Lucien didn't call his mother.
He stood outside her apartment building for ten minutes, staring at the third-floor window where a single light burned. It was 6:30 in the morning. She would be up soon, getting ready for the bakery. Her routine never changed.
He couldn't do it.
Every time he tried to imagine the conversation, the words collapsed in his mouth. How could he explain something he didn't understand himself? She would think he'd lost his mind. Or worse, she would think he'd gotten involved in something dangerous.
Maybe both.
He walked away.
The hotel room felt smaller when he returned. The golden interface glowed on his phone, patient as always. He ignored it and lay on the bed, staring at the ceiling.
At 7:15, his phone rang.
It was her.
"Lucien? Where are you? I've been calling all night."
Her voice was tight with worry. The sound of it made his chest ache.
"I'm fine, Mom. I just had a rough night."
"Rough how? What happened?"
He closed his eyes. "Chloe and I broke up."
Silence.
"Oh, honey." The tenderness in her voice nearly broke him. "I'm so sorry."
"It's fine."
"It's not fine. You loved that girl."
"Apparently love wasn't enough."
Another silence. He could hear her breathing on the other end, slow and heavy. She was probably sitting at the kitchen table now, holding the phone with both hands like she always did when she was worried.
"Come home," she said. "I'll make breakfast. We can talk."
"I can't right now."
"Why not?"
Because I just had thirty thousand dollars appear in my bank account. Because my phone is talking to me. Because it knows Dad's name.
"I need some time to think," he said instead.
"Lucien." Her voice sharpened. "Tell me what's going on. Are you in trouble?"
He opened his eyes. The phone in his hand felt warm, like it was listening.
"Mom, did Dad ever mention anything about money? Like a special account or an investment?"
The silence that followed was different. Heavier.
"Why are you asking about your father?"
"I just need to know."
"No." Her voice was clipped now. "We don't talk about him. You know that."
"I know, but—"
"But what? He left us, Lucien. He walked out that door and never came back. Whatever he was doing, whatever secret he was keeping, it destroyed our family. I won't let it destroy you too."
The words stung. She thought his father had abandoned them. She didn't know about the system. She didn't know that Elias Vance had left something behind for his son.
"Mom, I think Dad was involved in something important. Something that might still be affecting us."
"Stop it." Her voice cracked. "Just stop. I can't do this right now."
"Please, just listen—"
"No! You listen!" She was crying now. He could hear the tears in her voice. "I spent fifteen years trying to protect you from whatever your father was caught up in. I moved us across the country. I changed our phone number. I worked three jobs so you and Maya could have a normal life. Don't throw that away chasing ghosts."
Lucien sat up. His own eyes were burning.
"I'm not chasing ghosts. I'm trying to understand why my father disappeared."
"Your father disappeared because he chose to."
"Did he?"
The question hung in the air.
"What does that mean?" she whispered.
"Nothing. I'm sorry. I shouldn't have said anything."
"Lucien, tell me what's going on."
"I can't. Not yet."
"You're scaring me."
"I know. I'm sorry." He took a shaky breath. "I just need you to trust me right now. Can you do that?"
The silence stretched. He could hear her crying softly on the other end.
"Your father's last words to me," she said finally, "were 'Tell Lucien to be careful who he trusts.'"
The words hit him like ice water.
"He said that?"
"Every day for a month before he left. The same thing. Over and over. Like he was trying to warn us without telling us the truth."
"Did he say anything else?"
"No." Her voice was hollow now. "Just that one sentence. Then one morning he was gone."
Lucien's phone vibrated. The system's interface flickered at the edge of the screen, trying to get his attention. He ignored it.
"Mom, I need to ask you something else."
"What?"
"Did Dad ever mention a company called Apex Capital Management?"
The line went quiet. Not the silence of someone thinking. The silence of someone who had stopped breathing.
"Mom?"
"I have to go." Her voice was strange. Flat. Scared.
"Wait—"
"The bakery opens in an hour. I need to get ready."
"Please, just tell me if you've heard that name before."
"I haven't." Too quick. Too defensive. "I have to go, Lucien."
The line clicked. She was gone.
Lucien stared at the phone. His heart was pounding. She knew something. She was hiding something. And now she was terrified.
He called Maya next. His little sister answered on the second ring.
"Lucien? Do you know what time it is?"
He smiled despite himself. "Sorry. I just wanted to check on you."
"I'm fine. Med school is killing me, but I'm fine." She paused. "How are you? You sound weird."
"It's been a long night."
"Did something happen with Chloe?"
He closed his eyes. "We broke up."
"Oh, thank God."
"What?"
"I mean, I'm sorry you're hurting. But she was never right for you, Lucien. She treated you like a wallet, not a boyfriend."
"She left me because I didn't have enough money."
"Then she's an idiot. And you're better off without her."
He laughed softly. Maya always knew how to cut through the noise.
"Thanks, Maya."
"Always. Now get some sleep. You sound like death."
They hung up. Lucien sat on the bed, the phone cradled in his hands.
His family was safe. His mother was scared. His sister was clueless. And somewhere in the shadows, something was watching.
The system's interface returned.
NOTIFICATION: FAMILIAL SAFETY PROTOCOL AVAILABLE.

Lucien's blood turned to ice.
He had never told the system their names.
"What are you?" he whispered.
The system didn't answer. The golden letters just glowed, waiting for his response.
His hands were shaking as he typed: "Who sent you?"
USER AUTHORIZATION INSUFFICIENT.
The same phrase. Always the same phrase.
But now, for the first time, he understood the deeper meaning.
The system wasn't just protecting information. It was protecting something else.
Something that was still out there.
Watching.
Waiting.
And it knew exactly who he loved.

The First Major Asset
"You're going to buy the building?"His mother's voice cracked with disbelief. She stood behind the bakery counter, her hands gripping the edge like the floor might drop out from under her.Lucien looked up from his phone. "I'm going to try.""Lucien, the building costs more than the loan. The landlord has been trying to sell for years.""I know.""Then how? Where is this money coming from?"He didn't answer. The truth was too complicated. Too insane.Instead, he pulled up the property listing on his phone. The building was old, four stories tall with retail space on the ground floor and three apartments above. The asking price was $1.2 million. But the lease buyout was different. The landlord, a tired old man named Mr. Kowalski, had been trying to offload the property for years. The remaining lease on the bakery space had a buyout clause. $40,000 to take over the full lease. That was the first step."Mom, I need to make some calls," he said. "Can you give me a few minutes?"She hesit
The Bakery Threat
The bakery was already closed when Lucien arrived. The sign on the door read "VANCE'S DELIGHTS" in faded gold lettering. His mother had painted it herself fifteen years ago, right after they moved here. Right after his father disappeared. He stood across the street, watching the empty storefront. The morning rush should have been in full swing. Coffee brewing. Customers lining up. His mother behind the counter, smiling through her exhaustion. But the lights were off. The door was locked. And his mother was inside, sitting alone at one of the small tables, staring at a piece of paper. His chest tightened. He crossed the street and knocked on the glass. She looked up. Her eyes were red. She'd been crying."Lucien." She unlocked the door with trembling hands. "I told you not to come.""I had to see you."She stepped back, letting him in. The familiar smell of flour and sugar wrapped around him. But underneath it was something else. Fear."What's going on?" he asked. She didn't answer. Sh
