The silence that followed lasted long enough that Noah could hear his own pulse in his ears, could feel the pendant against his chest go still and cold in a way it hadn't since the ruins.

"That's not possible," Lyra said, and the crack in her voice told Noah she didn't fully believe her own denial even as she made it. "My family has held the compact's first seat for generations. We've enforced it. We've protected it. If we'd been the ones to break it in the first place, why would we spend four hundred years defending the very thing our own betrayal made necessary."

"Guilt makes excellent architects," Marisol said, not unkindly, though the words landed like a blow regardless. "Who better to guard a secret than the House with the most to lose if it ever came out? Your family didn't just survive the fall of House Kane, girl. Your family built an entire empire on making sure nobody ever asked the right questions about it."

Dorren leaned forward, his old soldier's face grave. "I served House Kane's guard for six years before the fall. I remember the political maneuvering in the seasons leading up to that night, the alliances forming and dissolving, the particular tension between the royal house and the Ashbourne line over territorial rights that predated the compact by at least a decade. It was never a secret that House Ashbourne resented playing second to a crown they considered increasingly weak. I didn't understand, at the time, what that resentment might eventually cost."

"You're certain," Noah said, forcing himself to focus past the roaring in his own ears, aware that whatever Lyra was feeling right now deserved space he couldn't fully give her yet. "This fabric, this sigil. There's no chance it belonged to someone else, someone using a false mark."

"I was seven years old and I watched my mother burn," Marisol said, and there was nothing gentle left in her voice now. "I've spent thirty years making sure I never mistake that sigil for anything else, because getting it wrong meant blaming the wrong people for what happened to everyone I loved. I am not wrong."

Lyra had gone very still, the particular stillness Noah recognized now as the shape she took when the ground beneath her had shifted too fast for her body to catch up. "My father," she said slowly. "He briefed me on this himself. He told me the story of House Kane's fall the same way he's told it to me my entire life. If our House was responsible, he'd have to know. He'd have to have always known."

"Or he doesn't," Noah said quietly, because it felt important to offer her something other than certainty of the worst. "Four hundred years is a long time. Maybe whatever happened in that hall isn't common knowledge even within your own House. Maybe it's a secret buried deep enough that only a few people at the very top have ever carried the weight of it."

"That's not comforting," Lyra said, though something in her posture eased slightly at the possibility. "Either my father is the kind of man who'd send his own daughter to kill an innocent boy to protect a lie his family built four centuries ago, or he genuinely doesn't know what his own bloodline did, which means someone above even him has been keeping that secret for longer than anyone alive today has been breathing."

NEW QUEST AVAILABLE: Confirm Ashbourne Complicity.

Noah closed the panel before it could finish rendering, some instinct telling him this wasn't a moment for the System's clinical bookkeeping. He watched Lyra instead, watched her wrestle visibly with an inheritance of guilt she'd done nothing to earn and couldn't simply set down now that she'd picked it up.

"Whatever this means," he said, "it doesn't have to mean what you're afraid it means. Not about you."

"You don't know that."

"No," Noah admitted. "But I know what it's like to spend your whole life being told you're worth exactly what your circumstances say you're worth, and I know that's a lie every single time someone tries to tell it to me. I'm not going to hand you the same lie just because it's easier."

Lyra looked at him for a long moment, something raw and unguarded passing behind her eyes before she managed to school it back into something steadier. "That's a dangerous thing to say to someone who was sent to kill you."

"You didn't kill me," Noah said. "Even before tonight. Even before any of this. I think that tells us more about who you actually are than any sigil on any piece of fabric ever could."

Marisol watched the exchange with the careful attention of someone cataloguing something she hadn't expected to witness, and when she finally spoke again, her voice had softened into something closer to cautious hope.

"If you're both willing to follow where this leads," she said, "there's more I can show you. But you need to understand, once you start pulling this particular thread, there's no putting it back. The compact your father's House has enforced for four centuries exists to keep exactly this truth buried. If it comes out, it doesn't just endanger you." Her eyes moved to Lyra. "It could bring down everything your family has built."

Toby, who had been quiet through most of the heavier exchange, spoke up with the particular boldness of the young. "It could also finally give us justice. Isn't that worth something too?"

"Justice and destruction aren't always the same thing," Yasmin said quietly, "even when they look identical from the outside."

Lyra's jaw set, the fear in her expression giving way, slowly, to something harder and more resolved. "Then it's already too late to stop pulling."

  • CHAPTER 20: THE FIRST ALLIANCE

Sable returned as the night wore toward its coldest hour, slipping back through the narrow door with the particular quiet of someone who'd been listening at its edge and had heard enough to know the conversation inside had changed everything."There's more you need to know before you decide what to do with what Marisol's shown you," she said, setting a fresh set of documents on the table, these ones newer, their edges crisp rather than brittle with age. "While you've been down here uncovering four-hundred-year-old secrets, the present has kept moving. Alpha Voss has sent a formal offer through back channels. She wants a meeting. Neutral ground, her terms, an alliance discussion rather than an assassination attempt.""You don't trust it," Noah said, reading the tension in Sable's posture before she'd finished speaking."I don't trust anyone offering an alliance to someone they tried to kill three days ago without expecting something significant in return." Sable crossed her arms. "But

  • CHAPTER 18: THOSE WHO REMEMBERED

The room beyond the door was small, low-ceilinged, lit by lanterns that burned with the same faint silver quality Noah had seen in his vision of the ruined hall, and it took him a moment to understand why that detail mattered.Three other figures sat around the table besides the woman closest to the door, and Noah's newly sharpened senses cataloged them without conscious effort. An older man near the back, his posture carrying the particular rigidity of someone who had once served in a formal capacity, perhaps a guard or soldier, whose eyes tracked Noah's every movement with professional wariness rather than open hostility. A younger woman closer to Lyra's age, dark-eyed and watchful, a hand resting near a blade at her hip in a way that suggested she trusted the room's occupants exactly as far as necessary and not an inch further. And a third figure, younger still, barely more than a boy, who stared at Noah with an expression somewhere between fear and desperate hope, the particular l

  • CHAPTER 17: THE SILENT WARNING

The footsteps belonged to Sable, breathless in a way Noah had never seen from her, her usual unbothered composure replaced with something sharper and far more urgent."You need to move," she said, not bothering with greeting, her eyes flicking once toward Lyra with an assessment Noah couldn't quite read. "Both of you. Now.""What happened." Noah was already moving toward her, the pendant's warmth fading as his attention snapped fully into the present."Word's spreading faster than I expected. Alpha Voss knows what happened between you and her son, and instead of doing the smart thing and staying quiet about it, she's been making calls." Sable's jaw tightened. "There's a faction of the Twelve that wants you found and neutralized before this becomes a war nobody can win cleanly, and there's another faction, smaller but louder by the hour, that wants to reach you first and offer an alliance instead. Either way, people are actively looking, and this ruin isn't as forgotten as I led you to

  • CHAPTER 16: THE HUNTER WHO STAYED

Lyra had followed him without entirely deciding to.It had started as due diligence, or that was the story she'd told herself somewhere around the third day of trailing Sable's information network instead of reporting back to her father with anything useful. She told herself she needed to understand the threat before she could responsibly assess it. She told herself a great many things over those three days, most of them technically true and none of them the actual reason her feet had carried her to the mouth of a ruin nobody sane visited alone. She found him kneeling before a shattered dais in a hall that made her hunter training scream every warning it had learned about spaces soaked in old, unresolved violence."You shouldn't be here," she said, and her voice came out rougher than she intended, thick with something that wasn't quite fear and wasn't quite the caution she was supposed to feel standing this close to a confirmed royal heir in a place built for exactly his bloodline. No

  • CHAPTER 15: RUINS AND ASHES

The location came to Noah the way most useful things had come to him lately, through Sable, delivered with the particular bluntness of someone who charged for information and preferred not to waste time softening it."There's a place in the old quarter," she said, sliding a hand-drawn map across her counter, "that used to be marked on official maps four hundred years ago and hasn't been marked on anything since. Locals call it the Ashfall Ruins. Nobody goes there. Not because it's forbidden, exactly. More because everyone who's tried has come back saying the place doesn't want visitors.""And you think it's connected to House Kane.""I think a pendant that shows you visions of a woman in a stone hall probably came from somewhere real," Sable said. "And I think a hall like the one you described doesn't just disappear. It gets buried, or hidden, or cursed enough that people stop looking for it." She tapped the map. "If your family's fall left any physical trace in this city, that's wher
