Chapter 1

Sweats rolled down from the corner of his head as he rode to his workplace as fast as he could.

He could feel his heart beating against his chest as though it were going to burst through because he knew that he was already late.

He was late because he had gone to his girlfriend’s house to help her do their dishes. Likewise, he had to wash her clothes and prepare a meal because it was a weekend.

But he did not care about all this, he loved her so much, and he could give in anything just to make her comfortable in his life. Besides, she is the only one who has ever accepted him into her life.

Right from the day that he was born, he has been ridiculed and despised by everyone around him, and they often saw him as someone who was running crazy because of the torn clothes that he always wore.

Lucas Randell drew a really deep breath. He continued riding on his bicycle as fast as he could.

An air of relief escaped from his mouth when he saw the company that he worked for as a daily delivery guy just before him.

Immediately he got there, he threw his bicycle at the parking lot and began to run into his boss's office, but his boss was already waiting for him at the door. He shot a deadly glare at him, taking every detail of him with disgust written all over his face.

“What took you so long, your piglet? Do you expect us to keep on waiting for you?” He spat from his mouth while Lucas bowed his head, refusing to make eye contact with his boss.

“I am sorry about that, sir. I had to do a few things at home before coming here.” He apologized, but that apology didn't put off the anger of his boss… but seemed to get him even angrier as his face squeezed into a sneer.

“Had to do stuff at home? That's what you always say. Do you think that I care about that? I would have loved to sack your poor butt already, but you know what is still keeping me from doing so? Because whenever I take a look at you, it looks like you are going to starve to death if you don't get this job.” He growled.

“But if you don't change from this stupid act of yours. I will have to leave you at the mercy of that starvation.” He returned.

“I will do better, sir,” Lucas promised.

He got his first order for the day. He had to deliver a box of jewelries to some rich old couples. He got the order wrapped and walked over to his bicycle, but before he got there, he saw two of his colleagues approaching him.

He inched closer. “Hey, Julius.” He greeted, but he was practically ignored. A few minutes later, a burst of dark laughter escaped from their lips.

“Did he even take his bath this morning because he stinks?” He heard them laughing.

“And those shorts of his. He needs to get it washed or changed. Gosh. Never seen a fellow so wretched all my life.” He heard the others saying, but he practically ignored them.

He was already used to all that, and it didn't pull a string on him anymore.

Lucas got on his bicycle and started the delivery for the day. He got a few tips from the people who looked at him to be wretched.

Streams of sweats were already dripping down from his face when he was done for the day. With excitement, he walked over to the office of his boss since it was payday.

He split the door open, and he walked into it, staring at his boss for a while.

“And what are you doing here again? What do you want?” His boss growled.

“Hmm, it's payday.” He informed his boss, with his head bowed in respect.

A cracking sound escaped from his drawer as he drew it open and threw some dollar notes to him, which he caught it in the air.

Lucas counted the money, but it was just a hundred and fifty dollars instead of two hundred.

“But…” he wanted to say it, but his boss would not allow him to spit out a single word from his mouth.

“But what? Do you still have the guts to spit out a single word from your mouth? How dare you fool. You should be grateful that I am even paying you. I could have just thrown the money at the poor. Besides, you are all the same” He spat.

Lucas knew that there was nothing that he could do now. He could not talk back at his boss because he needed the job, or he would face the sad reality of his Life.

He got into his bicycle, but he wasn't heading home. He was heading to a jewelry store to get a gift for his girlfriend Ella. It was her birthday.

A smile hovered on his face as he thought about her. She was his renewed hope. The only one that had ever loved him.

Memories of the first time that they met flickered through his memories. She was the daughter of lord Lugard, one of the most influential people in the City.

And somehow, they got to know each other. It still seemed more like a miracle to him. A poor peasant like himself.

And to crown it all, when he thought that her extremely wealthy family was never going to accept him, what did he get? She bought a dizzying suit worth over a thousand dollars, an amount of money that he has never touched all his life and then, she took him to them and introduced him as her boyfriend.

He finally got to the store and walked into it. He stared at the range of pieces of jewelry and the price tag for them, most of which were expensive.

One caught his eyes, a silver jewelry, glittering like the ray of the moonlight.

“Imagine that on Ella's neck.” He whispered to himself as a smile hovered on his lips, but then, he remembered that he did not have enough money to get that.

He could not help but caress the show glass.

“And what do you think that you are trying to do?” He heard someone calling from behind and when he turned around, he noticed that it was a worker in the store …he saw the badge that was hanging around her neck.

She stared at him with disgust from head to toe, and her face vanished into a frown.

“Get your hands off that, you moron. Do you realize that even if you are sold off, you will never be able to purchase even the covering of that jewelry that you are caressing?” She fired at him, and he got his hands off from the glass covering as fast as he could.

“I'm sorry about that.” He apologized.

“And what are you even doing here? Trying to rob us? I think I need to call security.”

“No, I am trying to get a gift for my girlfriend.” He tried to say, but even before he could get to finish his statement, a burst of laughter escaped from her mouth.

“Are you freaking kidding me right now? And what do you think? That I am some sort of fool that is going to believe that? Do you think that you look like someone that can even call a girl?” She rocked hard with laughter.

Lucas could feel his anger pricking, but he pushed it down immediately. There was no need for that and besides, he was already used to this kind of humiliation.

The only thing that he had to do now was get the gift that he required and leave that place as soon as he could.

He searched around for something that he could afford, and he saw a bracelet with the price tag one hundred and fifty dollars.

It was the only thing that he could afford there and even if it meant that he was going to spend all of his money, Ella was it.

He took the bracelet and paid for it. He got outside and stared at the bracelet for a while.

“I wish that I can get you more, but this is what I can afford. I hope that you are going to like it.” He whispered to himself, with a wide smile.
