Gregory stared at Alice, his mind spiraling. The blood type report sat on the table like an accusation, but as he looked at his wife's face, doubt crept in like fog. Could the hospital have made a mistake? Was it possible that all of this was some kind of medical error?

His hands felt weak.

Alice's expression softened as she watched the certainty drain from his face. She slowly moved toward him, her movements gentle and deliberate. When she reached him, she wrapped her arms around his waist from behind and pressed her forehead against his back. Her touch was warm, tender, apologetic in a way words couldn't be.

"I'm sorry," she whispered against his shoulder blade, her voice small and vulnerable. "You're right. I made a mistake with Robert . I should have been more careful about how things looked. But I promise you, there was nothing romantic about it. Nothing."

Her arms tightened around him slightly, and Gregory felt his anger beginning to dissolve like sugar in water. Maybe he had been too quick to judge.

Maybe he was letting paranoia poison something that could still be salvaged.

His hand came up and covered hers, and his rigid shoulders began to relax.

Then Alice's phone rang.

The sound shattered the moment. Gregory's entire body went rigid again, and he pulled away from her embrace. His eyes were suddenly hard, cold, fixed on the phone vibrating on the nightstand. He didn't say anything. He simply looked at her and gave her a slight nod, a command disguised as permission.

Alice hesitated, biting her lower lip. She reached for the phone slowly, as if moving through water. When she brought it to her ear, her voice came out cautious and uncertain.

"Hello?"

Robert's voice came through the speaker with practiced charm, smooth as silk and twice as deceptive. His tone was gentle, almost concerned, the voice of someone who genuinely cared.

"Alice, I just wanted to make sure you were alright. That whole situation at the restaurant was completely unnecessary and frankly embarrassing," he said smoothly, his words dripping with false concern. "I'm sure Gregory will come to his senses eventually. It was all just a misunderstanding. These kinds of things happen all the time in business. It won't affect our future cooperation at all."

Alice's entire body relaxed visibly. Her shoulders dropped, and she exhaled in relief. The tension drained from her face, and she nodded even though Robert couldn't see her.

"You're right. Thank you for understanding, Robert . I was so worried," she said softly, her voice trembling slightly with the aftermath of stress. "I'm sorry about everything. I'll make sure this doesn't happen again."

"Don't worry about it at all," Robert replied, his voice warm and reassuring. "Everything will be fine. Just take care of yourself."

Alice hung up the phone and turned to face Gregory, her expression transformed. Relief had replaced fear, and a tentative smile appeared on her face.

"See? It was all just a misunderstanding," she said, reaching for his hand. Her fingers intertwined with his, and she squeezed gently. "There's nothing between us. He was just being professional and kind. I think I overreacted and so did you."

Gregory looked at her, and doubt crashed over him like a wave. Had he been too paranoid? Had he let suspicion poison his mind? His jaw loosened slightly, and he found himself nodding. Maybe she was right. Maybe Robert really was just a businessman trying to secure a deal.

Alice stepped closer to him, and when she spoke again, her voice had changed. It was softer, more intimate, filled with suggestion and promise.

"You were really passionate yesterday," she whispered, her fingers trailing up his arm. Her eyes were heavy-lidded, and a small smile played at the corners of her mouth. "When we were in that hotel. I haven't seen that side of you in so long."

Her hand moved up to his chest, and she could feel his heart racing beneath her palm. Her other hand came up to touch his jaw, tilting his face down toward hers.

"My mother has the child tonight. She's staying over. It's just us," Alice continued, her voice dropping to barely a whisper. Her body pressed against his, and Gregory could feel the heat radiating from her. "Don't you want to feel that passion again? Don't you want us to feel like we did when we were just starting out?"

The question hung in the air between them, loaded with promise and desire. Gregory found himself drowning in her proximity, in the scent of her perfume, in the way her body fit against his like a key in a lock.

His hands came up to grip her waist, and he pulled her closer. When his lips met hers, it was desperate and hungry, fueled by confusion and need and the desperate hope that maybe everything could be salvaged.

Their clothes fell away in pieces. Her dress slipped down her shoulders. His shirt was unbuttoned and discarded. By the time they reached the bed, they were tangled together, limbs intertwined, breath mingling. He took her with renewed intensity, and she met him with equal fervor, her nails digging into his shoulders, her gasps of pleasure filling the room.

They moved together like they had when they were younger, when love hadn't yet become complicated by betrayal and doubt. For a few hours, the world outside their bedroom ceased to exist.

On the other side of the city, Robert sat in his penthouse apartment with a woman whose face was heavy with makeup and whose body was pressed against his side. She gently massaged the bruise forming on his ribs where Gregory's boot had connected, her touch light and teasing.

"How is it that someone like you, the heir to the Carnegie Syndicate, can be so kind and gentle?" she purred, her red-painted nails trailing across his chest. She smiled at him with calculated seduction, clearly enjoying her position beside power.

Robert's hand came up and stroked her chin dismissively, his eyes cold and empty. His smile was cruel, filled with contempt. He leaned back against the sofa, completely relaxed and utterly unmoved by her presence.

"Kind? Gentle?" He let out a short, harsh laugh that sounded like breaking glass. His voice was laced with venom. "That stupid woman actually thought I was some kind of gentleman. Some noble businessman wooing her away from her pathetic husband. I lost my patience with her long ago. I've simply been playing with her like a cat plays with a mouse."

The woman's smile faltered slightly, but she said nothing. Robert reached for his phone with one hand while keeping the other on her chin, and he dialed a number with practiced efficiency. The phone rang twice before someone answered on the other end.

"It's me," Robert's voice was cold and businesslike now, all pretense of charm stripped away. "I want you to teach someone a lesson. Someone they will never forget for the rest of their life. His name is Gregory Watson. I want him destroyed."

He paused, listening to the person on the other end, his expression unchanging, his eyes dead and calculating.

"I don't care how you do it. Make it hurt. Make it permanent. And make sure he understands that he did this to himself when he laid his hands on me," Robert continued, his voice dropping to something dangerous and final. "By tomorrow morning, I want him to regret ever being born."

He hung up the phone and tossed it aside, then pulled the woman closer to him, his attention already moving on. Behind his charming facade was nothing but ice and malice, and the game was far from over.

  • CHAPTER 6: THE TRUTH UNRAVELS

Always three vehicles behind him, matching his speed exactly.Gregory's stomach tightened. He accelerated slightly, testing. The black sedan accelerated with him. He slowed down. It slowed down too.His hands gripped the steering wheel tighter, and his eyes flicked to the rearview mirror repeatedly. The windows of the sedan were tinted dark, impossible to see inside. • CHAPTER 3: THE BREAKING POINT

The front door slammed shut behind them, and the sound echoed through the empty house like a gunshot. Alice spun around to face Gregory, her face flushed with anger, her hands clenched into fists at her sides."What the hell were you trying to do back there?" Her voice was sharp, cutting through the silence like glass. She took a step toward him, her eyes blazing. "Following me to a restaurant? Making a scene? Hitting Robert in front of all those people?"Gregory stood motionless in the entryway, his coat still on, his shoulders rigid. He stared at her with eyes so cold they looked like they belonged to a stranger. When he finally spoke, his voice was measured, controlled, which somehow made it more terrifying than if he'd yelled."You betrayed me, Alice."His words fell like stones into still water. Alice's expression faltered for just a moment before anger crashed back over her features. She crossed her arms over her chest, defensive."I did no such thing," she snapped back, her ch
