After what felt like eternity,Dave finally got back to the office and laid his head tirelessly on the desk.
The boss, who was always fond of insulting Dave, came out of his office and threw Dave's monthly salary at him.He stared at him with a smirk and cleared his throat."Take this to hold your breath; I've noticed that you're not active with the delivery work. I do not want to see you near my company again.""But sir..." "Shhhhhh, shut up before I take the money back from you." The manager interrupted Dave's speech and asked him to leave."100$?" Dave screamed and looked at the money. "How much do you think I could give?" The manager shouted at him with a snarl. "At least half the payment will be okay; this is not enough." Dave said it in a worried way and took a look at the money in his hands one more time. "This is the last time I'm saying this. Get lost from my sight.". The manager yelled at Dave, and he walked away with the 10 dollars in his hands. He had been delivering items from door to door since the morning, and that was the only work he could do to get something for himself. Today happens to be Amelia's 30th birthday, and the Smith family was going to get a high guest, which Dave was never to be classified under. Upon noticing this, Dave decided to surprise Amelia and her family by getting her something adorable. The money he held in his hands discouraged him, but he still managed to get something for his wife. "I hope this makes her happy because this is all I could earn to buy something for my wife." Dave murmured to himself, and with his tattered clothes,he adjusted himself and walked briskly on the streets of Madrid back to his mother-in-law's house. The laughter and noise that were heard from the building made Dave realize that the birthday party had already started. Dave hurried with his footsteps and barged into the second entrance to his room when he met his mother-in-law standing with a stern look. Mom, please, can you give me space so I can pass?" Madam Charlotte's face twisted into a mask of fury, her eyes narrowing. "How dare you speak to me like that, you insolent little worm!" Dave straightened his posture; his voice was firm. "I may be small in stature, but I refuse to let anyone belittle me anymore. I deserve to be treated as a human being, with dignity and kindness." Madam Charlotte's fury intensified, her voice sharp as a blade. "You will pay for your defiance, mark my words. You'll regret crossing me." With that, Dave stood tall, a flicker of defiance burning in his eyes. He held his ground, refusing to be broken by the insults and mistreatment any longer. The room was heavy with tension, with the repercussions of Dave's boldness hanging in the air. "Make sure you wash the dishes before you get to the room. I don't want to see the kitchen in a mess". Madam Charlotte said angrily. Dave nodded in vain, and as he was about to take his third step, Madam Charlotte called him back with a yell. "Call my daughter for me; I have something important to discuss with her. You may leave now." She added a smirk, taking a deep breath as she turned back to her guests. Dave had no choice but to obey every instruction because he needed money to pay his dad's hospital bills. As he approached their room door, he instinctively dashed into the room to find Amelia's tongue buried in the mouth of another man in a passionate kiss, a man that he had never seen before. "What is going on here?" He asked, seething with rage. What he was seeing pierced his heart like a sharp knife. Amelia disentangled herself from the man immediately after she heard his voice, but there was not an ounce of remorse in her expression. "What does it look like?" She asked him rhetorically. Dave was taken aback. He was supposed to be the angry one here, and she was supposed to sound remorseful. "I'm having fun with my man!" She yelled. Dave stood there stunned and watched his wife, who was comfortable and not ashamed. "How could you do this when we are married?" He questioned Amelia while twisting his lips. "Dave, you're not the one to tell me what to do; bedside, you don't cater for me.'' Amelia said this with a smirk and turned back to Nelson on the bed. "Amelia I'm your husband. I don't have enough, but at least I've got something to wish you this time." "Oh! Cut that crap. You are just a servant here, not my husband," Amelia shot back angrily. Dave caught her arm tightly in anger and tried to pull her away from Nelson. "You are a shameless human with no dignity." He clenched his teeth and was furious that his respect and love for his wife had been turned into disgust and hatred. Amelia raised her hand and landed a tight slap on Dave's face. "How dare you disrespect me? Don't forget you are feeding on our leftover foods." She flared her nostrils and pushed Dave away from her. "Oh baby! Please calm down," Nelson said, rubbing Amelia's back in front of Dave's face. He was enjoying the insults that Dave was getting from Amelia. "I'm here to cheer you up," Nelson said, kissing her on the lips. He turned his face toward Dave with an evil smirk. "Come on, man, You are a useless husband that can't satisfy his wife, neither with her needs nor with your own." I am the man she wants to touch her body and complete her desires," Nelson mocked Dave while boasting himself. "Yes baby. You are right," Amelia said, biting her lips seductively. Dave listened to the hurtful words and stared at the gift he was about to present to Amelia. "Just get lost from here now. Don't forget to lock the door," Nelson chuckled. He couldn't hold back from Amelia's invitation, so he continued to do what he felt like doing. Dave couldn't control his anger. Without uttering an additional word, he dashed out of the room after slamming the door. Feeling a mix of anger, betrayal, and heartbreak, Dave stormed off to his place, needing a moment to process the shock of what he had just witnessed. Dave could hear the faint sounds of laughter and conversation coming from the living room. It seemed that the party his mother-in-law was hosting was still in full swing. The weight of his father's medical bills still pressed heavily on him, but at that moment, all he could focus on was the pain in his heart. He replayed the scene over and over in his mind, the image of his wife with another man searing into his memory. The realization that his marriage was built on lies and deception shattered him. He had been living behind a facade, oblivious to the truth that lay behind closed doors. As the sounds of the party downstairs continued to drift into his room, Dave couldn't help but feel a surge of anger toward his mother-in-law. Madam Charlotte's callousness and lack of consideration for his feelings had only added insult to injury. He wondered how long she had known about her daughter's infidelity and if she had played any part in it. "Where am I even going to live? I have nowhere to go." Dave muttered to himself when he considered leaving the house and finding somewhere else to stay. As he walked out of the living room,he stared at the package he had wanted to present to Amelia and dumped it in the bin. He breathed into his pounded heart and dashed into the living hall when Madam Charlotte called out his name.
