EDGAR'S FATAL MISTAKE
Edgar hurried forward with the proud expression of a man expecting praise. “This man entered the Finance Department under a false identity,” he explained. “He attempted to spy on confidential operations and attacked four security officers when we confronted him.”The second board member studied Simon. “Did Human Resources confirm that his identity was false?” she asked. “Have you reviewed his temporary employment documents?”Warren stepped beside Edgar. “There was no time to complete those checks,” he replied. “He became violent when my officers attempted to detain him.”Simon remained silent. Every false statement was being recorded, and neither man understood how deeply they were burying themselves. The younger officer studied Simon’s face and glanced at the injured guards. “Sir, this arrest feels rushed. We have witnesses, cameras and employment records available. Ignoring all of them could destroy the entire case before it begins.” Rusk ignored him.The first board member frowned.
A CRIMINAL BEHIND THE BADGE
Inspector Dale Rusk slipped his phone into his pocket after sending the message and walked towards Simon with confidence restored to his face. He believed the warning he had sent to the Marwick network had placed the situation back under control. All he needed to do now was remove Simon from Arranguare before anyone discovered why the supposed cleaner had entered the Finance Department.“You are under arrest for assaulting company security officers and attempting to steal confidential financial information,” Rusk announced. His hand moved towards the handcuffs hanging from his belt. “Turn around and place your hands behind your back.”Simon looked at the four officers still recovering on the floor. “What evidence do you have that I attempted to steal anything?” he asked. “You arrived minutes ago and have not questioned a single witness.”Rusk stopped in front of him. “Mr. Sloan has accused you of entering a restricted area and interfering with financial operations,” he replied. “Your
THE TARGET IS INSIDE ARRANGUARE
Simon picked up the mop and held it across his body. “Walk away,” he warned. “None of you needs to be injured for Edgar Sloan.”The officer on Simon’s left pulled out his baton. “We answer to the head of Security, not a cleaner,” he said. “Drop the mop and surrender.”Simon watched the baton rise. “Then you should ask whether your head is leading you towards duty or a prison cell,” he replied. “This is your final warning.”The baton swung towards Simon’s ribs. He blocked the officer’s wrist with the mop handle, turned it sharply and forced the weapon from his hand. The baton slid beneath a desk before Simon pushed the man backwards into an empty chair. The other two officers recovered and attacked again. Simon swept one man’s leg aside, caught his uniform and lowered him onto the floor. He then struck the final officer once in the stomach, leaving him bent over and struggling for breath. The fight ended almost as quickly as it had begun. Simon stood among the four officers without a w
FOUR OFFICERS ONE CLEANER
Simon remained still. “Mr. Sloan tried to strike me,” he replied. “I caught his wrist to protect myself. You may ask the employees who witnessed it.”Warren did not look at the gathered workers. “Mr. Sloan has already told me what happened,” he said. “His statement is enough for me.”Simon glanced at the four officers spreading around him. “You have not asked for my identification card, employment record or maintenance assignment,” he said. “Do you normally detain workers without confirming their names?”Warren’s expression hardened. “Your record will not matter when I am finished with you,” he replied. “Place your hands behind your back while I am still asking politely.”Simon touched the earpiece hidden beneath his hair. “Marcus, did you hear that?” he asked softly. “Warren refused to check my record before ordering my detention.”Marcus answered immediately. “Give me permission, sir. My team can reach you in less than thirty seconds,” he said. “There is no reason to allow this perf
SECURITY ANSWERED THE WRONG MAN
Edgar’s order left the Finance Department colder than before. The employees stared at him, but nobody reached for the internal phone. Ordering Security to remove a worker was understandable, but demanding that they break his arm was something else entirely.Edgar noticed their hesitation and struck the nearest desk with his palm. “Did everyone suddenly become deaf?” he demanded. “Call Warren Cole and tell him to bring his strongest officers. I want this cleaner taught a lesson he will remember whenever he tries to touch an important man again.”A nervous accountant picked up the desk phone. Her fingers shook as she entered the Security Department’s extension. “Mr. Cole, the chief financial officer needs you inside the Finance department immediately,” she said. “He said you should bring four officers with you.”Simon released the mop handle and looked towards the elevators. Edgar believed the arrival of Security would restore the authority he had lost, but his violent command had prese
BREAK THE CLEANERS ARM
Simon remained standing. “There are cloths inside the cart. I can give you one.”Simon then looked at the offered foot without moving. “I clean floors because labour carries no shame. But no salary gives a man the right to treat a worker like an animal. If shoes matter more than dignity, clean them yourself.”Edgar stepped closer until their faces were only a short distance apart. “I did not ask you to give me a cloth,” he said. “Get on your knees and clean my shoes with your own hands.”One employee stopped laughing and lowered his phone. Simon’s voice did not belong to a frightened temporary worker. Edgar noticed the change, and the attention he had enjoyed began to feel like judgment.Julian shook his head slightly from across the room. His expression begged Simon to obey. If Simon resisted, Edgar might search him, discover the photograph and realise that Julian had betrayed him.Edgar pressed his shoe closer. “You are confusing patience with equality. Everyone here answers to me.
