Chapter 1
The Awakening
# Chapter 1: The Awakening
The crystal pulsed on its pedestal, humming with a low frequency that Ethan felt in his teeth.
"Vale, Ethan." The proctor's voice cracked through the hall like a whip.
Three hundred kids turned to look. Ethan swallowed and walked forward, his shoes squeaking against polished stone. Everyone else had walked up with parents cheering, siblings recording on crystal-lenses, girls giggling behind their hands. He walked alone. His mother was working a double shift at the mill. His father had been dead for six years.
The Awakening Hall smelled like ozone and nervous sweat. Ethan pressed his palm flat against the crystal's cold surface.
Nothing happened for a second. Then two. Long enough that a kid near the front—Marcus Thorne, gold-threaded uniform, smug as a cat in cream—snorted.
"Guess even the crystal doesn't want to bother," Marcus said.
A few laughs. Ethan's jaw tightened but he didn't look back.
Then the crystal lit.
Golden light spiraled up through its facets, casting warped shadows across the vaulted ceiling. The proctor's clipboard hovered forgotten in his hand as text scrolled across the crystal's surface in shimmering script:
**TALENT: BEAST TAMER**
**RANK: F**
Silence first. Then the laughter started—real laughter this time, sharp and cruel, rippling backward through the crowd like a wave. Marcus doubled over.
"F-rank," he wheezed. "F-rank *Beast Tamer*. That's not even a talent, that's a pet-shop job."
Ethan's ears burned. He kept his spine straight, kept his face flat, because if he let one crack show they'd never stop. He'd seen it happen to other kids. Once they smelled blood they didn't quit.
"My cousin's F-rank Alchemist," someone muttered. "At least that's useful for something."
"Beast Tamers can't even summon anything worth looking at below C-rank," another voice said. "F-rank means his beast'll probably be a rock."
Ethan stared at the crystal. Stared at the two letters glowing there like a brand. *F.* The bottom rung. The rank they gave you when the system had scraped the barrel and found nothing left.
He thought about his mother's hands, cracked and swollen from mill work, and how she'd told him last night, *Whatever you get, we'll figure it out. Together.* He thought about how she'd smiled when she said it, and how the smile hadn't reached her eyes because she was already afraid.
He hated that fear. Hated that he'd probably just confirmed it.
"Ethan Vale," the proctor said again, softer now, the kind of soft that was almost worse than the laughing. "Step aside, please. Next."
Ethan didn't move yet. He was still looking at the crystal, at the fading gold light, and that's when he saw it.
A flicker.
Not the golden script. Something else—something *underneath* it, black lines crawling like veins beneath skin, forming a symbol he'd never seen in any Awakening record, any textbook, any story his father used to tell him before bed. It looked less like a rank and more like a wound. Sharp angles, a shape that seemed to bend wrong even looking at it straight on, like his eyes wanted to slide off it.
It lasted less than a second.
Then it was gone, and the crystal was dark, and the golden **F** sat there alone like nothing had happened at all.
"Ethan Vale," the proctor repeated, louder, irritated now. "You're holding up the line."
"Right," Ethan said. His voice came out steadier than he expected. "Sorry."
He stepped aside. Marcus was still smirking at him from the crowd, arms crossed, clearly already composing the story he'd tell at dinner tonight—*you should've seen the tamer kid's face*—but Ethan barely registered it.
He kept replaying the black symbol behind his eyes. The way it had pulsed, once, like something breathing. Like something *waking up* and immediately deciding to go back to sleep because it wasn't ready yet.
Or because he wasn't.
*What was that,* he thought, weaving through the crowd toward the exit doors, ignoring the whispers that trailed him like flies. *That wasn't a rank. That wasn't anything I've ever seen in an Awakening.*
He didn't know if it mattered. He didn't know if it was a glitch, a malfunction, some proctor's idea of a prank on the kid who got the worst talent in the room.
But some small, stubborn part of him—the same part that refused to let his face crack in front of Marcus Thorne—filed the image away and didn't let it go.
F-rank Beast Tamer.
That was what the world would see stamped on his record for the rest of hislife.
He didn't know yet that the world was wrong.

UNBOUND: THE DEVOURING TAMER The Unexpected Victory
# Chapter 20: Ash came out of the shadow low and fast, not at the Alpha's flank this time—behind it, in the one stretch of near-total dark the broken pillar carved into the cavern floor, exactly where Ethan had sent it three seconds earlier with a plan he was building in real time, out of every hard lesson the last five weeks had beaten into him.The Alpha spun to meet the strike anyway. Too fast, too experienced, decades of survival compressed into reflexes that didn't need eyes to sense a threat, only instinct. Ash's jaws closed on nothing but the edge of a rust-colored flank, drawing a shallow line of blood before the bigger wolf's counter-swipe sent it tumbling across broken stone.**[ASH — HEALTH: 58%]**Ethan pressed his back against the pillar, chest heaving, watching his plan fail in real time and refusing to let the fear win the argument happening in his head. Darkness alone wasn't enough. He'd known that the moment Ash's first strike missed—the Alpha didn't need to see a th

UNBOUND: THE DEVOURING TAMER The Alpha
Chapter 19The chamber beyond the doors was bigger than anything the first two floors had prepared him for—a cavern easily the size of a gymnasium, ceiling lost somewhere in darkness overhead, floor scattered with broken pillars that looked less like ruins and more like something had shattered them from the inside out.In the center of it stood the biggest wolf Ethan had ever seen. Not Ash-sized. Not close. This thing stood shoulder-high to *him*, easily, corded muscle rippling under a coat the color of old rust, jaws lined with teeth that caught the crystal light and threw it back sharp and wet. Scars crossed its muzzle in old, healed lines—the marks of something that had fought and won more times than Ethan wanted to think about. Its eyes, when they found him, burned a dull, furnace orange, and the growl that rolled out of its chest hit the chamber floor with a physical weight Ethan felt through the soles of his boots.**[BOSS ENCOUNTER: ALPHA FANGWOLF]****[RANK: E+ — EXCEEDS STAN

UNBOUND: THE DEVOURING TAMER Dungeon Test
Chapter 18The Beginner Dungeon sat at the district's civic center, unremarkable from the outside—a squat gray building that looked more like a records office than the entrance to something with monsters in it. Ethan had walked past it a hundred times without a second glance. Now he stood in the registration line with Ash pressed silent against one leg and Bramble bumping restlessly against the other, and the building didn't look unremarkable at all anymore. It looked like a door he'd been locked out of his whole life, finally cracked open. The line moved slow. Mostly D and E-rank kids his age, a few older, all of them chatting easy with each other in the way people did when they belonged somewhere, when nobody had ever handed them a gray pamphlet and told them the world had already decided what they were worth."Next," called the registration clerk, a bored-looking woman with a stack of forms and a stamp she wielded like she'd rather be anywhere else.Ethan stepped up. "Ethan Vale. B

UNBOUND: THE DEVOURING TAMER Two Beast
Chapter 17The headache started on the third day of hunting with both of them, and by the end of the first week Ethan had stopped calling it a headache and started calling it what it actually was: a soul stretched thinner than it liked.**[BOND CAPACITY: 2/2 ACTIVE]****[NOTE: SIMULTANEOUS BOND MANAGEMENT MAY CAUSE COGNITIVE STRAIN IN LOW-RANK TAMERS]**He'd skimmed past that warning too, same as all the others, right up until he understood exactly what it meant in practice.Managing Ash alone had been quiet work. A pinprick behind the eyes when the wolf's senses caught something. A pulse of cold calculation when it wanted to plan an ambush. Ash thought in silences and precision, and after a week and a half of bonding, Ethan had learned to read those silences the way he'd once read the tone in his mother's voice through a thin apartment wall.Bramble was not quiet. The boar's presence in the back of Ethan's skull came through like a radio stuck between stations—blunt, insistent, mostl
