THE SLUM SOVEREIGN

Eighty-five million credits feels a lot different when it's just a single sliver of premium plastic resting in your palm. Back in the Obsidian Vault’s shadowy VIP tunnel, Grand Master Vance handed me the encrypted Platinum Black Card himself. His fingers shook, age crumpling him nearly in half, nose almost brushing his shoes.

“The funds have cleared, my lord,” he whispered, oozing the kind of reverence only money buys. “Standard five percent f*e, of course. The rest eighty point seven five million anonymous, untraceable, ready for you. Is there anything else we can do to keep your… continued favor?”

“Settle a private invoice,” I answered, my voice heavy and distorted behind the matte-black iron mask.

I tapped the Abyss Ring, bending space right at my side. A flicker of digitized parchment slipped into my hand: my shopping list of rare magical ingredients raw materials regular shops would never carry, the kind you need to brew a Sovereign Dragon Elixir. I needed those special catalysts; you don’t unlock a 20% stat multiplier buying off-the-shelf.

“I want three Stardust Lotus roots, five ounces of Tier-5 Salamander blood, and a flawless Thunder Eagle Core,” I said, all business. “Pull them from your vault. Charge my card. Have it ready at Sector 7’s public drop-box within an hour.”

Vance’s eyes went wide at that he knew exactly how rare and dangerous those ingredients were. But he nodded, voice almost tripping over itself. “Absolutely, my lord. You have my word absolute discretion.”

Ten minutes later, I slipped out a hidden door into the cold midnight of the Mid-District. Pulled my hood low over the iron mask. Shadows and neon, I blended right in.

I didn’t bother with a hover-taxi back to the slums. I just activated Shadow Step.

My body unraveled into local mist. I streaked from rooftop to rooftop, barely a blur in the city’s peripheral vision. With 315 agility, I moved like a bullet; the wind screamed past, but my endurance made it feel like nothing. No one could keep up. I tore right across the line between luxury and rot Upper District to Sector 7 faster than anyone would believe.

I reappeared in a pitch-black alley, right behind the rickety thrift store where I’d bought my mask in the first place. The public drop-box a fat slab of armored steel jammed into the brick hummed quietly. I swiped the new Platinum Black. Click. The door swung open with a hiss, and inside suspended and glowing sat a sleek temperature-controlled case. Those were the rare alchemical prizes I’d ordered.

I reached for the case. One touch, and it vanished inside the Abyss Ring.

Now for the fun part.

Instead of some overpriced lab, I headed deep into Sector 7’s underbelly down into the sewers, through pitch dark and toxic filth, until I found an ancient bunker: pre-cataclysm bomb shelter, forgotten and buried in a foundation of concrete and steel. Nobody comes down here. That’s the point.

I swept a heavy slab aside didn’t even strain, not with 395 strength and pulled out the flask I’d taken from the Iron-Hide Broodmother. Time for some real alchemy. The ancient flask responded instantly, glowing as it sensed the high-grade loot.

I uncorked the flask, poured in the shimmering Stardust Lotus, the burning blood, the crackling Core. As soon as the last drop went in, energy flared violent, blinding, wild. Swirling violet and gold, sparks flying everywhere.

Both hands pressed to glass, I funneled my mana straight in, holding the brew stable.

$$BEEP! MANA FOCUS STABLE. EXTRACTION SYSTEM OVERSEEING INDUCTION COMPILING...$$

Three hours of silence, sitting cross-legged on freezing concrete. I tried to rest, but my mind kept jumping back to Oliver’s broken face and the horror in Chloe’s eyes when I’d dropped eighty-five million credits just to tear through their world. For them, the nightmare started there. They didn’t realize that was only my opening move.

Finally, three hours gone. A sharp, clean chime jolted me out of quiet.

$$BEEP! CONGRATULATIONS! SOVEREIGN DRAGON ELIXIR SUCCESSFULLY REFINED!$$

$$QUALITY RANK: FLAWLESS (EPIC GRADE).$$

I popped my eyes open. The flask hummed, no more violent sparks just a single teardrop of golden liquid, brighter and denser than anything alive. Power compressed the air around me until my ears rang.

I poured the drop straight onto my tongue.

White. Nothing but white.

ROAR!

A spectral dragon roared right through my skull. Heat blasted through my chest, every cell cracking, melting, reforging. My skin glowed gold. My veins lit up. I didn’t scream it locked in my throatwhile my whole body was rewritten from the inside out.

$$BEEP! WARNING: HIGH-DENSITY CELLULAR RECONSTRUCTION IN PROGRESS.$$

$$UPGRADING TOTAL ATTRIBUTE POOL BY 20\%... BEYOND BASIC EXTRACTION BOUNDARIES...$$

The agony stretched out forever, but eventually the heat faded. I slumped forward, hands pressing into concrete so hard the floor cracked. Didn’t even mean to just resting my weight bent the earth.

I stood, something dark and dead sloughing off my skin. Gravity didn’t grip me anymore. My vision cut through the dark; I saw every floating particle in the air.

“Status,” I said my voice alone made the stones tremble.

$$BEEP! ATTRIBUTES COMPUTING... STATS UPDATED.$$

Name: Ethan Vance (Identity Hidden: Ghost)

Level: 7

Strength: 474 (+79)

Agility: 378 (+63)

Endurance: 336 (+56)

Mana: 324 (+54)

Bloodline: Sovereign Shadow Core Bloodline (Epic Grade - Evolved)

New Bloodline Passive: Sovereign Pressure (Suppresses opponents with much lower stats, halves their power in combat).

I stared at the stat screen, grinning behind my mask. Nearly 500 strength. The captain of a corporate raid team usually hit 300 and they were top-tier. I was still just level 7. I’d become a walking disaster.

A new alert popped up, slicing into my focus a stream from the city’s hunter network.

VANCE CORPORATION DECLARES CHAPTER 11 BANKRUPTCY! STOCK CRASHES 98% OVERNIGHT!

Silver Wing Guild Vice-Captain selection postponed due to contract default! Oliver Vance and Chloe Mercer stripped of commanding rights!

I skimmed comment after comment. The auction had blown up their entire world. Oliver’s father—stroke, ambulance, gone. The company got forced to sell everything just to keep the doors open. Mercs bailed nobody fights for free.

The guild? They crushed Oliver and Chloe. No special status, no privileges, only debt. Desperate, they’d joined a freelance raid team hoping a dungeon run might save them, maybe sell a rare boss core to stay afloat.

The dungeon’s name burned bright on the alert: The Sunken Crypts Sector 7, tomorrow.

I clenched my fist so hard my bones popped.

“Perfect,” I whispered. “You left me for dead to protect yourselves. Now it’s your turn to fight to survive.”

They thought the auction was rock bottom. They didn’t realize I was just taking pieces off their chessboard. The Sunken Crypts? That’s where they’d pay in flesh and blood.

Mask on. Ring checked. I faded back into darkness, moving through the hell under Sector 7. This time, the Ghost Hunter was going to the raid and there were no safety nets left for them.

  • FACE SLAPPING AT THE VIP AUCTION

The Diamond VIP Suite was as over-the-top as it got. Floating above the vast, circular floor of The Obsidian Vault, it sat sealed behind a wall of polarized, soundproof smart glass utter privacy. • SOURCING THE FORBIDDEN LOOT

Leaving the trash-lined chaos of Sector 7 for the neon-soaked luxury of the Mid-District felt like changing worlds in the blink of an eye. Down below, freelancers scraped and clawed for pocket change; up here, people wore silk robes over enchanted armor and dropped a scavenger’s annual haul on a single bottle of mana wine. I kept my hood up and my iron mask tight over my face, slipping through crowds as just another merc or if anyone got nervous maybe an assassin out for a snack. Nobody met my eyes. It helped that my stats these days, especially my nearly maxed-out strength and the upgraded shadow bloodline, gave off a deadly kind of vibe that kept the riff-raff at bay.Instead of marching through the main, muggy corporate streets, I zigzagged through back alleys, all clean stone and soft light, until I got to The Obsidian Vault a place that pretended to be a fancy antique store but actually held the city’s biggest, nastiest Black Market Auction. In this place, you could buy almost an

But now, with my endurance jacked up by a 210 strength stat, those hits were just heavy nudges.I don’t know how long I spent fighting the current in total darkness. Rot, rust, old chemicals every possible stench slammed into me at once. I wiped the grime from my face and activated Abyss Eyes.Everything shifted turned cold and sharp in blue and silver. Huge arches of pitted concrete rose overhead, smothered in patches of radioactive moss that glowed faintly. Yep. I’d landed in the Under-Sewers, the endless maze winding under the wealthy neighborhoods above. No one decent came down here. Beasts thrived, outcasts died.I slogged my way through the sludge
