The servant behind the table lowered his eyes. A few nearby guests began listening. Nathan noticed the attention and raised his voice slightly, enjoying the small audience.

“You people always arrive early for refreshments,” he continued. “You pretend to care about charity, then fill your plates before the real donors decide what they want.”

Several guests smiled awkwardly, unsure whether Nathan was joking or deliberately humiliating a stranger.
