Chapter 1

The Last Straw

"You're breaking up with me... here? Now?"

The words left Lucien's mouth before his brain could catch up. The cold evening air bit through his thin jacket, but that wasn't why he was shaking.

Chloe wouldn't meet his eyes. She stared at the sidewalk, at the gleaming windows of the restaurant behind her, at the silver bracelet on her wrist that he definitely didn't buy her. Anywhere but at him.

"I'm sorry," she whispered. "I didn't want it to happen this way."

"Then why is it happening at all?"

She flinched at his tone. Good. Let her flinch. Let her feel even a fraction of what was tearing through his chest right now.

A black sedan pulled up to the curb. The window rolled down smoothly, revealing Julian Sterling's perfect smile and perfect hair and perfect everything.

"Chloe, darling. We're going to be late for our reservation."

Lucien's stomach turned. Julian didn't even acknowledge him. He just sat there in his thousand-dollar suit, looking at Chloe like she was already his property.

"Just give me a minute," Chloe said over her shoulder.

"Of course, love. Take all the time you need."

The window rolled back up. Lucien could still see Julian's silhouette through the tinted glass. Waiting. Patient. Superior.

Three years. Three years he had given this woman everything he had. Late nights working overtime to pay for her graduate school applications. Missing his sister's birthday to help Chloe move apartments. Holding her when she cried about her mother's illness. Defending her against coworkers who called her cold. Loving her even when she pushed him away.

And this was how it ended. On a street corner. While another man waited in a luxury car.

"I don't understand," Lucien said. His voice cracked. He hated that it cracked. "Last week you said we were fine. You said we'd figure it out together."

Chloe finally looked at him. Her eyes were red, but there were no tears. Just exhaustion. Maybe relief.

"Last week I was lying to myself."

"Lying about what?"

"About us. About this." She gestured between them. "About whether love is actually enough."

The words hit him like a physical blow. He actually took a step back.

"Love has to be enough," he said. "It's all we have."

"No, Lucien. That's all you have."

She said it so matter-of-factly. Like she was explaining something simple to a child. Like his poverty was just an inconvenient fact she had finally decided to stop ignoring.

"I need stability. Security. A future I can actually plan for." Chloe wrapped her arms around herself. "With you, I'm always waiting for the next disaster. Always terrified about rent. Always counting pennies at the grocery store. I can't live like that anymore."

"So you're choosing him." Lucien's voice was flat now. Dead. "For his money."

"I'm choosing him because he can give me what I need."

"That's the same thing."

"No." Chloe shook her head. "It's not. Julian understands me. He understands the life I want to live."

Lucien laughed. It was a bitter, broken sound. "The life you want to live? Or the life you want to be seen living?"

Anger flashed across Chloe's face. "That's not fair."

"Fair?" He stepped closer to her. "You want to talk about fair? I worked double shifts for three months so you could afford that internship in the city. I gave up my savings so your mom could see that specialist. I did everything you asked and more. And you're leaving me because I'm not rich enough?"

Chloe's jaw tightened. "You want me to feel guilty?"

"I want you to be honest."

"Fine." She lifted her chin. "I'm tired of being poor, Lucien. I'm tired of watching my friends buy houses while I clip coupons. I'm tired of pretending that struggling is romantic. It's not. It's exhausting. And I'm done."

The words hung in the air between them. Vicious. Final.

Lucien opened his mouth to respond, but nothing came out. What was there to say? She had made her choice. She had chosen comfort over connection. Money over meaning.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone. The screen lit up, showing a notification from his banking app.

Available Balance: $42.18

Forty-two dollars. That was everything he had in the world. Forty-two dollars and a heart that was currently being ripped out of his chest.

Chloe glanced at the phone. Her expression flickered with something that might have been pity. Or maybe disgust.

"Is that really all you have?" she asked quietly.

He didn't answer.

"See, this is what I'm talking about." She gestured at the phone. "You're twenty-six years old and you have forty-two dollars. How am I supposed to build a life with someone like that?"

"Someone like that." He repeated the words slowly. "Someone poor, you mean."

"Someone who can't plan for tomorrow."

"Or someone who won't abandon the people he loves when things get hard."

Chloe's face hardened. "This is exactly why I didn't want to have this conversation."

"Because I'm telling the truth?"

"Because you're being cruel."

Lucien stared at her. This woman. This stranger standing in front of him wearing his ex-girlfriend's face.

"I'm being cruel?" He shook his head. "You're leaving me for a man you barely know. A man who treats people like servants. You're standing here telling me I'm worthless because I don't have a trust fund. And I'm the one being cruel?"

Julian's voice called out from the car. "Chloe, we really must go. The chef gets terribly upset when guests arrive late."

Chloe glanced back at the car. When she turned to Lucien again, her expression had changed. She looked almost peaceful. Resolved.

"I did love you," she said. "You have to know that."

"Don't."

"I'm serious. What we had was real. But real isn't always enough."

Lucien's chest ached. The cold had seeped into his bones, and now it was in his blood, in his lungs, in every part of him.

"If this is what love looks like to you," he said quietly, "then I don't want it anymore."

Chloe held his gaze for a long moment. Then she nodded once, turned, and walked toward the car.

Julian got out to open the door for her. He finally looked at Lucien. His smile was polite, almost friendly. The smile of a man who had never lost anything in his life.

"Take care of yourself, Vance," Julian said.

Then he got in the car, and the door closed, and they drove away.

Lucien stood on the sidewalk for what felt like hours. The city moved around him. Couples walked past, holding hands. Taxis honked. A street vendor called out prices for roasted chestnuts. The world kept spinning while his entire universe collapsed.

He looked at his phone again. The notification was still there. Mocking him.

Available Balance: $42.18

Three years of love. Three years of sacrifice. Three years of believing that if he just worked hard enough, everything would work out.

And he was left with forty-two dollars and a hole in his chest that would never heal.

His phone buzzed. A text message. He expected it to be Chloe. Maybe an apology. Maybe a final goodbye.

It wasn't Chloe.

ARTHUR HAYES: Where the hell are you? Get back to the office now. We need to talk.

Lucien stared at the screen. His boss. The man who had been riding him for months, piling on impossible deadlines, criticizing every move he made.

A new feeling rose in his chest. Not sadness anymore. Something darker.

He didn't know it yet, but the worst night of his life was only just beginning.
