Helpless

Max sighed as he walked into the hospital. He was looking gloomy at the moment and one could see the sadness in his eyes.

"Mr. Max, I'm sorry, but there's nothing we can do, we'll need to carry out the surgery for her as quickly as possible, it'll be advisable for you to do it before it's too late."

The doctor's words rang in Max's ears as he walked along the corridor to his mother's ward. The ward wasn't a big one, neither was it a small one.

He had requested his mother to be put here so she could at least have some peace. Even though Max had some problems footing the hospital bills, he never complained.

He didn't know how he was going to get the money for her operation, there must be something he could do. But it was helpless, no matter who he turned to for help, they didn't agree to help him because he was poor and was afraid he wouldn't be able to pay back.

Max couldn't let his mother die, she had done a lot of things for him. Tears couldn't help but stream down his face when he remembered how many jobs she had to take on to feed him.

The bullying and insults she had to endure just to feed, clothe and send him to school. He could remember the smile on his mother's face even if she was tired. She would make sure he eats before she ate even if it meant that she was going to go hungry.

His mother never complained about the hardships of life nor did she scold him when he did anything wrong, all she would do was look at him with a reassuring smile.

What else could he ask for, not her? He just couldn't allow her to die. He wanted to save her but he had no money. How much of a son was he worth? He didn't deserve to be her son in any way.

Max couldn't hello but rub his mother's bony and rough hands which were beginning to go cold at the moment. The tears which he had forcefully stopped came rushing down again. He just couldn't control his emotions.

It seems he had no other choice at this moment but to do what he had been unwilling to do. But was it worth it? Well, it seems like he had no other choice at this moment.

"Max, here you are." A voice came just as Max was about to pick up his phone and make a call and a lady walked in staring at Max in disgust. Her voice sounded cheerful, but it was laced with disdain and one could feel it.

"What are you doing here?" Max asked with a smile staring at the beautiful lady standing in front.

She was his wife's assistant and she had a rather good face and body, but was still miles away when compared to his wife. Why was his mother-in-law pestering him to divorce her daughter?

It was because her daughter was the most beautiful lady in the city and she wanted to marry her off to one of the prestigious families so she could gain their favor, Max wasn't worthy of her in any way.

Max could feel the disdain in the woman's eyes but he could care less about it, he was already used to such gazes so he wasn't too bothered about it.

"Your wife asked me to give you this, she said you're not allowed to refuse it." The woman sighed and passed the bag to Max feeling as though he was the most useless man she had ever met.

How dare he ask his wife to give him money, he had made her borrow money from a loan shark. Who knew what was good to happen next?

"What's inside?" Max frowned.

"That's fifty thousand dollars, it's your wife's savings, and a little of it she borrowed."

Max froze upon hearing this. He couldn't believe that his wife would try to help him out in this situation. His heart was in turmoil and he didn't know what to do.

"She would have come herself, but she's kind of busy with some projects." The woman said apologetically when she saw Max's expression, she had mistaken it for something else which made her even displease Max even more.

How dare he complain that his wife didn't come by herself when she had already tired herself out borrowing money and giving up her life-saving.

If it was, she would have done away with such a useless man who was so poor that he couldn't afford a set of proper clothing and shoes. She had the urge to cover her nose in disgust but had no choice but to hold back.

She would be in trouble if the useless man should tell his wife what she did which she was trying to avoid.

"Thanks for bringing me this." Max smiled and nodded.

He wasn't surprised his wife didn't come, it wasn't that she was busy, but if she came herself, she might be caught by her mother which would put them both in trouble.

"I'll be leaving now." The woman smiled and walked out of the ward as if something was chasing her away.

Mark sighed as he looked at the bag of money brought by his wife's assistant. He couldn't help but shake in the head. In their three years of marriage, she had always been the one taking care of him.

Never once did he do something for her, all he did was to request and she would give him without complaining. He had expected her to leave him many years ago, but she stuck to him like gum.

She would even defend him anytime her mother tried to humiliate him and all he would do was to watch.

He had been a coward all his life and wasn't even able to stand up for his wife anytime she needed him. All he was able to do was to watch.

This time, everything was going to change. He was going to give her the world. She had proved that she deserved his love and he was going to repay her for all she had done.

She was never going to suffer from any ridicule, he would make sure to protect her at all costs.

Also, there was no way he could bring himself to use the money she had saved and borrowed, he would rather return it to her and resort to other means than use the money she worked so hard to earn.
