“What did you just say?” he growled, but the other voice barely finished before Gregg’s eyes blazed in fury, his breathing harsh.

The line crackled, and for a moment, only the sound of his ragged breaths filled the room.

His face darkened even more. He looked ready to hurl the phone against the wall. His knuckles whitened as he gripped the edge of his mahogany desk, his voice slicing through the still air of his office like a blade.

“What are you saying, you fool?!” he barked.

Static crackled faintly from the phone pressed to his ear before a hesitant, gravelly voice responded on the other end. “Sir, I’m yet to… carry out the unlock.”

Gregg’s eyes darkened. His nostrils flared. “What nonsense!” he bellowed, stomping his foot on the floor. His voice echoed off the office walls, bouncing between the cold metal cabinets and the thick velvet curtains. He slammed a palm against the desk, sending a paperweight tumbling to the floor. “You stole the documents last night successfully, so deco

Heath looked at Braxton. His earlier amusement was gone, replaced by cold, focused intent. “Get the big cat here.”Braxton shifted uncomfortably. “But… I don’t have his number.”Heath shot him a look that could curdle milk. “What do you mean you don’t have it?”“I’m yet to get it!” Braxton insisted, throwing his hands up. “The man’s a ghost. Mysterious at times, and for what? He’s just a plain fool with a lucky streak. I haven’t needed to call him directly before and the person I asked to get his contact failed me.”Heath hissed in frustration, running a hand through his hair. “Fine. Then we have to wait for her to wake up again. She’ll have it.”Braxton nodded, looking relieved that the heat was off him.About twenty minutes later, Natalia’s eyes fluttered open. Consciousness returned in a dizzying rush, along with a deep, aching soreness in her shoulders. She tried to move her hands and found they were above her head. Her entire body was dangling, her toes barely brushing the ground

Heath looked at her, all pretense of amusement gone. “Nathan,” he said, the name a curse. “I want him gone. Erased. He’s a huge threat. An obstacle that needs to be removed.”Natalia’s eyes darted from Heath to Braxton, who stood smirking behind him, and back. The pieces slammed together. “So you’re both in this together,” she said, her voice flat with disgust. “A common agenda.”Braxton nodded, enjoying her realization. “Yes. That’s why I approached you the first time. But you didn’t give in to my very generous offer. Your loyalty was… misplaced.”“What did Nathan ever do to you chumps?” she demanded, her fury giving her voice strength. “What could he possibly have done to make you want to ruin him?!”Braxton laughed, a dry, humorless sound. “His existence is what’s wrong. That’s all you need to know.”She looked at both of them, bound and battered but unbowed. “So what’s the plan now? Use me as bait to get to Nathan? You’re both pathetic. Truly pathetic.”Heath nodded, a sarcastic,

Braxton had seen enough. He was fed up. His earlier shock at Heath’s performance had evaporated, replaced by a fresh, hot anger at Natalia’s continued defiance. “You crazy bitch!” he snarled, stepping toward her, his face contorted. “Do you have a death wish? Spitting on people like a rabid animal!” He took another step closer, raising his hand high. “Ah, you need to learn some respect!”He was going to slap her still good-looking face. The swing was already beginning its arc through the air.But Heath’s arm shot out, his hand closing like a vise around Braxton’s wrist, stopping the blow inches from Natalia’s face.Braxton stared at him, surprised. “What?”“No,” Heath said, his voice calm but firm. He pushed Braxton’s arm down. “Let her be, man.”Braxton stepped back, rubbing his wrist. He looked from Heath to Natalia and back, a sly, understanding smile touching his lips. “Okay. Right. I get it. You want to do the honors yourself. You should. You’ve earned the right to slap the tast

She felt his hands on the ropes at her wrists. But instead of fumbling to untie the complex knots, his hands paused. They rested there, on the ropes, not tugging, not loosening, just… holding. Then Heath stepped out from behind the pillar. He didn’t untie her. Instead, he burst into loud, unrestrained laughter, clapping his hands together as if he’d just heard the world’s best joke. The sound was so wrong, so out of place, that it froze the room. The three men looked confused. Braxton’s bewildered expression slowly melted into a grin of understanding. Natalia’s brows creased in dawning horror.“Heath,” she said, her voice thin and uncertain. “What are you doing…? Untie me.”He wiped a pretend tear from his eye, his laughter subsiding into chuckles. “Ah, oh me,” he sighed, shaking his head with theatrical flair. “I think I should seriously consider Hollywood, Natalia. What do you say? Was I convincing? The concerned savior?”“I… I don’t understand,” she stammered, her mind refusing to

Natalia shut her eyes tight, trying to push through the pounding, nauseating throb at the base of her skull. Every heartbeat sent a fresh wave of pain radiating through her head.Braxton watched her struggle, then took a leisurely step closer. “But, Natalia,” he said, his voice a mockery of reason. “Don’t you think you’re giving me a little too much credit here?”She forced her eyes open and lifted her gaze to his, her expression one of pure, weary contempt. He nodded, as if they were having a civilized debate. “If I wanted to get back at you myself for your… let’s call it ‘rude’ behavior that night, I would have done something much cheaper. You know?” His eyes traveled slowly, insolently, over her face, down the line of her throat to her collarbone, exposed by her damp, ruined blouse. A slow, predatory smirk spread across his lips. “You’re a beautiful woman, after all. There are more enjoyable ways to teach a lesson.”She understood the vile implication immediately. A fresh, hot fury

In a sparse, dimly lit room that smelled of damp concrete and stale air, Natalia was slumped against a thick, cold pillar. Heavy ropes bound her wrists behind her, pinning her in place. She was unconscious, her head lolling to one side, her dark hair falling across her face. A single bare bulb swung gently from a wire in the ceiling, casting shifting shadows over her still form. The door creaked open. Braxton walked in, his shoes making soft clicks on the concrete floor. He stopped in front of her, a curious, almost clinical look on his face. He reached out and gently pushed her hair aside, tucking it behind her ear. His fingers came away damp. In the poor light, he saw it—a dark, sticky trickle of blood that had run from the back of her head down the side of her neck, staining the collar of her blouse. His eyes darted angrily to the three men standing nervously by the door. “What happened to her?” he demanded, his voice tight. One of the men, pulling his black ski mask off completely
