Justin Forbes jolted awake to the sharp sting of cold metal pressing against his wrists. Blinking against the harsh fluorescent light, he realized he was no longer in the alley, no longer on familiar pavement.

He was in a sterile, windowless room, the walls an unbroken gray, the floor echoing every shuffle he made. The golden warmth beneath his skin had receded, but the panic still pulsed in his chest.

Two men stood across from him. Black suits, dark glasses, expressions carved from stone. Their presence radiated authority and danger in equal measure.

“Welcome, Mr. Forbes,” one said, his voice smooth and low, like silk drawn across steel. “You’ve been causing quite a stir.”

Justin struggled against the restraints, but they held fast. “Who… who are you?” His voice cracked, raw from the night’s terror.

The other man stepped closer, revealing a device clipped to his belt. A faint hum emanated from it, and the hairs on Justin’s arms rose involuntarily. “We’re here because you’re special. And special people… attract attention.”

Justin swallowed hard. “I’m not… special. I’m just… I saved someone.”

The first man tilted his head, studying him. “Saved someone, yes. But not just anyone. A critically ill girl in a hospital. With nothing but your hands. And yet,” he paused, lifting a tablet to show Justin the image of the ICU monitor, “you did more than heal. You altered the life force itself.”

Justin’s stomach dropped. He had no idea what they meant, exactly. His hands had flared. The warmth had surged… but he hadn’t meant to manipulate life. It had just happened.

The second man’s lips curled slightly. “Precisely. And that is why you cannot remain free. People like you—untrained, uncontrolled, pose a risk to everything.”

Justin’s heart pounded. “Risk? I wasn’t… I don’t even know how it works.”

The first man stepped forward, tapping a button on the wall. A heavy metal door clicked and swung open. Beyond it, a long, dimly lit corridor stretched. Justin’s eyes widened as he saw the shadows of more men in suits lining the hall, each holding devices similar to the one at the front.

“You’re coming with us,” the first man said calmly. “To a place where your abilities can be… refined.”

Justin’s mind raced. Refined? Or controlled? The last thing he wanted was to be caged, experimented on. He tugged at the restraints, testing their strength, desperation igniting a wild instinct he hadn’t felt before.

Without thinking, he focused. The residual warmth in his hands flared, stronger than ever before, spreading up his arms like liquid fire.

The devices clipped to the men’s belts began to buzz violently, red lights blinking frantically. “What the—” one man shouted, stumbling backward as the energy pulsed outward.

Justin felt something awaken deep inside him. Not just his healing warmth… something sharper, alive, like a thread of power twisting in response to his fear. The lights on the walls flickered; the monitors in the corridor went haywire.

The men in black exchanged a glance, momentarily hesitant. But their training—or their confidence—quickly returned. They lunged.

Justin ducked instinctively. One of the men stumbled into the wall, knocking his device from his hand. The hum cut off, leaving only the echo of their footsteps and Justin’s racing heartbeat.

He bolted, dragging the restraints with him. His legs pumped, adrenaline sharpening his senses. Every shadow looked like a threat, every door a potential escape.

At the end of the corridor, a stairwell beckoned. Justin yanked at the door—locked. His mind raced. Think, Justin. Think.

He slammed his fists against the wall, testing the limits of his power. The warmth surged again, coursing through his veins, pulsing beneath the skin like liquid gold. He clenched his fists and imagined the lock giving way.

Metal groaned. Sparks flew. The lock twisted and shattered. Justin stumbled through, tumoring down the stairs into the basement.

The men in black were close behind. Their footsteps thundered. One of them shouted into a radio. “Contain him! Do not let him escape!”

Justin’s chest tightened. Escape. The word echoed like a command from deep within him. His instincts screamed at him to run. To live.

In the basement, rows of storage crates and crates of medical supplies created a maze of shadows. Justin weaved between them, heart hammering. Then he froze.

Ahead, in the dim light, a figure leaned casually against a crate. Tall, lithe, dressed in black, face partially obscured by a hood. Two small devices hung from their belt—similar to those of the men chasing him.

“You’re stronger than they thought,” the figure said, voice calm, almost amused. “But strength alone won’t save you.”

Justin’s throat went dry. “Who are you?”

The figure pushed off the crate, stepping forward. Their eyes glinted faintly beneath the hood—golden, almost like the faint glow Justin had seen beneath his own skin.

“I’m someone who’s been waiting for you,” the figure said. “And now… you’re going to understand what you truly are.”

The words sent a shiver down Justin’s spine. Something about the figure’s presence was familiar, yet terrifyingly unknown.

The basement lights flickered and went out, plunging them into darkness. Only the faint golden pulse beneath Justin’s skin illuminated the room.

Then, from the shadows, a sound that froze him in place: the unmistakable hum of dozens of devices activating at once. The men in black had caught up. They were surrounding him, closing in from all sides.

Justin’s pulse raced. He flexed his hands, the warmth flaring to a blinding intensity. The glow spread across the walls, crawling like liquid sunlight. The sound of metal and electronic whines filled the air.

And then the figure in the hood stepped forward, raising a hand. “Stop,” they said calmly.

Every man froze mid-step, their devices sparking wildly. Justin’s eyes widened. How…?

The figure tilted their head, a slow smile appearing beneath the shadow of the hood. “You’re not ready to fight them yet,” the figure said softly. “But soon… very soon… You will have no choice.”

Before Justin could respond, the figure disappeared into the shadows, leaving only a faint golden afterglow.

The men in black regained movement, advancing again. Justin backed against a wall, his breath ragged.

Golden light surged beneath his skin uncontrollably. This time, it wasn’t just warmth. It was power. Dangerous, alive power.

And as the basement shook with the hum of devices and electricity, Justin realized the truth: He was no longer just a boy. He was something else. Something that the world wanted, Something that could not be contained.

Justin Forbes felt the future trying to kill him before anyone moved. The sensation crashed into him the instant the stranger’s final words settled across the battlefield. It was not instinct in the normal sense. It was convergence pressure, countless branches suddenly tightening around a single violent possibility.Death.Not his. Everyone else’s.“Get down!” Justin shouted. The warning erupted from him with such urgency that April reacted instantly without asking questions. She threw herself toward Elias just as the fractured sky above them split open again. This time, the rupture did not reveal another version of the city. It revealed an attack.A spear of black energy tore through reality itself and slammed into the battlefield with catastrophic force. The ground exploded upward in a storm of shattered concrete and burning debris. Buildings collapsed in violent succession as shockwaves rippled across the district.April barely managed to raise a defensive barrier before the impact r

Justin Forbes returned to reality just in time to watch a man die twice. The moment his consciousness reconnected with the physical world, the fractured battlefield sharpened into focus around him. The sky still shimmered with faint traces of layered realities, but the violent instability from before had settled into a tense and unnatural calm. Cracked earth stretched across the ruined district, flickering occasionally as weakened branches of possibility struggled to stabilise beneath the dominant reality Justin had chosen. And in the centre of it all, A man collapsed to his knees with blood pouring from his mouth. Then, one second later, the same man stood upright again.Alive.Uninjured.Terrified.Justin’s breath caught. The contradiction struck him instantly because he understood what everyone else could not. The weaker branches had not disappeared. They were leaking.Around the battlefield, people screamed as flashes of alternate outcomes bled briefly into existence. A shattered buil

  • Chapter 27: The Choice That Refuses to End

Justin Forbes never finished his sentence, and the system did not allow him to. The instant he began to speak, something intervened. It was not force, not resistance, and not even opposition in the way he had come to understand it. Instead, the entire structure of the system shifted in a way that disrupted causality itself. The moment stretched, fractured, and folded inward, trapping his unfinished decision in a suspended state where it could neither be completed nor undone. Justin felt it immediately. His voice did not echo. His thought did not conclude. The act of choosing itself had been interrupted.“What… is this?” he asked, though even the question felt delayed, as if it had to fight through layers of interference before it could exist. The system responded, but its voice carried something unfamiliar. Not uncertainty. Not confusion.Something far more unsettling.Restraint.“Finalization paused.”Justin’s eyes narrowed.“You stopped me,” he said, his tone sharpening as realization se

  • Chapter 26: The Cost of Choosing Everything

Justin Forbes began to lose track of where he ended and where everything else began, and the realization struck him not as panic, but as a quiet, creeping danger that settled deep into his awareness. he had expected pressure, resistance, and conflict. What he had not expected was how natural it would feel. That was the most dangerous part. Every branch flowed through him now. Not as separate streams, but as a unified current of possibilities that intersected within his consciousness. Each outcome unfolded with clarity, no longer distant or abstract, but immediate and tangible. He could feel the consequences of every choice before it was made, could see the ripple effects stretching far beyond the battlefield, beyond the Nexus, beyond even the system itself. And yet, the more he understood, the less certain he became.“This is wrong,” he said, his voice echoing across the layered structure of reality. The system responded instantly, its presence no longer external, but intertwined with

  • Chapter 25: The Weight of Infinite Decisions

The system did not wait for Justin Forbes to decide. It forced the decision upon him. The moment the branching realities stabilized into layered existence, conflict erupted not externally, but within the structure itself. Each branch, each possibility that the system had created in its attempt to understand “choice,” began to diverge faster than expected. What had started as controlled multiplicity now strained under the pressure of its own expansion.Justin felt it immediately. Every version.Every outcome.Every possibility. All at once. His mind did not fracture, but it came dangerously close. Within the system’s core, Justin stood at the convergence point, yet “standing” no longer accurately described his state. He existed across multiple layers simultaneously, aware of different outcomes unfolding in parallel. In one branch, the system stabilized peacefully, integrating limitation into its foundation. In another, it expanded uncontrollably, consuming entire regions of reality. In ye

  • Chapter 24: The Moment Humanity Refuses to Disappear

Justin Forbes did not accept the transformation quietly. The instant the system began reshaping him in response to his own influence, something inside him resisted, not violently, not recklessly, but with a fierce, deliberate refusal that cut through the expanding tide of change. The evolution of the system offered was not destruction, nor was it overt domination. It was something far more dangerous. It was an agreement. And Justin realized, with chilling clarity, that if he simply allowed it to continue, he would not vanish as April feared. Instead, he would remain present, aware, and powerful but no longer limited by the boundaries that once defined him. That prospect should have been reassuring. Instead, it unsettled him more than anything else. Inside the core, the shifting structures no longer clashed violently as they had before. They flowed now, adapting around Justin’s presence, incorporating his concept of balance into their foundation. But as the system changed, so did he.
