Chapter 33 — Would You Do It Again
Veylan stood up when he saw them coming. Not quickly. The slow rise of someone for whom standing had become a calculation rather than a reflex. He stayed where he was, didn't move toward the gate, didn't approach the ward-stone's edge. He waited, the way he'd waited for three centuries, with the patience that had stopped being a virtue a long time ago and had become simply the shape of him.Mira stopped ten feet from the boundary. Close enough to be heard without raising her voice. Far enough that the ward-stone's range still mattered, though it was weaker out here at the gate than inside.Kaelen stood half a step behind her. Not protecting — present. She hadn't asked him to stay back and he hadn't offered to step forward. They'd found the right distance without discussing it, the way they found most things now."I have a question," Mira said.Veylan looked at her. "Ask it." "If you could go back," she said. "To before the hollowing started. Before the fifteen people you sent south to
Chapter 32 — Callow Again
Essie was waiting at the gate when they came through. Not because she'd known they were coming — or if she had, she didn't say so. She was doing something to the east ward-stone with her brush, which was what she was always doing when things arrived at her junction that required her hands to be occupied. She looked at the three of them. Then past them at the road, at the shape following a hundred yards behind."That's Veylan," she said. Not a question. Kaelen looked at her. "You know what he looks like." "I've been watching this road for thirty years," she said. "White hair. Grey robes. Walks like someone who stopped being in a hurry a very long time ago." She set the brush down. "He's not coming in." Again, not a question. "No," Kaelen said. "He said he'd wait outside." She looked at the ward-stone. "Stone's not strong enough to suppress her signal for long. An hour. Maybe less." She said it to Kaelen but she was looking at Mira when she said it, at the left hand, at whatever she saw
Chapter 31 — Reach
Nothing visible happened for the first minute.Kaelen watched Mira stand in the road with her eyes closed and her hands at her sides and saw nothing he could report in a field document. No light. No sound beyond the subsonic frequency from below. No transformation markers accelerating visibly. Just a twelve-year-old standing still on an ash-pale road while something two thousand years old reached for her from underneath the world. Then the ash around her feet stopped moving. Not dramatically. Just — stopped. The small currents that ash made in any environment, the micro-disturbances of breath and footfall and ambient air, all of it ceased in a three-foot radius around where she stood. The ash sat completely still while the rest of the road surface continued its normal drift. Like she had become the eye of something.Veylan was watching her with an expression Kaelen didn't have a name for. Not satisfaction. Not relief. The expression of someone watching an experiment they designed and
Chapter 30 — The Sound from Below
Kaelen had his sword out before he'd consciously decided to draw it.The sound wasn't above ground. It came from below — from the deep-ground Elegy, from somewhere in the bedrock, the specific frequency of something that had been still for a very long time beginning to move. He felt it in his fractures before he heard it with his ears. Stage 4, and even Stage 4 was enough to register a shift this large.Mira had her hand flat on her sternum. Not a gesture of pain — the gesture she used when the ambient pressure changed suddenly and she was adjusting. She was looking north with an expression he hadn't seen before. Not the working look. Not the fear-look. Something that was both at once.Veylan had gone very still on the far side of the road."That's not me," he said. Kaelen looked at him. "I know." "That's not my doing. I told you — months, perhaps less." He paused. "That was not months." The Witness had her cane planted firmly on the road, both hands on it, and she was looking north w
Chapter 29 — Three Hundred Years of Not Knowing
The admission sat in the air between them.I don't know. Three hundred years of building toward something and the center of it, the part that mattered most, was a blank. Kaelen watched Veylan's face while he said it and watched what it cost him — not the saying but the having carried it unsaid for so long that saying it had the quality of setting down something very heavy in front of people who hadn't known he was carrying it.Mira was quiet for a moment. Then she said: "The hollowed villages. My mother. Drav. All of that, and you don't know what happens to me if I do what you're asking." "No," he said. "I know what I'm hoping for. I know what the hypothesis suggests. I don't know what actually happens." He paused. "The hypothesis has never been tested. There has never been a Resonance Point at the right stage when the timing was this close." He looked at his hands. "You are the first. There is no second data point."The Witness made a sound. Not quite a word. The sound of someone hea
Chapter 28 — Elena
Nobody moved for a moment. The road held the three of them on one side and Veylan on the other, and the word he'd used sat in the ash-pale air between them like something that had been waiting a long time to be said out loud. Elena. The Witness's hand on the cane was white at the knuckles. She hadn't looked away from him.Veylan didn't push it. He looked at Kaelen, then at Mira, then back to the Witness with the expression he'd had in the orchard — the controlled calm with the exhaustion underneath it. But there was something else now. Something that hadn't been there in the orchard. Something that looked almost like relief, which was the wrong thing to see on the face of a three-hundred-year-old man who had spent decades hollowing villages."You came yourself," he said to the Witness. "I didn't expect that." "I know," she said. "That was the point." He looked at her for a moment. "You haven't left the Spire in eleven years." "I'm aware." "I would have known. If you'd left before now.
