The morning sun filtered through the windshield as Gregory drove toward his office, his mind still clouded from the night before. Alice had left early for work, kissing him on the forehead and whispering promises that everything would be fine. He'd nodded, accepting her words like a man accepting a lifeline, hoping that maybe they were true.

His phone was connected to the car's Bluetooth system, and soft music played as he navigated through the city traffic. He didn't notice the black sedan at first. It was only when he merged onto the highway that something registered in his peripheral vision. The same car. Always three vehicles behind him, matching his speed exactly.

Gregory's stomach tightened. He accelerated slightly, testing. The black sedan accelerated with him. He slowed down. It slowed down too.

His hands gripped the steering wheel tighter, and his eyes flicked to the rearview mirror repeatedly. The windows of the sedan were tinted dark, impossible to see inside. He tried to convince himself it was a coincidence. Maybe someone was just going in the same direction. Maybe he was being paranoid again.

But his instincts screamed that he wasn't.

He took a sharp turn off the main highway, navigating through smaller streets toward his office building. The black sedan followed without hesitation, staying just far enough back to maintain the illusion of distance while never losing him. Gregory's heart was pounding now, his mouth dry.

He pressed down on the accelerator, and the car lurched forward. The sedan matched his speed instantly, and suddenly the chase was no longer subtle. The distance between them closed rapidly, and Gregory's hands were shaking as he reached for his phone to call the police.

His fingers had just touched the screen when it happened.

The black sedan suddenly surged forward with brutal acceleration. The front bumper connected with his rear bumper with a sound like thunder. The impact was violent and unexpected, throwing Gregory forward against his seatbelt. His scream tore from his throat involuntarily, a sound of pure terror and pain.

The car spun. The world became a blur of asphalt and sky and metal. He caught a glimpse of the sedan, saw the doors opening, and saw figures emerging from inside. Through the chaos and the overwhelming pain, he heard voices.

"Get the photos. Mission accomplished."

The words were the last thing he heard before darkness swallowed everything whole.

When consciousness returned, it came slowly, dragging him up through layers of fog and numbness. Gregory's eyes opened to the sterile white ceiling of a hospital room. The fluorescent lights hummed above him, and the smell of antiseptic filled his nostrils.

He tried to move his legs. Nothing happened.

Panic surged through him like ice water. He tried again, concentrating hard, willing his muscles to respond. His toes refused to move. His calves refused to twitch. From his waist down, his body felt like it belonged to someone else entirely.

The door to his room opened, and Alice rushed in. Her face was streaked with tears, her eyes red and swollen from crying. She grabbed his hand immediately, her fingers squeezing so hard it almost hurt.

"Oh my God, Gregory. Thank God you're awake. I was so scared," she sobbed, leaning down to press her forehead against his. Her whole body was trembling. "When I got the call from the hospital, I thought I was going to lose you. I was so scared."

Gregory stared at her, taking in her distress. Part of him wanted to believe it was genuine. Part of him wanted to let himself be comforted by her tears and her touch. But there was another part of him, a part that had learned to question everything.

"Alice," he said quietly, his voice hoarse from disuse. "What happened to me? The doctors haven't told me anything yet. I need to know."

Alice pulled back slightly, her eyes avoiding his. She nibbled on her lower lip, a nervous habit that screamed guilt. She looked away toward the window, then back at him, clearly wrestling with what to say.

"Tell me the truth," Gregory insisted, his voice gaining strength despite the weakness in his body. His eyes bore into hers, and she finally crumbled.

"You were in a serious car accident. The doctors have done tests, and they're concerned that you might have spinal damage," Alice whispered, her voice breaking. Tears streamed down her face as she gripped his hand tighter. "The probability of paralysis is very high. They want to do more tests and possibly surgery, but they're not certain about the outcome."

The words fell like bombs, each one detonating slowly in Gregory's mind. Paralyzed. The word echoed endlessly through his consciousness, a death sentence wrapped in medical terminology.

Alice squeezed his hand desperately and leaned close to him, her voice fierce despite the tears flowing down her cheeks.

"I swear to you, Gregory, I will find whoever did this to you. I don't know who they are or why they did this, but I will make them pay. I promise you that. I will make them pay," she vowed, her voice shaking with emotion. Her nails dug into his palm, and her entire body was rigid with determination.

Gregory watched her turn and leave the room, her figure disappearing through the doorway. He stared at the space where she'd been standing, and then a bitter laugh escaped his lips. It was a hollow sound, filled with despair and doubt.

Could she really keep that promise? Could she actually find the person responsible? Or was she just saying what he needed to hear?

He knew. Deep down in the core of his being, he knew exactly who was responsible. Robert . Robert Carnegie with his charming smile and his venomous words. Robert , who had been playing with Alice like a toy. Robert , who had decided that Gregory needed to be taught a lesson.

Gregory lay back against the pillows, staring at the ceiling. The doctor would be in soon. They would tell him the grim statistics about paralysis and spinal damage. They would talk about surgeries and therapies and the slim chances of recovery.

But there was nothing they could do about the true damage. The damage that had been done to his spirit, to his hope, to his future.

The door opened again, and a doctor entered with a clipboard and a sympathetic expression. He explained the severity of Gregory's condition in clinical terms, discussing nerve damage and vertebral fractures. He talked about the high probability of permanent paralysis. He talked about rehabilitation and adaptive therapies.

Gregory listened to it all with a strange calm that felt like the eye of a hurricane. When the doctor finished, Gregory simply looked at him and spoke quietly.

"Leave, please."

The doctor hesitated, but something in Gregory's voice made him comply without argument. He left the room quietly, closing the door behind him.

Gregory lay alone in the silence, and his mind worked through the implications of his situation. His body was broken, but his mind was still sharp. His body was trapped, but his will was still alive.

He reached for his phone on the bedside table with trembling fingers and scrolled through his contacts. There was one person he needed to call. One person who might be able to help him in ways that Alice never could.

He found the number and dialed. The phone rang twice before someone answered. The voice that came through the speaker was cold and precise, belonging to a woman with no warmth in her tone.

"Hello?"

Gregory took a deep breath, and when he spoke, his voice was soft but steady.

"I need your help. I've gotten myself into a situation that I can't get out of alone. I'm in the hospital. I can't move my legs. Someone did this to me on purpose, and I know who it was. But I can't do anything about it in my current state," he explained quietly, each word measured and carefully chosen. His voice cracked slightly as he continued. "I need someone who can help me get revenge. I need someone who understands how to handle people like Robert Carnegie."

Silence stretched across the line. Seconds ticked past like hours. Then the woman's voice came back, still cold but with something else underneath it now. Something sharp and dangerous.

"I'll be right there."

Gregory hung up the phone and let his hand fall back to the bed. He closed his eyes, and exhaustion finally overwhelmed him. Within moments, he drifted into a groggy sleep, his dreams filled with images of revenge and redemption.

Her voice was sharp, cutting through the silence like glass. She took a step toward him, her eyes blazing. "Following me to a restaurant? Making a scene? Hitting Robert in front of all those people?"Gregory stood motionless in the entryway, his coat still on, his shoulders rigid. He stared at her with eyes so cold they looked like they belonged to a stranger. When he finally spoke, his voice was measured, controlled, which somehow made it more terrifying than if he'd yelled."You betrayed me, Alice."His words fell like stones into still water.
