chapter 32

After a hectic day with Daniel Pierce, I got home around half past three, tired. I sat in the backseat for a moment after the car had stopped.

The afternoon sun was shining brightly and perfectly.

I was still thinking about Daniel.

If I wasn't smart and quick enough he would have played me.

A guy that I considered family was willing to put me through pain. I was still questioning what his visit meant. It could be anything at all.

Didn't he know that talking like that could cause problems for him especially when lots of rooms these days had recorders?

Or was this also among his plans.

Anyways, whatever it was. Henry already had the recording secured and the legal team was reviewing it in case Daniel decides to pull a dirty stunt.

Did Victoria send him or was he working on his own?

I didn't want to believe that Victoria had sent him. Victoria was not as razzed as he was. She was always well laid out, careful and competent.

But it could still have been her. She never does anything directly but you'd know her approach because her fingerprints would be all over it.

It also meant that they were out of options so she was reaching out for what she could. I sighed as I got out of the heart.

Thinking and racking my brain would actually do nothing for me.

Lily was in the living room when I arrived. She was lying on the carpet using her colouring books. The Nanny was seated, reading on the coach, relaxed.

I was happy about that.

After that day at school, Mrs. Park almost had a heart attack and I was afraid she would never resume work again.

Lily looked up when she heard my footsteps.

“You're back early.” She said, since she knew my usual time of returning.

“I finished my meeting early.” I nodded.

She looked at my face longer, just like the normal way she died when she had something to inspect there.

She must have caught me looking at her very detailed colouring of a castle.

“Do you like it?” She asked, obviously expecting a compliment.

“It is very.. very purple.” I struggled with a great description for the picture.

“Of course, castles are purple in colour too.”

I stood there for a long while, watching her. It was just so peaceful and serene.

Lily was just too precious to me and I wasn't going to let anyone, not even Damiel hurt her. She simply brought light into my life.

I imagined Daniel going back to the Pierce house reporting to his mother about how bad the conversation with me went. She must be waiting to hear some good news but would be so disappointed.

They had tried to bet on me but nothing was working. Yes, the tabloids were still there. People were asking why Ethan Blackwell was seeing his step brother's wife. Yes the public had so many questions to ask but that was it.

No one was going to drag me out of my house to answer such questions. And by the way I didn't care about what people said.

Every time the Pierce family would try to use something as a leverage to reach me but they never got to me.

Maybe Victoria was feeling nervous now.

“Brother.” Lily called me.

“You are thinking again.”

“Mmm.” She noticed it again.."What thinking face?" It tried to cover up.

She then demonstrated it to me. There was a slight furrow between her brows, her eyes were focused on nothing in particular and her jaw was set.

It was exactly as accurate as my face was whenever I was worried.

“I'm fine.” I smiled.

“But that is what you always say.” She said, “Color me.” She offered me a pink crayon.

I glared at the crayon. Maybe I should take it and just try to clear my head instead of going to my study to do more thinking and analysing. Maybe I should take some rest today.

I sat down on the carpet beside her and took the crayon. “Which section should I take?”

She pointed to the castle's tallest tower.

"Purple?" I asked.

"What else," she said.

I nodded and went to work.

Henry found me at the study two hours ago. It was 7pm at night and Lily had eventually fallen asleep on the couch. Mrs. Park carried her with a precision that only years of experience would do. She carried her to her room and didn't even flex a muscle.

I came to the study to make some move on the Legal assessment, when someone knocked.

“Come in.”

He entered, closing the door behind him. He was carrying a sheet of paper which he dropped in front of me.

It was a transcript of a message.

“It is a private message received through the Blackwell Corporation's general contact system. According to what we found out, it was sent from a personal email address.”

*My name is Marcus Pierce. I need to speak with Ethan privately. I have information about his mother that he needs to hear. Please pass this to him directly. I will not contact again if he does not wish to meet.*

I read it twice.

Then I pushed it back across the desk toward Henry.

"No," I said.

Henry left the paper where it was. "Young master..”

“I said no and I don't want to hear about it.” I went back to my work. “I have enough work to do instead of listening to a man who couldn't care enough for his child. Why should go when all he would say was that he's sorry.”

First it was Emma, asking for forgiveness, then Sophia wanting to meet me. Then, there is Marcus.

“That might not be the reason why he wants to meet you.”

“I'm sure it is.” I talked about it with Daniel. “His business is failing. He's losing everything and looking for ways to make himself useful. I'm not interested in whatever business he has.”

Henry was quiet.

“Read the second line again.”

I looked at it. “I have information about his mother that he needs to hear.”

“He says needs not wants.” Henry said.

It was already such a hectic day and all I wanted to do was take a shower and have some rest, only if Lily wouldn't mind, only shed let me rest today. “What do you think about today?” “Well? It was well productive. I didn't expect Winters to be straightforward.” I didn't expect him too. I thought and looked out of the window with a smile on my lips. Things were slow but they were working. It was working out more than I expected. Now, all I need to do is concentrate on Lily's birthday party and make sure that everyone is fine. “But you know that men like Winters could be trouble.” Of course, I expected this from Henry. He was too careful, the kind of careful where everyone is a suspect until proven otherwise by strong evidence. “What do you mean?” I indulged him. “He found those emails and didn't say anything. He claims to have deleted it but I thought so.” “Well, whether he deleted it or not, we are going to recover the emails then we can see for ourselves what's really happe

I called Gerald on a Monday morning. It was early but Gerald was already at his desk which did not surprise me. Gerald Thompson was the kind of man who arrived at his desk before the city fully woke up."The counter case," I said when he picked up. "Where does it stand?""We filed it four days ago," Gerald said. "The court has acknowledged receipt. We are waiting for a hearing date." He paused. "The other side will have the opportunity to respond to our filing before the hearing. That will take approximately two to three weeks.""And when they respond what happens?" I asked."They will try to find holes in our counter case," Gerald said. "They will look at everything we submitted and try to argue against it. The hospital competency assessment will be their biggest problem because it is an official document signed by an independent psychiatrist. That is very difficult to argue against." He paused. "However they will try.""How?" I asked."They may argue that the assessment was done six

When I went back to the kitchen, Yemi was still sitting at the table looking over every conversation we'd gone over. She looked up when I came in."She is asleep?" she asked."Within thirty seconds," I said.Yemi smiled. She was still sitting at the table and there was no professional reason for her to still be at the table. I guess she stayed because she didn't want to come off as rude. I understood that so I sat down. Not at the other as I usually do but closer. Just close enough for a human interaction between two people who had a go. I was overthinking this already. "She is going to remember this party for a long time," Yemi said quietly."I hope so," I said."Yemi," I called and she looked up at me. “Thank you.” I said it the same way I usually do when I was truly grateful and meant it. “For agreeing to plan this birthday, for the ideas and for always being with her everyday.” I wasn't sure if I dhouod be thanking her for that since it was her job. “She trusts you and that

With Lily's birthday part coming up and the counter case filed, I knew I had to be extremely careful. We had to be mindful of the people that were to be invited. It was a kids party so the children were going to come in with their parents and it would be strictly an invitation. I was still going to talk to Henry about the security and how tight I want it to be. This birthday party was planned to be small but I knew that reporters would always be reporters. They didn't care about anyone but just themselves. The planning started this evening after I spoke to Lily. Sue must have ran to Yemi to tell her what we concluded. She had called this meeting at the kitchen table. Lily sat between me and Yemi with a notepad she had brought from her room. The notepad had a butterfly on the cover and was purple in colour. She pointed at it and told us specifically that she wanted the theme of her party to be like.My laptop was open and Yemi was looking up some things on the Internet. She said sh

Lily was in her room doing her colouring when I entered the room. She didn't look that excited to see me like she usually did. Her room felt dark even though the curtains were and the afternoon sun was shining through the window. “My princess.” I called her. She tried to smile but it was a forced smile so it didn't reach her eyes. “Baby, why do you look so upset?” At the Pierce family house, I made that smile so many times. Now, seeing that same face on Lily made me feel something heavy in my chest.“Baby, why do you look so upset?” I asked her but she looked down at her colouring book. "I'm not upset," she said."Lily."She was quiet.I walked into the room, moved her stuffed animals to the side and sat very close to her. I waited.I've learned that the only thing to do when she has a sour mood is to be present and patient. Pushing or forcing her to talk would simply make her go silent. She then looked up. “Grandpa used to make a big party for me every year,” She started, her

The day after the counter case was filed, Henry came into my office looking a bit concerned. I looked up from my work expecting him to speak up since he was already in the office but he said nothing, instead he glared at me. “Young master, there is something you must know.” He started. Something I must know?Whenever Henry sounded like this, it was important. He always came into my office with a straight face ready to work but I could see that he was trying to be careful as he spoke to me. “What is it, Henry?” “Lily's birthday is coming up in two weeks.” “I know that.” I said dropping my pen wondering if there was something new about Lily's birthday coming up. “I'm well aware that you know. I'm only here to inform you that I wouldn't be available to assist in the planning of the party.” I closed my document and stared at him. In the few months that I have known Henry Abott, he had never been unavailable for anything. He planned meetings, he managed board meetings and literally
