Annabel stood in front of the mirror. She was squinting at her reflection.

“Roman,” she called from the bedroom, “is this too much for just going to a sandwich shop?”

Roman’s voice came from the living room. “You could wear a bathrobe and they’d still give us free cookies.”

“I’m serious!”

He peeked around the corner, took one look at her and angled his head. “Okay. First, you look amazing. Second, what sandwich place are we going to where you’re trying to seduce the owner?”

Annabel narrowed her eyes. “I don’t try to seduce people. I just exist.”

Roman laughed and stepped in, then he brushed his hands across her waist. “Then I’ll be the guy standing next to you, existing harder.”

“You’re ridiculous.”

“And you’re beautiful.”

She tried not to smile, but her face betrayed her. “Ugh. Stop saying things that make me forgive your nonsense.”

He kissed her cheek. “Too late. You’re already soft.”

Roman himself got ready and they left for the sandwich shop.

The sandwich shop was small and tucke

  • The Receipt

Freya's phone pinged on the nightstand in the guest room. She turned around slowly, stretched, and reached over to pick up the phone. She was expecting another empty check in from Annabel. But she opened their chat to find a different text. It said: "I think I've found something. Aunt Jan has a private shell account. She’s been transferring regular payments to a media handler, so I guess she's paying someone to post those blogs. I need you to put in more pressure, but not too much, so she wouldn't know you’re onto her. Okay? We are getting close."Freya blinked at the message, sat up, and read it again twice. Her stomach twisted out of anticipation. She stared out through the window, already thinking of what she could do. Aunt Jan didn’t bend that easily. But she liked being admired. She liked being the smartest person in the room. And if Freya could plant the right questions, maybe Janice would hand them the next piece without even realizing it.The morning routine played out like i

  • Helping From The Sidelines

It had been two days since Freya left for Janice’s house. In those two days, Annabel had not left the apartment once. The windows remained closed, the house was dim, and every outside sound made her body tense immediately. She wasn’t paranoid but she didn’t intend to be seen before she was ready. It was mid-morning now and the apartment was still as usual. The only noise around was the occasional notification from her burner phone which she kept close to her at all times. She hadn’t heard anything suspicious from Freya yet. And that was a good thing, but it also meant the burden of progress was on her now. And today, she had decided where to begin. She contemplated calling Roman, but decided against it. It would be better if she found a way to silently help him, then they could reconcile. Actions spoke louder than words, so that way, he would know she still loved him.She opened her laptop and returned to the folder she had built the night before, which contained screenshots of the bl

  • Delete Her Name

Roman hadn’t slept properly in two nights. He had dozed off in the armchair in his study at some point between midnight and sunrise, only to wake up. He went to the dining table with his laptop and sat down there like a zombie. He was just staring emptily at the unfinished email he was trying to draft on the screen of the laptop. It said:"To: Board of Directors – Hale InternationalSubject: Internal Restructure — Legal Adjustments Pending."He had not typed anything else yet. He was too absentminded to focus on anything now, especially that email. His phone even rang, but he ignored it. After an hour of being reluctant with his preparation, he was at the office. Kade met him near the elevators. He was holding two files and wearing an expression of concern and worry. “Good day today?” Kade asked, falling in step beside him.Roman gave a short nod. “Define good.”“You look like you fought a bear and got severely beaten.”Roman didn’t respond. He walked into his office, dropped his ba

  • Back To Jan

The sky was cloudy when Freya stepped out of the Uber. She adjusted the strap of her bag and crossed the quiet street. Janice’s house stood at the edge of the street. From the outside, it looked peaceful and normal, but Freya knew better. She took a deep breath at the gate before she rang the door bell.It took a minute before door flew open to reveal Janice who was dressed in a navy blue blouse and short slacks. She was barefoot and had a glass of something pink in hand. She could not hide her surprise when she saw Freya. “Freya?” she called out. Freya gave a sheepish smile. “Hi, Aunt Jan.”Janice blinked. “I… wasn’t expecting—what brings you here?”Freya shrugged a little. “I was in the area. And I don’t know… I guess I wanted to talk.”Janice stared for a moment, then stepped aside and opened the door wider. “Well, come in. You’re lucky I haven’t replaced you with a less flaky niece.”Freya smiled weakly and stepped in.The inside of Janice’s house smelled like citrus and faint p

  • Sister Plans

It was just past noon, and the apartment was quiet. Annabel sat with her legs crossed on Freya’s couch. Her eyes were fixed on the wall, where a faint crack traced the corner of the ceiling.Freya came out from her bedroom in a black tank top and shorts, drying her hands on a small towel. She had taken a quick shower, claiming she needed to “wash off the dust of other people’s nonsense after work.” Annabel had not asked what that meant. She looked over at her sister, whose stillness was unusual.“Annabel, are you okay?” Freya asked. She threw the towel over to the back of a chair.Annabel blinked like she had been underwater. “Yeah, I'm fine, I was just thinking.”Freya sat on the floor across her and took the bowl of strawberries which was on the table into her lap. She picked one and bit into it. She was watching her sister over the rim of her arm.“About?”Annabel sighed. “Everything. What we’re up against, what Janice might be doing, and what we even can do.”“Well,” Freya said, “

  • Back To Her

Annabel was sitting alone in the corner of a quiet book shop in southern Spain. It was midday and the sun warmed the windows. There was a novel she had barely even opened on her lap. The coffee she bought had also gone cold. She was restless. She had just seen the articles about her from home, because it had somehow found its way to her. She had left because she needed space, not that she had planned to vanish. She just wanted to stop feeling like a chess piece in someone else’s game. But even here, with the strangers all around, peace seemed to remain just out of reach. Her phone vibrated on the table again. It was the same old friend she had not heard from in ages who had sent her the first link to one of the blogs who had texted her again with yet another link to another blog about her. Annabel blinked once, then tapped the link attached to the message and the browser opened. Annabel's mouth went open in another round of shock again as she read the headline which said:“Vanished
