chapter 27

I didn't see Emma.

Maybe because I wasn't interested in seeing anyone like her or anyone who looked like her.

She didn't look like Emma Clarke who always took care of her skin, the one whose dresses always looked like the ones in hot celebrity shows.

She was sitting on the bench like every normal person, only that she wasn't normal. Not Emma Clarke.

It was Brandon that had seen her. We were crossing the quad after my morning lecture. Brandon as usual was carrying my laptop bag.

She was sitting on her coat, her hands on her laps, the exact expression of someone who has been waiting for a while.

She looked different.

Not in a good way but different anyways.

I spent one second confirming it before I decided to change direction. I didn't understand why she looked so unkempt even when she lived with Daniel.

She was wearing just an ordinary black coat, her hair parked in a ponytail without any particular attention.

Something was wrong.

“Give me a few minutes.” I turned to Brandon who nodded and stopped walking without asking anything. I'd notice how loyal he was the past few weeks.

I walked over to her and stood. She looked up when she heard someone's footsteps. She had been patiently looking across the whole school and had seen me a walk across to her.

She looked nervous when I sat down on the bench, not beside her but at a distance. I left a little space between us.

She waited before speaking.

“I know you don't want to see me but I'm here.”

“I know.” There was no other response I could think of.

She nodded in a calm way like she had expected the cold response.

She looked across the empty garden. Something told me that she was still deciding whether to say what she wanted or not.

“I heard something just a few nights ago and l need you to know.”

I didn't say anything to her, I just listened. I hoped this wouldn't be like the other time.

“Daniel came home later than usual. I was in bed but not asleep so he wasn't aware that I was awake. I noticed that he had come in with his mother, Victoria. This wasn't the first time she came home with him, so I didn't suspect a thing.” She paused. “They were in his study which was close to our bedroom and the wall isn't as thick as it should be. Daniel doesn't tell me things anymore just like he didn't tell me his mother was coming.”

I looked up at her waiting to hear the conclusion of the story.

“I heard them through the wall,” she continued. “Not every single word but I heard enough. Victoria was talking about Lily's school.”

I was still.

“She was busy analysing and I heard your name too. She was reviewing some plans and the approach was too analytical. She said something about the approach being too direct. I wasn't stupid. I knew she was behind Lily's school attack.”

I took a deep breath.

“She said that Lilly was the most effective leverage to get to you. That was exactly what she said.” Emma paused. She had the same seriousness that I knew about. “She said the priority now was to find out your address. She said it would give them an edge.”

Victoria.

I guess she already knew that I caught on with her plans with Curtis and Doyle as well.

“Did she say how she was going to do all of that?” I asked Emma but she nodded.

“Not specifically.”

After I'd left the Pierce household I've never seen Victoria Pierce with my eyes so I didn't know why she wanted so badly to get me.

“She talked about the necklace as well. She said you were stupid and you didn't know the value that it carried.”

“How long were they talking for?”

“For forty five minutes in total.”

I touched the necklace through my shirt without deciding to. It was my own mother's little gift to me but it seemed like people like Victoria knew something I didn't know.

“Victoria said you were becoming a problem and that you were getting too bold than normal.” A brief pause. “I heard the thing about Sophia so I think she's passed off about it.”

I noted it.

“They finished around Midnight and that was when Victoria left and Daniel came to bed. Of course, he didn't know that I heard anything.

I looked at Emma, she was staring at the bare garden with the expression of someone who wanted peace but was finding it difficult to have.

"Emma." I said her name without particular warmth or coldness. Just to bring her attention back. "Why are you telling me this?"

She looked at me.

“Victoria is going too far by using a five year old child as leverage.” She said that directly without waiting.

I held her gaze.

“The child she talked about had lost her parents and from what I heard, had no one except you. Who in their right senses would use a child as leverage.”

I was quiet for a moment.

Was that really her only reason for doing this?

“You know that this could be dangerous right? You know that if Daniel finds out that you are here, then that is a huge problem.”

“Yes. I know.”

“Then why are you doing this?”

"Because"I've done things I'm not proud of, Ethan. I know that. I know you know that. But I heard that and I couldn't just … " She stopped. Started again. "I couldn't just leave it there."

I was quiet for a moment.

I believed her. Not totally but I believed a part of her story. Victoria was really plotting and I should do something about it before it gets too late.

Emma Clarke was so complex that I totally didn't know what she was thinking. I'd known her to be a goal getter, someone that when she wanted something was willing to go Miles for it.

But she loved children.

I believed that she was doing this, at least part of the reason. When we were together, she always had a soft spot for kids and I knew it.

Even if everything else about Emma was a lie, that part was real. I knew that myself.

It was already such a hectic day and all I wanted to do was take a shower and have some rest, only if Lily wouldn't mind, only shed let me rest today. “What do you think about today?” “Well? It was well productive. I didn't expect Winters to be straightforward.” I didn't expect him too. I thought and looked out of the window with a smile on my lips. Things were slow but they were working. It was working out more than I expected. Now, all I need to do is concentrate on Lily's birthday party and make sure that everyone is fine. “But you know that men like Winters could be trouble.” Of course, I expected this from Henry. He was too careful, the kind of careful where everyone is a suspect until proven otherwise by strong evidence. “What do you mean?” I indulged him. “He found those emails and didn't say anything. He claims to have deleted it but I thought so.” “Well, whether he deleted it or not, we are going to recover the emails then we can see for ourselves what's really happe

I called Gerald on a Monday morning. It was early but Gerald was already at his desk which did not surprise me. Gerald Thompson was the kind of man who arrived at his desk before the city fully woke up."The counter case," I said when he picked up. "Where does it stand?""We filed it four days ago," Gerald said. "The court has acknowledged receipt. We are waiting for a hearing date." He paused. "The other side will have the opportunity to respond to our filing before the hearing. That will take approximately two to three weeks.""And when they respond what happens?" I asked."They will try to find holes in our counter case," Gerald said. "They will look at everything we submitted and try to argue against it. The hospital competency assessment will be their biggest problem because it is an official document signed by an independent psychiatrist. That is very difficult to argue against." He paused. "However they will try.""How?" I asked."They may argue that the assessment was done six

When I went back to the kitchen, Yemi was still sitting at the table looking over every conversation we'd gone over. She looked up when I came in."She is asleep?" she asked."Within thirty seconds," I said.Yemi smiled. She was still sitting at the table and there was no professional reason for her to still be at the table. I guess she stayed because she didn't want to come off as rude. I understood that so I sat down. Not at the other as I usually do but closer. Just close enough for a human interaction between two people who had a go. I was overthinking this already. "She is going to remember this party for a long time," Yemi said quietly."I hope so," I said."Yemi," I called and she looked up at me. “Thank you.” I said it the same way I usually do when I was truly grateful and meant it. “For agreeing to plan this birthday, for the ideas and for always being with her everyday.” I wasn't sure if I dhouod be thanking her for that since it was her job. “She trusts you and that

With Lily's birthday part coming up and the counter case filed, I knew I had to be extremely careful. We had to be mindful of the people that were to be invited. It was a kids party so the children were going to come in with their parents and it would be strictly an invitation. I was still going to talk to Henry about the security and how tight I want it to be. This birthday party was planned to be small but I knew that reporters would always be reporters. They didn't care about anyone but just themselves. The planning started this evening after I spoke to Lily. Sue must have ran to Yemi to tell her what we concluded. She had called this meeting at the kitchen table. Lily sat between me and Yemi with a notepad she had brought from her room. The notepad had a butterfly on the cover and was purple in colour. She pointed at it and told us specifically that she wanted the theme of her party to be like.My laptop was open and Yemi was looking up some things on the Internet. She said sh

Lily was in her room doing her colouring when I entered the room. She didn't look that excited to see me like she usually did. Her room felt dark even though the curtains were and the afternoon sun was shining through the window. “My princess.” I called her. She tried to smile but it was a forced smile so it didn't reach her eyes. “Baby, why do you look so upset?” At the Pierce family house, I made that smile so many times. Now, seeing that same face on Lily made me feel something heavy in my chest.“Baby, why do you look so upset?” I asked her but she looked down at her colouring book. "I'm not upset," she said."Lily."She was quiet.I walked into the room, moved her stuffed animals to the side and sat very close to her. I waited.I've learned that the only thing to do when she has a sour mood is to be present and patient. Pushing or forcing her to talk would simply make her go silent. She then looked up. “Grandpa used to make a big party for me every year,” She started, her

The day after the counter case was filed, Henry came into my office looking a bit concerned. I looked up from my work expecting him to speak up since he was already in the office but he said nothing, instead he glared at me. “Young master, there is something you must know.” He started. Something I must know?Whenever Henry sounded like this, it was important. He always came into my office with a straight face ready to work but I could see that he was trying to be careful as he spoke to me. “What is it, Henry?” “Lily's birthday is coming up in two weeks.” “I know that.” I said dropping my pen wondering if there was something new about Lily's birthday coming up. “I'm well aware that you know. I'm only here to inform you that I wouldn't be available to assist in the planning of the party.” I closed my document and stared at him. In the few months that I have known Henry Abott, he had never been unavailable for anything. He planned meetings, he managed board meetings and literally
