. Because I’m absolutely starving."

"I ate the last squad on Level 75, and the tier below that is currently running on pure panic and bad wiring.
