The massive stone doors of the ancient vault had barely ground open, casting a narrow sliver of pale light into the dark, when the shadows behind them erupted.

The heavy, metallic clank of Raven’s boots suddenly stopped. For a fraction of a second, the only sound in the damp stone chamber was the rapid, shallow breathing of Nara as she lay shivering in Reza's arms, the red static of her debt-load crackling across her pale skin.

Then, the darkness split.

A blinding arc of cold, blue runic energy cleaved through the air. The physical pressure of the strike was immense, a localized shockwave that blew the dust off the stone floor in a violent, expanding ring.

"Get in!" Reza roared, throwing himself forward. He shoved Elara and Nara through the opening of the massive stone doors just as Raven’s greatsword slammed into the threshold.

Sparks exploded in a brilliant, chaotic shower of white and blue. The stone archway cracked, throwing jagged fragments of rock into the air. Reza scrambled back on his hands and knees, his heart hammering a frantic, erratic rhythm against his ribs.

Through the dust, Raven Daryn stepped into the vault. His eyes, cold and entirely devoid of mercy, locked onto Reza. He didn't look like a man who had just slipped on lavender soap a few minutes ago. He looked like an avatar of pure, relentless authority, his greatsword humming with a low, menacing frequency that made the fillings in Reza’s teeth ache.

"You’re fast for a scavenger," Raven said, his voice flat, his chest barely rising as he recovered his stance. He stepped through the threshold, his boots crunching on the stone debris. "But you’re running out of room."

They were in a long, narrow corridor lined with ancient, towering stone statues of long-forgotten figures. The ceiling was lost in the gloom, and the only light came from the blue runes on Raven's sword and the faint, flickering red glow of the countdown timer hovering in the corner of Reza's vision.

[02:49:55]

"Seriously?" Reza panted, scrambling to his feet and pulling his rusted shortsword. "Do you guys get a bonus for overtime, or are you just naturally this annoying? We’re in a ancient, dangerous tomb. Can't we just call a temporary truce?"

"I don't negotiate with systemic contaminants," Raven replied.

He lunged.

The speed of the attack was terrifying. Raven didn't just swing his sword; he moved with it, becoming a blur of steel and dark iron. Reza barely had time to bring his shortsword up to parry.

CLANG!

The impact was like blocking a runaway carriage. The rusted blade in Reza’s hand shattered into a dozen useless pieces, the shockwave of the blow traveling up his arm and nearly dislocating his shoulder. He was thrown backward, his boots skidding across the dusty stone floor until he slammed hard into the base of one of the massive statues.

"Reza!" Nara cried out from the far end of the corridor, her voice weak and laced with pain as Elara held her upright.

"Stay back!" Reza choked out, spitting a mouthful of dust.

Raven didn't give him a moment to breathe. He stepped forward, raising his left hand, his fingers splayed. The runes on his gauntlets flared with a blinding, sterile white light.

"Skill: Debt Breaker," Raven whispered.

A heavy, oppressive pressure descended on the corridor. It wasn't physical; it was systemic. It felt as though a cold, dead hand had reached into Reza's chest and severed a vital nerve.

Instantly, the red holographic interface of the Usury System sputtered. The glowing red borders cracked, the text dissolving into meaningless, glittering pixels. The countdown timer in the corner of his eye vanished. The ambient warmth of the system’s cheat-like presence was completely gone, leaving Reza feeling cold, hollow, and terrifyingly human.

"Warning," Aurelia's voice echoed in his head, sounding faint, static-heavy, and incredibly distant. "System connection disrupted. Core functions offline. You are on your own, debtor..."

"Oh, you've got to be kidding me," Reza muttered, his throat dry. He stared at his empty hands. He had no weapon, no active skills, and no way to summon a magical crate of explosive rubber chickens. He was just a baseline human facing an elite, heavily armored inquisitor of the Eastern Kingdom.

"The Usury System is a parasite," Raven said, his greatsword rising for a vertical execution strike. "It feeds on your desperation, and it will feed on your sister until there is nothing left. I am doing you a favor by ending this now."

"Ending my life is not a favor!" Reza yelled.

As the greatsword came down in a lethal, vertical arc, Reza didn't try to block. He threw himself to the side, rolling desperately across the stone floor. The blade cleaved through the air where his head had been a millisecond prior, slamming into the stone floor with a deafening CRACK that sent a spiderweb of fissures through the bedrock.

Reza scrambled up, his hands frantically searching the dusty floor. His fingers brushed against something metallic and heavy resting at the feet of the statue he had crashed into. It was an ancient, discarded shield—tarnished bronze and heavy iron, thick with centuries of grime.

He didn't hesitate. He grabbed the handle, hauling the massive weight up just as Raven pivoted, delivering a brutal, horizontal slash.

BANG!

The greatsword collided with the ancient shield. The sheer force of the impact drove Reza to his knees, his muscles screaming in protest. The bronze groaned under the pressure, but the ancient metal held. Reza's teeth rattled, his vision swimming with dark spots, but he forced himself to stand, using his shoulder to shove the shield forward and throw Raven off balance.

"Elara!" Reza shouted, his voice hoarse. "I can't hold him off forever! Find a way out of here!"

"I'm working on it!" Elara called back, her eyes spinning with frantic data-streams as she ran her hands along a metallic console near a massive, sealed blast door at the end of the hall. "The security protocols are ancient, and the power grid is fluctuating! Just don't die!"

Raven recovered instantly, his eyes narrowing as he looked at the ancient shield. "Impressive. You have decent reflexes for a commoner. But physical endurance has its limits."

Raven unleashed a flurry of strikes. Clang! Clang! Clang!

Each blow was a masterpiece of martial precision, targeting Reza's blind spots, forcing him to shift the heavy shield constantly. Reza’s arms felt like lead. The skin on his palms was raw and bleeding, the heavy vibration of the impacts tearing at his muscles. He was being pushed back step by step, his back drawing closer to the sealed blast door.

He needed an opening. He needed a way to break Raven's focus and reset the system connection.

Through the haze of pain and adrenaline, Reza’s eyes flicked to the wall behind Raven. A network of thick copper pipes, green with age and vibrating with intense heat, ran along the masonry. They were hissed whispers of ancient machinery—high-pressure steam lines designed to power the vault's ancient mechanisms.

Raven lunged, his greatsword thrusting forward like a spear, aiming to pierce right through the center of the shield.

Reza didn't block it head-on. Instead, he angled the shield, letting the tip of the runic blade slide off the bronze surface with a screeching scrape. He pivoted his body, using the momentum of Raven’s forward thrust to slip past him.

With a roar of pure exertion, Reza swung the heavy edge of the ancient shield directly into the rusty brass valve of the steam pipe behind Raven.

SMASH!

The brass valve sheared off.

A deafening, high-pitched shriek filled the corridor as a massive, blinding cloud of scalding, high-pressure steam erupted directly into the back of Raven’s head and neck.

Raven gasped, a rare sound of genuine pain escaping his lips as the superheated vapor cooked his exposed skin and fogged his visor. He stumbled forward, his vision completely obscured, his stance breaking as he instinctively raised his armored gauntlets to shield his face.

The pressure of the "Debt Breaker" nullification field instantly wavered.

The air around Reza grew warm. The red static in his peripheral vision flared back to life with a violent, triumphant spark.

[SYSTEM CONNECTION RESTORED.]

[CURRENT DEBT STATUS: CRITICAL. TIME REMAINING: 02:47:12]

"Oh, thank goodness," Aurelia’s voice chimed in, sounding entirely too cheerful for the situation. "I was almost worried I’d have to find a new client. That was incredibly messy, Reza. I love it. Now, do you want to buy something?"

"No time!" Reza yelled, his eyes locking on the massive stone statue right next to the blinded, disoriented Raven. He didn't have the credit for a skill, but he had a plan. "I'm going to use the environment!"

Reza dropped the heavy shield, sprinting toward the blinded inquisitor. "Hey, over here, you oversized tin can!" he shouted, throwing a loose stone that clattered against Raven's breastplate.

Raven, half-blinded and furious, turned toward the sound. Through the swirling steam, he saw Reza’s silhouette standing directly in front of the largest, most ornate statue in the hall—a representation of a crowned king holding an offering bowl.

With a roar of frustration, Raven lunged, his greatsword gathering a massive surge of blue runic energy. He swung the blade in a devastating, horizontal cleave, intending to cut Reza in half.

Reza threw himself flat onto the stone floor.

The runic greatsword sheared directly through the torso of the ancient stone statue with a clean, terrifying ease. The massive top half of the statue slid off its pedestal, crashing onto the stone floor with a thunderous boom.

But the moment the statue’s offering bowl shattered, a deep, mechanical click echoed from the floorboards beneath their boots.

The blue runes on the walls instantly shifted, turning a vibrant, warning amber. A low, grinding rumble vibrated through the bedrock, much louder and deeper than before.

"Oh, no," Elara gasped from the end of the hall, her hands freezing on the console. "You didn't just break the statue, Reza. You just tripped the vault's ultimate defense grid!"

The eyes of every statue in the corridor suddenly flared with a bright, liquid-yellow light. From the ornate grates lining the ceiling and the high walls, a sizzling, heavy, golden liquid began to pour. It wasn't water. It was molten gold—the vault's scorched-earth mechanism to incinerate and seal away intruders forever.

The heat in the corridor spiked instantly, turning the air into a suffocating furnace. The liquid gold hissed as it hit the stone floor, vaporizing the ancient dust and leaving behind a glowing, bubbling lake of pure, molten death that began to rise rapidly.

Raven stumbled back, his boots splashing into the edge of the rising gold. The armor on his feet began to hiss, the metal warping under the extreme heat. He glared through the steam and the heat haze at Reza, realizing he had been tricked.

"This isn't over, scavenger," Raven growled, forced to retreat backward toward the entrance of the corridor to avoid being dissolved alive.

"I really, really hope it is!" Reza screamed, scrambling to his feet. The floor behind him was already filling with the glowing golden liquid.

He turned and sprinted toward Elara and Nara. The heavy stone blast door at the end of the hall was slowly beginning to slide downward, its ancient gears grinding as the automated lockdown sequence engaged.

"Elara! The door!" Reza yelled.

"The manual bypass is jammed, but it’s closing anyway!" Elara shouted back, desperately trying to hold the heavy metal slab up with a crowbar she had found in the debris, but the ancient mechanism was too strong. The gap was shrinking fast—four feet, three feet.

Reza didn't stop. He ran through the scorching heat, the air burning his lungs. He reached them just as the molten gold began to pool at their heels.

With a final, desperate surge of adrenaline, Reza scooped Nara’s limp body into his arms. He grabbed Elara by her silk collar, pulling her with him as he launched his body forward, diving headfirst through the shrinking gap beneath the descending stone door.

They tumbled through the dust, rolling hard onto the cold, hard stone of the chamber beyond.

SLAM!

The massive blast door hit the floor with a deafening, metallic thud, sealing shut with a heavy, airtight hiss.

On the other side, the muffled sound of boiling, liquid gold and the distant, fading echo of Raven's boots were cut off completely.

Reza lay on his back, gasping for air that didn't taste like steam and molten metal. The chamber around them was pitch black, silent, and incredibly cold. He reached out in the dark, his fingers finding Nara’s hand. Her skin was freezing, the red static of her debt still pulsing weakly, but she was still breathing.

Above them, in the dark, a small, red countdown timer flickered back into view.

[02:44:03]

They were safe from Raven, and they were safe from the gold.

But as Reza looked around the absolute, suffocating darkness of the deepest chamber, a chilling realization settled in.

They were completely trapped.

She grabbed Elara by the silk-clad arm, dragging the princess toward the mangled remains of the carriage. Elara, usually a vision of regal composure, looked at the charging hunters and then at Reza with wide, unblinking eyes."You are going to fight them with... what exactly?"
