Chapter 1
DISCARDED TRASH
“Sign the contract and get out, Ethan. We live in different worlds now.”
Chloe’s voice was as frosty as the magic swirling in her hands. She hurled a crumpled termination form onto the filthy, blood-stained dungeon floor. It landed with a wet slap, splashing black monster blood right by my boots. I stared down at it, my grip tightening around my battered scavenging hook. My knuckles turned white. For three years, I pulled eighteen-hour shifts in these poisonous, sulfur-reeking dungeons. I crawled through filth, skinned rotten monsters, and sold every core I could just to keep Chloe at that elite academy she dreamed of. Now she’d finally graduated. She was a bona fide Tier-2 Frost Mage. And this was my thanks. “Chloe, I skipped meals so you could get that staff,” I rasped. My throat burned from breathing in dungeon dust. “Worked double night shifts in the Abyss. All for you. And now you’re kicking me out of the guild?” “Be honest with yourself, Ethan,” came another voice from behind her, smug and just dripping with arrogance. Oliver Vance strolled forward, his obsidian armor flashing gold trims, cape swirling behind him. His hand snaked around Chloe’s waist without a second thought. Tier-5 Pyromancer, sole heir to the Vance Corporation he belonged to city royalty. Chloe leaned into him, looking up at him the way she hadn’t looked at me in years. “You’re an F-rank Scavenger, Ethan,” Oliver scoffed. His eyes flicked over my torn overalls and grime-caked gloves. “You’re basically the janitor. Chloe deserves someone from the clouds, not someone crawling in sewer water.” Behind them, the Silver Wing Guild mercs burst out laughing. Their voices echoed, bouncing painfully around the cave. “Don’t hate me for taking my shot,” Chloe said, finally meeting my eyes. Her gaze was hard, cold. “F-rank scavengers don’t change the world. I want a partner, Ethan, someone with real prospects. Oliver can give me everything I want. You can’t even get us out of the slums.” I could barely get the next words out. My voice trembled, raw and angry. “So that’s it? You’re just throwing everything away?” “There was nothing to throw away,” Oliver said, not missing a beat. His smile was almost cruel. “You were a stepping stone. Your job’s done.” Before I could come back with something—anything the entire cavern started to shake. The stone roof above us groaned, and brilliant red cracks tore through the stalactites overhead. The temperature dropped so fast it made my skin burn, then shot up again. “The boss is going berserk!” a scout bellowed, voice wild with panic. “The cave’s collapsing! The portal’s breaking Everyone out! Move!” Oliver barely even flinched. “Let’s go, babe.” He tugged Chloe toward the exit. As they moved, Oliver looked back, and I caught the glint in his eyes. He nodded toward the thick stone pillar above my head, raised his dragon-bone staff, and with a roar let fly a fireball the size of my fist. “Oliver! What are you doing?!” I screamed, but it was already too late. The fireball smashed straight into the pillar. It exploded in a hail of stone and dust. A wall of rock crashed down too fast to dodge. A massive boulder slammed into my legs, trapping me. I heard my bones snap. The pain flooded my brain until there was nothing else. “Oliver!” Chloe gasped, pulling away from him for just a second. “He’s just F-rank, Chloe. He’ll go down as an accidental casualty. Nobody’s going to ask about a scavenger,” Oliver snapped back, yanking her through the blue portal. She didn’t even spare a glance. Then the portal winked out, sealed behind a pile of rock. Pitch-black, smothering silence. I was pinned. Blood soaked into the dirt under me. Every breath burned my ribs felt like knives in my chest. Out of the gloom, two huge crimson eyes snapped open. The Shadow Demon had woken up. Twelve feet of pure muscle and shadow, claws glistening with acid, and that monstrosity was coming right for me. It had scented the blood. Is this really it? Betrayed, abandoned, and tossed aside like garbage? My hand fumbled blindly in the dust. I grabbed something cold and rough. It was the corpse of an Elite Shadow Hound the thing Oliver’s team had killed but left behind. My fingers closed around its hide. A jolt of electricity tore up my arm. BEEP! The pain in my chest vanished. I watched, stunned, as fractures in my arms mended right under my skin. My lungs filled with sweet, clean air. My crushed legs squelched uncomfortably but knit whole. The boulder pinning me down suddenly felt light. Ridiculously light. With a grunt, I shoved upwards. The two-ton chunk of stone sailed through the air and smashed against the far wall, turning to rubble. I staggered to my feet, flexing my hands. I felt stronger, lighter, faster. More powerful than I’d ever been. BEEP! STATS UPDATED. Name: Ethan Vance Class: God-Level Extractor (Unique) Level: 1 Strength: 60 (was 10) Agility: 62 (was 12) Mana: 55 (was 5) Skills: Shadow Step (Rank 1) Just by touching a dead monster, my stats had shot through the roof. I started to laugh—low and dangerous. If this was real, if I could steal the strength and powers from everything I killed, then the whole world just became my hunting ground. A thunderous, earsplitting shriek shook the cavern walls. The Level 50 Shadow Demon finally stalked out of the fog: twelve feet tall, all shifting darkness and teeth. It charged, fist raised to crush me flat. A couple minutes earlier, I would’ve died before I could even scream. But now? Everything slowed. I could see the path of its fist, every twitch of those acid-tipped claws. I thought of that new power burning in my veins Shadow Step. I let it carry me. I vanished in a swirl of black mist. The demon’s blow slammed into empty stone, leaving a crater where I’d just been. I reappeared behind the monster, scavenging hook gleaming in my fist, blue light from the system screen painting everything in an otherworldly glow. “Chloe, Oliver...” My voice echoed softly, cold and sure. “Just wait. I’m coming for you.”Expand

THE SOVEREIGN SCAVENGER: GOD-LEVEL EXTRACTION SYSTEM THE SLUM SOVEREIGN
Eighty-five million credits feels a lot different when it's just a single sliver of premium plastic resting in your palm. Back in the Obsidian Vault’s shadowy VIP tunnel, Grand Master Vance handed me the encrypted Platinum Black Card himself. His fingers shook, age crumpling him nearly in half, nose almost brushing his shoes.“The funds have cleared, my lord,” he whispered, oozing the kind of reverence only money buys. “Standard five percent fee, of course. The rest eighty point seven five million anonymous, untraceable, ready for you. Is there anything else we can do to keep your… continued favor?”“Settle a private invoice,” I answered, my voice heavy and distorted behind the matte-black iron mask.I tapped the Abyss Ring, bending space right at my side. A flicker of digitized parchment slipped into my hand: my shopping list of rare magical ingredients raw materials regular shops would never carry, the kind you need to brew a Sovereign Dragon Elixir. I needed those special catalysts
