Zeke and Mei stood quietly, watching as the pawn broker appraised the pile of jewelry and accessories laid out before him.
There were a collection of diamond necklaces, gold bangles, four luxury designer bags, designer sunglasses and two rose-gold watches on the counter. After several long minutes of appraisal, the pawn broker cleared his throat. "These are good pieces. If they were new, the total value would amount to $250,000. However, since I'm buying them from you at a second-hand price, I'm willing to pay $150,000 for the lot." Mei frowned. "A hundred and fifty grand? That's too poor. You said it yourself they're worth a quarter of a million. Make it $200,000." "$160,000. Final offer," the broker offered. "Take it or leave it. The stock market crashed today, ma'am. You're not the only rich girl who've come here this afternoon to pawn their valuables. No other pawnbroker would offer you full price in this crisis." Mei hesitated, biting her lips. She knew he was right, but $160,000 wouldn't get her anywhere. Not in this economy. Zeke stepped forward and placed his wrist-watch on the table. "How much is this worth?" Mei turned sharply to Zeke, startled. "Zeke, isn't that the watch I got you for your birthday last year?" Zeke smiled sheepishly at her. "What can I say, I think I've grown tired of using it. Look, we need every penny we can get. If this watch is still worth at least anything, It'll go a long way to help." Mei couldn't even protest. They were very short on money. Every penny was worth everything to her. "Thank you, Zeke," She said, a small smile appearing on her face. The pawnbroker picked up the watch and examined it. He nodded in approval. "This is a Rolex Daytona. I'll offer $40,000 for it." "Huh, I got that for $50,000 last year," Mei protested. But Zeke stopped her. "Mei, it's alright. At least we've got $200,000. That's enough for now," Zeke returned his gaze back to the pawnbroker. "We'll take it. Cash." The pawnbroker grunted. "Give me five minutes." Then he disappeared into the back office to get the cash. Mei sighed, her eyes resting on the items on the counter. "We need more money, Zeke. This won't last us a week. Not with our goal in sight." Zeke hide a knowing smirk. "I don't think you need to worry about money. Who knows, you might hit the jackpot on Monday." Just then, the shop door opened, and a middle-aged man entered with two bodyguards at his heels. He walked into the pawnshop like he owned the place. He wore a navy blue tailored suit with a pair of Italian leather shoes that reflected like a mirror. His cold gray eyes rested on Mei as he approached her, smoothing his hand over his black hair slicked back, not a strand out of place. "Well, well," He said, stopping right before Mei. "If it isn't the beautiful Mei Zhao. I thought it might be you." Mei was surprised to see the newcomer. "Craig? What are you doing here?" Craig stroke his stubble jaw, his eyes restless. "I was driving by the neighborhood when I spotted your car outside this pawnshop. I had to be sure it was you so I decided to stop by and check." Craig paused as he glanced at Zeke out of the corner of his eyes. "Oh, Hi Zeke." "Hi, Craig," Zeke growled, his eyes filled with disdain. Craig was one of Mei's numerous suitors whom she rejected to marry Zeke. Unlike the other suitors who gave up after Mei rejected them, Craig was still persistent. He pursued Mei like a mad dog, always flirting openly with her and offering her the prospect of a second marriage to him. Of course Mei had rebuked him times without number but that wasn't enough to stop Craig. The man was an obsessive stalker. He was born from one of the most influential families in UFC Republic. An entitled Nepo baby. "Anyways, what are you doing here?" Craig asked, changing the subject. "It's not like you to be at a pawnshop." Mei laughed uneasily. "This is embarrassing. I guess there's no point in hiding it. You're aware of the stock crash that happened earlier today?" Craig covered his mouth in shock. "Oh my God, Mei. Don't tell me..." Mei nodded, looking away sadly. "I lost my family's entire fortune in the crash. We haven't a penny left and it's all my fault." Craig tsked in pity. "What a shame. Are you selling all your stuffs inorder to raise funds for the company?" "Yes, this wouldn't be enough but it's a start," She said. "Tomorrow, I'll start making calls to secure clients who'll be willing to invest in Zhao Dynasty. I only have four weeks to do that." Zeke didn't like how much information she was feeding Craig. He could see the bastard was already devising an idea in his mind. "Yes and we're doing fine," Zeke said, turning to Mei. "Darling, let's grab our money and leave. We have so much to do." Just then, the pawnbroker returned with bills of $200,000 in neat bundles. Craig raised his hand. "Wait, Mei. I can help you." Mei glanced sharply at Craig. "Y-You will?" "Yeah," Craig grinned. "I have a list of investors the length of my arm. I'll get you clients who would invest in Zhao Dynasty." Mei couldn't believe her eyes. "Really? I can't believe it. You'd do that for me?" "Why not," Craig chuckled. "I love to help people." Then Craig turned to the pawnbroker. "Return your cash back, Sir. The lady isn't selling her jewelry anymore." The pawnbroker shrugged. "Whatever." Then he returned back to his office. Mei approached him, her eyes filled with gratitude. "I honestly don't know how to thank you, Craig. This is too good to be true." Craig licked his lips. "I'm having dinner with some of my business associates tonight. I'd like you to come and maybe we can discuss terms." Before Mei could respond, Zeke protested. "I refuse!"Latest Chapter
The powerless hostess
Zeke looked genuinely puzzled as Raymond barked at him.“I didn’t do anything,” he said calmly. “Why are you shouting at me for?”Raymond’s face reddened with rage.“Don’t bullshit me,” he snapped. “I know you had something to do with this. Things like this don’t just happen.”Before Zeke could respond, Mei stepped forward. Her eyes flashed with anger.]“And what exactly is wrong with us getting the best room on the ship?” she demanded coldly. “Have you even seen the room you arranged for us?”She pointed back down the corridor.“It was awful. Cramped, filthy, and insulting. Even my father’s servants have better rooms than that.”Marilyn stepped forward as well.“How dare you!” she fired back. “If you’re not happy, then you can get lost! It’s my money. I rented this ship. I decide how my guests are treated!”Zeke didn’t raise his voice. He didn’t even look offended.“Unfortunately,” he said evenly, “it’s getting late. We drove four hours to get here, and I don’t feel like checking int
New orders
Zeke pushed the door open and stepped back into the room.Mei was standing by the small table, arms crossed tightly over her chest, her expression still simmering with anger. The moment she saw him, she turned sharply.“Well?” she asked. “Did you speak with Marilyn?”Zeke smiled faintly, completely at ease. “No,” he said. “I didn’t waste my efforts on her.”Mei blinked. “Then what did you do?”“I went straight to the captain,” Zeke replied calmly. “Filed a formal complaint. Told him the accommodation didn’t match the standards promised to guests of our status.”He glanced around the room once, unimpressed. “A better room should be arranged shortly.”Mei frowned, clearly unconvinced.“Zeke, this is Marilyn’s event,” she said. “Do you really think the captain would dare go against her—”Before she could finish, there was a sudden knock. The door swung open almost immediately.Three uniformed crew members rushed in, followed by a sharply dressed officer with gold trim on his sleeves. “
The shabby room
Margie stopped in front of a narrow door near the far end of the corridor. This section of the ship was noticeably quieter with just plain carpeting and dull walls. She slid the key card and pushed the door open. “This is your room.”Zeke stepped in first. The space was bleak and the air smelled faintly of cheap detergent.A single deck-style bed was bolted against the wall, narrow enough that even one person would have to sleep carefully to avoid rolling off. The mattress looked thin and stiff. Beside it sat a small square table with one chair. There were no couch, no vanity, no minibar. It looked less like a guest suite and more like a room reserved for temporary staff.Mei froze at the doorway. Her eyes slowly swept across the room, anger rising in her chest. “You’ve got to be kidding me.”She walked in then spun around to face Margie.“What is this?” Mei demanded, her voice tight. “Is this supposed to be our room?”Margie stood by the door, her expression flat. “Yes. This is you
The cruise ship
The weekend getaway turned out to be far more extravagant than Zeke expected. The “venue” Marilyn had chosen was a mid-sized luxury cruise ship—large enough to host a wedding, but small enough for an exclusive weekend getaway. The ship wasn't setting sail into the open sea. It was a short voyage where the ship would drift a few feet from the shore, circling the coastline, then returning by sundown each day. Mei tightened her fingers around Zeke’s arm as they stepped aboard the ship. At the entrance stood Marilyn, the hostess herself—draped in a sparkling rose-gold dress that screamed ‘I must outshine everyone here.’ Beside her was her daughter, Margie, who wore a pale expression. Like someone who was forced to be there. As Zeke and Mei approached, Marilyn’s face lit up with a fake smile. “Oh, Zeke! You made it. And I see you brought Mei with you.” Mei stepped forward. “It's a pleasure to meet you,” she said warmly, opening her arms to offer a polite greeting hug. But Marilyn
The getaway
Later That Afternoon, Zeke and Anna escorted the Bakers to a Private Airstrip.Jessica Baker stood beside her father's silver private jet, her suitcase already loaded, her father seated inside waiting for her.Zeke and Mei stood with her near the boarding steps. Jessica turned to Mei first, pulling her into a tight hug.“Thank you, Mei,” she whispered against her shoulder. “For everything. For forgiving me. I don’t deserve you.”Mei smiled softly, rubbing Jessica’s back. “You do. You’re my friend now. And friends take care of each other.”Jessica pulled away slightly, sniffing. “Let’s hang out soon, okay? We have so much catching up to do.”Mei chuckled. “I’ll make out time. But for now, I’ll be buried in work. Especially now that Rockechild Group has secured the oil reserves.”Jessica rolled her eyes with a weak smile. “Same here. I have a mountain of workload to climb now that Dad has lost the license rights. This is my mess. It's only fair I clean it up.”Mei reached and squeezed h
Forgiveness
The room fell into a heavy, breathless silence. Jessica’s confession lingered in the air like smoke—raw and painful. No one dared to move. No one dared to speak.Russell Baker stared at his daughter as though he was seeing her for the first time. He had never seen this side of her before. “Jessica…” he whispered under his breath. But before he could say more, something unexpected happened.Mei stepped forward, matching right up to Jessica.Jessica squeezed her eyes shut, bracing herself for a slap across the face. Her breath trembled. But instead, she felt warm arms wrap around her in an embrace.Jessica’s eyes snapped open in shock.Everyone gasped.Even Zhao Long, who stood stony-faced moments ago, blinked as if he couldn’t believe what he was seeing.Russell froze with his mouth slightly open.Jessica stood stiff in Mei’s arms.“M-Mei?” she whispered.Mei tightened the embrace.“You know the thing I hated the most about you?” she murmured, her voice gentle. “You always bottle up y
