Their conversation was attracting attention. Several trainees who'd been entering the facility stopped to watch. More gathered, drawn by the spectacle of someone being publicly humiliated.

"Is that the new janitor?" one trainee asked.

"Looks like it," another replied. "Poor bastard. Though from the sounds of it, he deserves whatever he's getting."

"What's his story?" a third asked.

"Some nobody who thought he could compete in the Twin Towers," Ethan explained loudly, making sure everyone could hear. "Made it pretty far actually—Floor Seventy-Six—before his courage failed and he quit like the pathetic coward he is!"

The crowd laughed. More trainees were gathering now, forming a semi-circle around Alexander.

"A quitter AND a janitor?" someone called out. "That's a double failure!"

"Triple failure if you count his divorce!" another added.
