Clark’s POV
I poured soy sauce on my bread and nodded gently. “Yeah, I have been hurt so many times, and now?”. I sucked in a deep breath, then smiled “I've become numb. Is that why you’re sad? Someone broke your heart?” I questioned. “What?!” She looked up, drying her tears. “I said, is that why you’re sad, did someone break your heart?” I repeated. She gave me a strange look, then nodded. “Well, I don’t see you that way. If I did, you wouldn’t have helped me.” I glanced at my now-empty plate. “Can I get more bread, please?” She passed hers to me without a word. “I hate myself sometimes,” she muttered, gently drying her tears. “I get deceived. I see the signs… yet I keep going back.” She said, but I didn't seem to look at her. I only focused on my meal, and when I was finally done, I glanced at again, then calmly said, “Is it okay to lend me some cash?” . She looked at me shocked, then rolled her eyes. “I kind of need to get some decent clothes,” I added with a shrug. She took in a deep breath, managed to smile, then let out a long sigh, and looked at me like I was the most heartless person alive. “Were you even listening to my story?” she asked, disappointed. “I was. I just… I have no contributions. Just do yo—.” “Such a waste,” she blurted out, then stood up and angrily left. I guess I was too cold. For the first time in thirteen years, I actually felt bad for my actions. “But we all get sad, right? I mean, that is why we are humans” I assured myself. It’s not like I’m her responsibility or anything. But even at that, I still couldn’t shake the guilt off. I managed to drag myself to the balcony, there she was, leaning against the rail. I stood beside her, but before I could say a word, she pulled out some cash and handed it to me. “That’s all I’ve got,” she said. Gently, I pushed her hand back. “That’s not why I came.” I said, then she turned to look at me confused. Her brows knitted together, like she was expecting something worse. “Why then did you come?” she mumbled. “I didn’t know how to react to your story,” I said, then she smiled, shook her head, about to walk away. “But I figured it out. And… I came to give some advice.” I said, before she got to the entrance. “Sorry”. I whispered, then she turned toward me, a small smile playing on her lips. “What do you have to say, I'm all ears.” She said, taking a step closer. “Ummm” I scratched my head a little confused, then with a deep breath, I continued. “Um… I just want to say you’re a good person. And sometimes, life puts us in front of the wrong people—ungrateful ones. But don’t let them change you. No one is good, but we all picture ourselves good” She smiled, then gave a dry chuckle. “Mmm, nice. But who told you I’m a good person? You’ve only known me for a day.” Her question was becoming intriguing. “A day is enough to understand someone’s energy.” I said, nodding my head like I dropped a jam. There was a brief silence. Then she broke the silence with a daring question. “Why were you imprisoned?” My throat tightened. For a moment, I thought I imagined it. But I hadn’t. The thought of explaining why I was imprisoned to people. I thought I was in charge, I could answer and not answer, but now? I feel I'm entitled to explaining myself to others. “Rape,” the word escaped my mouth after a brief silence. Her eyes widened in shock. “Rape?!” I looked away, feeling the heat of shame rise in my chest. “I don’t believe you,” she said, then I became even more surprised. “Why? I was found guilt”. I persuaded, yet she shock her head and repeated the same word “I don't believe you” “Maybe when you become my next victim, you will,” I muttered, half in sarcasm, half in bitterness. She didn’t look away. She kept staring at me, silent. I wondered why her gaze was so daring. “I’m not scared of you,” she finally said, with a relieved breath. She’s definitely scared, I thought. She’s just pretending not to be. “If I were you,” I said slowly, “I’d be scared.” “If you wanted to rape me, you would’ve done it already,” she said, sounding even more confident, then she came closer, caressed my jaw, while staring deep into my eyes. I swallowed hard, almost uncomfortable. “Why are you staring at me like that?” I asked, suddenly nervous under her gaze. “I’m a psychologist,” she said, grinning. “And I know you’re lying.” She whispered, then let go, while stepping away. “Lying?” I blinked. “What do you mean?” I said confused. “You didn’t do it,” she said, walking towards the railing. “Your eyes… they say something different from your mouth. You didn’t rape her.” I stared at her in disbelief. How could she see that? “You’re in pain. Just like me—Numb,” she added, then turned back to face me. “Was she your girlfriend?” I smiled faintly and nodded. “I see. That’s why you hate women, why you’ve erased the words ‘sorry’ and ‘thank you’ from your vocabulary?” She chuckled bitterly. “You know,” she continued, “My sister went through something similar. She was raped by her boyfriend. I wasn’t in town when it happened… but it broke me. I couldn’t understand it. He said he loved her, yet he forced himself on her just because she wanted to wait until marriage.” “Not every story is true. Not every guy is good,” I chipped in, joining her on the rail. “What do you mean?” She said. “Your sister could be lying. And even if she wasn’t, not every guy is decent. Maybe she met a beast.” “Yeah, maybe… but my sister has never lied to me,” she said with a soft smile. “Ow! Cool. I never trust anyone though” I said, then noticed the smile on her face. “Why are you smiling?” I asked. “I was just wondering if the case was vice versa, you probably became the victim, perhaps your girlfriend would be the rapist,” she said, then we both started to laugh. “You’ve got a weird imagination,” I said, still laughing at her joke. “You see? I made you laugh. You’re even more handsome when you smile,” she whispered. I wanted to tell her the same — that she was the most beautiful girl I have seen. But my pride got in the way. Or maybe I just didn’t want her to think I was falling for her. “No thank you? Guess I'll just have to cope wi—” “Thank you” I interrupted, flashing a smile. “Tell me… who broke your heart?” I asked. Then she went still. Her laughter faded. Her smile dissolved. “Your boyfriend?” I asked. “Did he rape you too?” I teased, trying to lift the mood. She laughed faintly, then shook her head. “Nah, not at all,” she said. “It was my uncle. He killed my parents… and got my brother imprisoned for the murder.” “That's no good news then. Was that why you had a nightmare last night?”. I said. She turned sharply and narrowed her brows at me. “Nightmare?”. She said shocked, then shook her head in disbelief. “I guess I do a lot of damn things when I sleep”. She laughed. “Sort of, you sounded like one that was taunted”. I said, then she became sad again. “Yeah, I keep seeing him in my dream”. She mumbled. “Don't worry, we'll take care of this”. I assured. “We?! Nah, you don't have to get yourself involved. It's my problem, I should face it”. She said, a bit relieved. “Can I reach the roof top from here?”. I mumbled, looking up to the sky, then she gave me a weird look. “Roof top?”. She said shocked, widening her eyes in disbelief. “Well, you can get to the roof top, but I have never been there. I kinda have acrophobia”. “What's that?”. I narrowed my eyes confused. “Fear of height”. She replied, walking ahead of me. “Should I follow you?”. I let out, then she paused, and smiled at me. “Sure”. She winked. I kind of admired her for a few minutes. She didn't stop to gist me, until we got to the roof top. The way she casually smiled at me, somehow I felt alive. I knew it was all fun when I had my buddies with me in the prison, but—something feels different when I'm around her. “Hey, see…” she said, pointing at the sky “The stars are so beautiful from here. Wow! This feels so good”. She let out excitedly. I watched her play, laughed, and I wanted to tell her she was just as pretty as the star, but No! I couldn't, she already hates me. “You know I kinda like it here with you. I sort of feel a little safe around you”. She said, pulling some candy from her pocket. “Here, have some” “Thanks”. I whispered, grabbing it from her. “Since Mum and Dad died, it's been so lonely, I had to move out from our old apartment, just go get a memory of them off my head. I really love my parents you know” She breathed out. I didn't say a word, maybe, because I had nothing in mind. Somehow I felt relieved up here, the breeze was so cozy, I couldn't stop glaring at the stars. Back in the prisons, one of my favorite activities was staring at it for hours, hoping I could touch it one day or possibly watch it rise, with the very woman I love and who loves me too. “Have you tried reaching out to her?”. Bella's voice disrupted, as I turned to face her, with my narrowed brows. “Who is that?”. I said, quite confused. “Who else, your girlfriend?” she teased. I don't know why, but I kind of became really pissed about that question. “I lost my phone, maybe you could lend me yours to give her a call” I said after a deep breath, then noticed the sudden change of her expression. “What?! You really do want to call her, after everything she's done? Oh wow! Dude, you've got to be some mother mary”. I almost laughed at her frustration, didn't believe a mere response like that could stir her up. “Yeah, I kind of still love her. What do you mean by everything she's done though?” I mumbled. “You've got to quit the pretense, I know you didn't rape her”. She hissed, rolling her eyes like she was some witness to the incident or something. “Yo, who is that?”. I let out, watching out, as this dude approached the building. She looked down, then let out a long hiss. “Your Ex?”. I said, but she said no word. “Give me a minute”. She said, and angrily left. Minutes later, she was outside, talking with the dude. He didn't know I was watching, even though I could barely hear their conversation, but somehow, I knew Isabella wasn't happy. “Who is he and what does he want?”. I said to myself, while closely observing him. And just then, My nigga tried to kiss her. Damn! I felt my chest tighten, I didn't want to disrupt, since it was kinda of a boyfriend and girlfriend thing. But when I tried to look away, I noticed Isabella didn't want to be kissed, she was actually dodging, and when I tried to understand the situation, he hit her and she fell. I knew it wasn't my business, but I wasn't going to fold my hands and watch some dude beat her up. Immediately, I jumped through the stairs. I could hear the voices now, the dude had asked a question as I came closer. “you've got someone with you now?”. But before she could say another word, I stormed out of the room and landed a punch on his face. “What the heck? You called some dude for me. Wow! You've got some nerves bitch. What next? You are gonna call the cops?” he ranted, while walking away from us, I didn't look away from him, not until he was some steps away. “Are you hurt?”. I whispered, gazing at Isabella's innocent face, I slowly reached out for her face. One could have thought I was hypnotized, from the way I kept staring at her, until she pulled my hands away from her face. “It's no big deal, I'm fine”. She said, clearing her throat, then stood up from the floor. “Who was that?”. I said, but she only smiled at me. “Thanks for saving me”. She said, trying to walk away. “You are afraid of me, aren't you?” I whispered, then she paused. “I don't trust you enough to share my secrets with you, besides, you hardly share yours, why should I detail you on every thing that goes on in my life”. She said, taking a leap inside. I couldn't continue with her. I just stayed back, reflecting on everything that happened, including her words.. Somehow, I felt she was right, but being secretive about such a guy?! Well, I guess she was ready to risk it. Possibly get raped for real, before she can report the issue to the police. “Are you going to come inside or not?”. Her tiny voice echoed behind me, before I looked up to see her yet innocent looking face. But I didn't flinch, I maintained my space, not until a hand rested on my shoulder. “I'm sorry, thanks for saving me, but can you come inside now, it isn't safe out here”. She pleaded. “I'm fine out here”. I whispered, then she shook her head and grabbed my hands. “I'm sorry. That— I— can we talk about him some other time, I don't like it when I talk about him, I kinda feel stupid when I tell the story”. She whispered, almost in tears. “What's bothering you? I know I may not be the best person to talk things out with, but… I know I can try, but I don't like him. So, tell me now, Who is he? Except you want me to leave”. I toned frustrated, then lowered my head and continued “I can't stay with someone I know nothing about” “You never said that the first day you came. This should be the longest sentence you've said since you moved in with me”. She tried to tease me, but I wasn't giving her the energy. “Isabella Santiago, who the heck was that dude? What does he want”. I said coldly, pulling her hands away, and stepping back. After minutes of deep silence, she slipped down to the floor with a deep breath. “Come sit beside me, if you really want me to tell you about him”. She whispered, then I took a step closer and sat beside her.

Clark's POV“VICTORIA?!“ I spelled out with a slight grin.”Yes, Victoria. She mumbled, then directed her hands towards my couch.“Can you please sit?”. She demanded, then I smiled and went ahead to sit down.“What's her crime? Can I serve her punishment in place of her?“ She said, then I smiled again.“You do believe I'm working for your uncle, right?”. I said, but she remained still.“How do you expect me to free her and have you…”“I know you don't work for him. I don't even think you are working for anyone”. She snapped.Surprised, I began to nod slowly.“Quite impressive” I thought, then asked her to sit on the mattress, while facing me.“Why the sudden change of belief?”. I questioned, then she breathed out and mumbled.“I have observed you enough to notice you are not working for him. I know you are on a personal revenge on Victoria, what you want with me, is what I don't really know. But I'm even more certain, meeting me after Victoria was a complete coincidence”Her tone, th

TWO NIGHT'S, ONE SHIFT
Clark's POVI kept staring at her—the tears that rolled, the little smile she tried to pretend with. The weariness in her face—I could… maybe, kind of feel her pain.“My un—cle—” she stuttered.“Your uncle? You mean that little dude is your uncle?” I mumbled, confused. But she smiled, then shook her head.“Not at all. My uncle sold me to him.”God! I was heartbroken. How could one’s uncle do something so evil like that?“Why?!” I let out confused, watching her eyes get clouded with tears again.“What else, if not for his selfish interest?” she cried, then paused. “Before I can get freed, I’ll have to pay seventy thousand dollars.”Our eyes met at the mention of that. I was mute, then her smile came.“Now that you’ve heard the story, can we now get inside?” she demanded, standing up from where she sat.“Sure,” I mumbled, still shocked, taking a step after her.Inside, I didn’t say a word to her. It was just like yesterday—we became strangers again. I’m sure she was worried. I didn’t ea
