Chapter 23: THE BASEL PROTOCOL
Three hours after the explosion, the wreck had cooled into grey smoke and the fog had gone the color of dishwater.Zale lay on the ledge with his back against a wet boulder and counted the cutter's lights. It had stopped searching. It sat a kilometer off, waiting for something that would not come. Dawn was an hour away and nothing in him could have run to meet it.The cold had gone past pain into something flat and heavy. His left side throbbed in a deep slow beat, the dressing soaked through, and each breath pulled it open a little more. Beside him Mara sat with her knees drawn up and her jaw locked so hard that her teeth ground, a thin dry sound under the surf."Four minutes," she said. Her voice was gravel. "You said four.""Three now."The sound came out of the fog before the shape did. A diesel, small, old, throttled almost to nothing. A flat-bottomed fishing boat nosed out of the grey with its lights dead and a man at the tiller, hunched in oilskins, ancient, one eye gone milky.
Chapter 22: THE LATITUDE OF GAPS
Forty minutes out, the Adriatic stopped being a bay and became a sea.The patrol boat came through the mouth of Boka at thirty-eight knots with the diesels howling, and the swell met it like a wall. Spray came over the bow in sheets. It hit the wheelhouse glass with a sound like thrown gravel and ran down in grey ropes, and the sky above it was the color of wet slate, thick with a low cloud that had swallowed the last of the stars and had not yet agreed to be morning. Black water. Black air. A bleak grey line where the two met.Zale stood braced at the helm with his boots wide. Salt crusted his lips. Each time the hull slammed into a trough the shock went up through his legs and into the left side of his body, and the hole under his ribs answered with a long, hot ache that spread across the hip and down the thigh. Cloth had stuck to it. Blood had dried, then cracked, then run again. The diesels' vibration settled in the fillings of his teeth. A graze, he had told himself. But the cold
Chapter 21: THE LAST LEDGER LINE
Nobody in the library breathed. The wind came through the shattered window and moved the flame in the grate, and the whole room leaned with it, shadows swinging across the spines of ten thousand books. Rain ticked on the sill. Broken glass glittered in the rug, and beside it, face down, Gerald's blood had stopped spreading.Zale kept the sights on the center of the chair.Seven rounds. Six meters. His arm did not shake. His eyes did not leave her, and everything else in the room came to him through the edges of them. The two guards at the door, rifles half raised, waiting on a word nobody had spoken. Mara at his left shoulder, a warm point of breathing. And the Colonel.Voss had not moved his feet. He stood in a loose crouch beside the fireplace with the long suppressor held low against his thigh, and his right forefinger lay along the frame, outside the trigger guard. It was a small thing. A discipline. Zale watched it the way he had learned to watch a gate latch."You are wondering
Chapter 20: THE CONVERGENCE OF KAMELIJA
Zale throttled back at the mouth of the inlet and let the boat coast. The engines dropped to a mutter, then to nothing, and the hull slid on through the fog on its own weight with only the whisper of water along the keel. No wind. No gulls. The air tasted of salt and pine resin and cold stone. The dark before dawn lay over Perast like a hand, and the only sound in it was the drip of salt-soaked pine branches onto stone. He turned the bow into a notch in the cliff, a cove no wider than a tennis court. A pier of black stone jutted from the rock, its pilings crusted white with salt and furred with weed. Above it a staircase climbed in switchbacks through the pines to a long limestone wall. Behind the wall, a roofline. A bell tower, faint against a sky that had not yet decided to be gray.*Villa Kamelija.*He killed the instrument lights, tied off to a ring in the pier, and went to the glass.Three men on the wall. Hooded, rifles slung, walking the parapet in the same eleven-meter spacing
Chapter 19: THE CONCRETE THROAT
The shaft swallowed him whole and the world above it screamed.Zale hit the sheet metal on his chest and slid, boots first, then the dark closed over his head and the roar of the breach stopped as if a door had slammed. Behind him, a long metal throat. Ahead, Mara's boots, scraping. Above and behind, in the cage they had just left, the guns began.Automatic fire. Not at them. At the place they had been. Rounds chewed the archive cabinets and tore the steel mesh to ribbons, and some of them found the lip of the duct and rang off it, and every ring threw a spray of orange sparks down the pipe like a handful of thrown embers. The sparks lit the walls for a half second. Rusted seams. Dust in the air. Mara's soaked back, shaking, six feet ahead."Crawl," he said. She crawled. The pipe was thirty inches square. Made for cooling air and a man with a wrench, it forced them onto elbows and knees with their heads bowed and their shoulders scraping both walls. Zale dragged himself forward with h
Chapter 18: THE ZURICH MATRIX
The door opened on its own weight and Zale went through it low.The warehouse breathed around him. Cold. A hum of fans, a faint chemical sweetness of gun oil, and the wet squelch of his own boots. Nothing in his head but the count.*Guard one. Central aisle. Back half turned.*Twelve meters. The man walked a slow oval between the racks, rifle across his chest, and every fourth step his head turned to the left to check the east door. Zale timed it. Three steps. Turn.He came out of the dark behind him on the fourth. Two rounds. The suppressed pistol coughed twice, flat and small, nothing the fans could not swallow. The man's head snapped forward. His knees went. Zale caught the carbine by its sling before it touched concrete and lowered the body between two crates like a man putting down luggage.*Guard two. East door.*Forty meters. He had the angle before he moved: the second man stood with his back against the steel, thumbs hooked in his vest, eyes on the dark corner beyond the rack
