I waited till the birthday ended. I didn't even have to force myself. It was all natural to me and I was happy how the event turned out.

I looked around for Yemi but it seemed like she didn't show up for the party.

I felt terrible. Like I'd ask her to come and she didn't but I felt really bad when I thought about how Lily would feel about them.

But as I was about to turn away. I saw her. In a purple dress, looking more beautiful than I know.

I wanted to go speak to her, to tell her how beautiful she looked but I hesitated. I wasn't supposed to forget that Yemi was my employee and I shouldn't cross lines.

The party ended by six.

The kids left in small groups with their parents. These children really took a great deal of butterflies and bouncy castles, I found out.

Lily stood at the gate with Mr as we thanked and said goodbye to every single guest individually. I was grateful to their parents.

Most greeted me with a smile on their face while others simply glared at me. They must think that I was below them since I was still young.

Mia was the last to leave. Before she did, Mia whispered something in her ear. Lily nodded like it was an agreement and just then, Mia's mother came in to pick her up.

She greeted each other and that was it. Mia hopped into the back of the car while still waving Lily goodbye.

When the last guest had gone, Lily looked at the garden, the tables, the garlands, the bouncy castle. She looked at them all for a long moment.

I could see the look of satisfaction on her face.

Then she looked up at me.

"It was perfect," she said.

"Yes," I said.

"Even better than grandpa's parties," she said. After she said that, she looked like she shouldn't have made that comment.

"I think he would be glad to hear that," I said.

She considered this. Then she nodded slowly like she had decided to accept it.

"I am very tired now," she announced, yawning.

"I know."

"But I don't want to go to bed yet because then the birthday will be over."

I looked at her. "The birthday doesn't end when you go to sleep," I said. "You wake up tomorrow and you are still six."

She thought about this carefully.

"That is true," she said.

"Come on," I said. I held out my hand.

She took it and we walked back into the garden together. She was satisfied with how everything played out but I wasn't just satisfied, I was happy I could give her the birthday she deeply wanted.

The clean up happened almost immediately.

Henry had made sure to arrange everything before he left. Two staff were clearing tables while others swept the floor.

Emma was still there.

She glared at the garland like she wanted to fall aggressively.

She had not been asked to stay and help with the cleanup. She had simply stayed.

When Lily saw her, she let go of my hands and walked over to Emma. Emma also turned when she heard little footsteps.

Lily looked at the folded garlands on the chair. Then at Emma.

“Hi, Emma.”

“Hi, Lily. Are you going to bed now?”

Lily nodded. "You are being careful with them," she said.

"Of course," Emma said. "You made them.

I watched Lily's movement and wondered if she was being nice or if she truly wanted Emma to be a friend since she was making conversation herself.

"You can come to my next birthday too," she said. "If you want."

Emma looked at her.

Something moved across Emma's face that she did not manage to control and did not try to. Her eyes went slightly bright and she looked down at the garland in her hands for a moment before she looked back up.

"I would like that very much," she said. “But what I'd love most is to visit you every now and then. I mean if that's what you'd like.”

Lily looked up at me like she was waiting for my approval before giving her an answer.

I didn't answer her, I wanted her to make that decision alone.

“Well, I go to school most of the time, so I guess you can visit on some Saturdays if Brother, here is not too busy.”

I tried to hide my smile but Emma must have noticed. She nodded and thanked Lily for even considering her.

Lily nodded like this was settled.

Then she turned around and went to find Yemi which was where she went when she had decided a conversation was complete.

I had been standing a few feet away watching all of this.

Emma looked at me.

I looked at her.

Neither of us said anything. At least I had nothing I wanted to say to her but looking at her, I guess she still had so much to say.

I turned to leave. But she stopped me. “Can I talk to you?” She paused. “Maybe not now, I mean later.”

I nodded agreeing to that without thinking much of it.

Lily had her bath and changed her clothes to the purple pajamas that I had given her. She said she couldn't eat because she was too excited to eat anything.

But I couldn't let her go to bed with food so we sat across from each other at the kitchen table while she ate.

She was quiet, which was not normal for someone like

I sat across from her at the kitchen table while she ate.

She was quieter than usual. Not sad, quiet. Full quiet. The specific quiet of a child who has had a very large day and is now processing it in the way that children process things which is slowly and without rush and from the inside out.

She ate three quarters of the pasta and then put her fork down.

"Brother," she said.

"Yes."

"The butterfly that landed on my finger," she said. "Do you think he knew it was my birthday?"

I thought about this seriously because Lily always knew when you were not thinking seriously about a question.

"I think he chose you specifically," I said. "Out of thirty one children he chose your finger."

She looked at me. "Why?"

I didn't know if Emma got the hang of what I was doing. I mean the fact that I was going to start using her, the way she was using me. Because she started calling me frequently and was always insisting that we meet. She was always looking for an excuse to meet up with me and because I had a plan I accepted most of the times. But not like today, she hadn't said anything about showing up but suddenly, I found out that she was at the gate of the mansion. “What?” That was what came out of my mouth when I heard that from Yemi. She knocked and came into my room around 12 noon just to give me this information. “The guy said she wanted to walk in but he told her to wait according to your instruction.” I took a deep breath. I hadn't expected that Emma would be as desperate as this and I didn't want all these happening in Yemi's presence. I mean I had just started spending time with her and

She pointed at me with her fork. “You are not acting like my brother right now.” “What do you mean? I'm acting like a big brother right now.” I said. “I know you are going to get a stomachache from this.” She narrowed her eyes, then she glanced at Yemi like she needed some help convincing me. “Aunt Yemi.” I never thought Lily was this soft. “Tell him.” “I don't want to be involved in this pancake fight.” Yemi held up both hands. "You are supposed to be on my side," Lily said."I am on the side of no stomachaches," Yemi said, looking away, probably afraid that Lily's charm would work on her if she didn't.Then when Lily saw that she wasn't winning, she looked at Henry."Do not look at me," Henry said without looking up from his cup. It was cold but it made me smile. I glanced back at Lily to see what next she would do. She sat back in her

Today he pulled out a chair and sat down.Lily saw this from the counter and her eyes went wide."Henry is sitting with us," she announced like it was breaking news."I am aware," Henry said."You never sit with us," Lily said."I am sitting now," Henry said.Lily looked at him for a long moment. Then she looked at me. Then she looked at Yemi. Then she got off the counter and came to the table and sat in her own chair with the manner of someone who had decided that today was officially a special occasion.Mrs Park brought the pancakes. They were perfect. Thick and golden and stacked on a large plate in the middle of the table. She had put fruit on the side and syrup in a small jug and butter already melting on the top of the stack.Lily stared at the plate like it was the most beautiful thing she had ever seen."Mrs Park," she said sol

After visiting my mother, I had a bit of strength to do what I had to do. It took me a while to adjust after seeing her but I was glad that I did. We got home as fast as we could and we meant Henry at the door. “What's up?” I asked, my heart suddenly beating fast. I just couldn't believe that there was another problem. He smiled at me in the weird way that he always does.“Why are you smiling, Henry?” Lily asked. I was also shocked to even see Henry smile. I've never seen him smile when there was nothing good happening. He was always serious like he didn't care. “Come on, Henry. Tell us.” Lily was now jumping. I was also curious. We went into the house to find Mrs. Park making some pancakes. “Pancakes?” Lily screamed in excitement. I was also excited for Mr. Park's pancakes too. She was a good cook and it made sense that her pancakes would be delicious. <

The wind moved through the oak trees above us. "I want you to know that I know who you were," I said. "Not just who you were to me. Who you actually were. You were Richard Blackwell's daughter. You were from a family that loved you and searched for you for eleven years after you disappeared. Your father never stopped looking for you. He spent his whole life trying to find you and when he was dying he used his last weeks to find me so that I would have what you should have had." I stopped. Something moved in my chest that I held carefully. "You never knew any of that," I said. "That is the thing I cannot fix. You lived your whole life not knowing that you were wanted. Not knowing that you had a name that mattered and a father who was looking for you and a family that had been missing you since the day you disappeared." I paused. "You cleaned their floors and cooked their food and you never

I decided that I was going to visit my mum's cementation today. I had literally had the best time with Yemi on Sunday and that same evening, I heard the most heartbreaking news. Victoria was leaving. I knew that a lot of people would expect her to go to another country but not me. There was no way Victoria was going to leave her home because I was a threat?I just needed to clear my head, before anything else. Things were still uncertain from how it looked. I didn't know what exactly Victoria would be doing. For the past few days, even before dinner, I had been feeling something weird so I decided that maybe all I needed to do was see my mum. It wasn't fear or anxiety, the way I knew it. What I was feeling was more quiet, more uncertain, like a feeling you get when everything is not fine. I woke up the next morning, anxious. I was glad it was 5am so I got up and went downstairs knowing I was not going back to sleep. The house was very quiet. I just stood and took sips of water a
