Zeke guided Mei's silver Lexus IS300 out of Zhao Dynasty Tower's underground parking lot.
Being married to Mei, Zeke worked two jobs to prove his worth to the Zhao family. He had been a delivery man for Zhao Dynasty and his wife's private driver for three years. This made him useful to everyone since he had no academy qualifications for corporate office. Mei spoke, breaking the tension in the car. "We are selling the car, Zeke. We'll probably get $80,000 out of it. Before that, drop me off at home. I'm pawning all my jewelry." Zeke didn't like this. He glanced at her through the rear mirror. "You don't have to sell your stuff, Mei. If it's money you—" "We need the money, Zeke," Mei cut him off, her voice sharp. "If we don't sell what we have how can we survive? You do realize we don't own a penny right now." "I understand how you feel, but if it's money you need maybe I can lend you some," Zeke said softly. "I have a little savings in my account." "Oh please," Mei scoffed, raising her hand. "As if your savings would solve my problems. You earn $1,000 per week, Zeke. What good are your savings to my situation?" Zeke's grip on the wheel tightened. Her words stung him. She had never spoken to him like that before. Perhaps the pressure was getting to her. "I just want to help," Zeke muttered, steering through a sharp curve. "We are a couple. We stick up for each other. I'll help you get the money back. Whatever it takes." "Zeke, quit making a fool of yourself," she said, turning to look out the window. "It's bad enough you made that childish bet with Jason." "He was trying to discourage you," Zeke pointed out. "I had to stand up for you." "I don't need you standing up for me, Zeke," Mei said. "What I need right now is recovering my family's money, regain my position and restore my father's trust in me." Zeke clenched his jaws. "You'll have to trust me, Mei. I promise you, I'll get you that money." "On a delivery man's salary," Mei let out a bitter laugh. "Right. Thanks to your meddling, Jason had you fired." "I'd rather be unemployed than work under Jason," Zeke replied. "My wife needs me. I'll be there for her even if no one else will." Mei didn't respond. She felt touched by Zeke's resolve. He was the only one who understands her. Perhaps she was a bit hard on him. She had to take it easy with the pressure before it crushed them both. Soon, they arrived at the Zhao family's estate. The estate was a 5 acres of land with eleven private residences for each members of the Zhao family. Zeke pulled up before their villa and killed the engine. "We're home." Mei didn't wait for him to open her door. She rushed out of the car and hurried inside the house. Zeke watched her with a rising worry. The stock crash was adding so much pressure on her brain. He didn't want that pressure to get to her. Zeke glanced around to be sure he wasn't being watched. Then he pulled out his phone and initiated a FaceTime call. The screen lit up with the image of a handsome man wearing a pair of Horn-Rimmed Glasses, and donning on a Midnight Blue suit. He was seated behind a glass desk inside a large office. "Good afternoon, young master." "Spencer," Zeke said, keeping his voice low. "I believe you've heard about the stock market crash?" "It's a disaster, young master," Spencer replied. "Everybody I know lost their money. Fortunately, Rockechilds Group is unaffected by the crash. We pulled out a full week before the dip." Zeke smirked faintly. He knew he could count on Spencer to manage Rockechilds Group while he was away. "You did well, Spencer. I couldn't have asked for a better CFO," Zeke said, his voice became serious. "I'm afraid my wife wasn't so fortunate." "Yes, I'm aware," Spencer sighed, his voice softening. "Wouldn't say I blamed her. Thousands of top firms were caught off guard. It was inevitable she would lose all the money." Zeke nodded, eyeing a smudge on the rear mirror. "Spencer, I want you to prepare $80 million to be transferred to my wife's account by next Monday." Spencer raised an eyebrow. "That's not a problem, young master. But isn't a week a bit far? I can transfer the funds right now." "No," Zeke shook his head. "I want it to look as if she earned the money. If she recovers the money too soon, her family will get suspicious." "Understood, young master," Spencer said. "At your command, I'll have the money wired to her account before sunrise next week." Zeke pulled out his handkerchief, wiping the smudge from the rear mirror. "That's much better." Just then, he saw Mei stepping out of the house, dragging a brown case along with her. "Alright, Spencer. Take a hike. We'll talk soon," then he hung up just as Mei opened the rear door. "Who were you FaceTiming with?" Mei asked as she hoisted the case into the back seat. "Nobody important," He replied, turning the key in the ignition on. "Alright, where to now?" "The pawn shop," Mei said, adjusting the case beside her. The case contained all her jewelry and other valuable accessories. Zeke drove out of the estate, feeling in a good mood. He had just secured his wife $80 million just as he promised he would. All that's left is to wait until Monday next week, and the money would be hers. "I'll get through this," Mei muttered to herself. "I'll restore my family's wealth and regain my honour." Zeke stole a glance at her in the mirror, a satisfied smile lifting the corner of his lips. "I believe in you, darling." Mei and Zeke had been married for three years. Apparently, their union had been arranged by her late mother. Unlike her numerous suitors who were far more richer and successful—Zeke was a total nobody. He had no real connections, no job and no proper education. But he was kind, loving, a chef and a clean freak. These were rare qualities Mei wanted in a man. It also helped that Zeke was striking handsome, and even though he was penniless, the meticulous orderliness of his OCD made him seem disciplined. Inorder to respect her mother's dying wish, Mei married Zeke. But Zeke had a big secret nobody knew about. No one except Mei's late mother. Zeke wasn't poor. He was the sole heir of the Rockechilds family—the wealthiest conglomerate in the world.Latest Chapter
The powerless hostess
Zeke looked genuinely puzzled as Raymond barked at him.“I didn’t do anything,” he said calmly. “Why are you shouting at me for?”Raymond’s face reddened with rage.“Don’t bullshit me,” he snapped. “I know you had something to do with this. Things like this don’t just happen.”Before Zeke could respond, Mei stepped forward. Her eyes flashed with anger.]“And what exactly is wrong with us getting the best room on the ship?” she demanded coldly. “Have you even seen the room you arranged for us?”She pointed back down the corridor.“It was awful. Cramped, filthy, and insulting. Even my father’s servants have better rooms than that.”Marilyn stepped forward as well.“How dare you!” she fired back. “If you’re not happy, then you can get lost! It’s my money. I rented this ship. I decide how my guests are treated!”Zeke didn’t raise his voice. He didn’t even look offended.“Unfortunately,” he said evenly, “it’s getting late. We drove four hours to get here, and I don’t feel like checking int
New orders
Zeke pushed the door open and stepped back into the room.Mei was standing by the small table, arms crossed tightly over her chest, her expression still simmering with anger. The moment she saw him, she turned sharply.“Well?” she asked. “Did you speak with Marilyn?”Zeke smiled faintly, completely at ease. “No,” he said. “I didn’t waste my efforts on her.”Mei blinked. “Then what did you do?”“I went straight to the captain,” Zeke replied calmly. “Filed a formal complaint. Told him the accommodation didn’t match the standards promised to guests of our status.”He glanced around the room once, unimpressed. “A better room should be arranged shortly.”Mei frowned, clearly unconvinced.“Zeke, this is Marilyn’s event,” she said. “Do you really think the captain would dare go against her—”Before she could finish, there was a sudden knock. The door swung open almost immediately.Three uniformed crew members rushed in, followed by a sharply dressed officer with gold trim on his sleeves. “
The shabby room
Margie stopped in front of a narrow door near the far end of the corridor. This section of the ship was noticeably quieter with just plain carpeting and dull walls. She slid the key card and pushed the door open. “This is your room.”Zeke stepped in first. The space was bleak and the air smelled faintly of cheap detergent.A single deck-style bed was bolted against the wall, narrow enough that even one person would have to sleep carefully to avoid rolling off. The mattress looked thin and stiff. Beside it sat a small square table with one chair. There were no couch, no vanity, no minibar. It looked less like a guest suite and more like a room reserved for temporary staff.Mei froze at the doorway. Her eyes slowly swept across the room, anger rising in her chest. “You’ve got to be kidding me.”She walked in then spun around to face Margie.“What is this?” Mei demanded, her voice tight. “Is this supposed to be our room?”Margie stood by the door, her expression flat. “Yes. This is you
The cruise ship
The weekend getaway turned out to be far more extravagant than Zeke expected. The “venue” Marilyn had chosen was a mid-sized luxury cruise ship—large enough to host a wedding, but small enough for an exclusive weekend getaway. The ship wasn't setting sail into the open sea. It was a short voyage where the ship would drift a few feet from the shore, circling the coastline, then returning by sundown each day. Mei tightened her fingers around Zeke’s arm as they stepped aboard the ship. At the entrance stood Marilyn, the hostess herself—draped in a sparkling rose-gold dress that screamed ‘I must outshine everyone here.’ Beside her was her daughter, Margie, who wore a pale expression. Like someone who was forced to be there. As Zeke and Mei approached, Marilyn’s face lit up with a fake smile. “Oh, Zeke! You made it. And I see you brought Mei with you.” Mei stepped forward. “It's a pleasure to meet you,” she said warmly, opening her arms to offer a polite greeting hug. But Marilyn
The getaway
Later That Afternoon, Zeke and Anna escorted the Bakers to a Private Airstrip.Jessica Baker stood beside her father's silver private jet, her suitcase already loaded, her father seated inside waiting for her.Zeke and Mei stood with her near the boarding steps. Jessica turned to Mei first, pulling her into a tight hug.“Thank you, Mei,” she whispered against her shoulder. “For everything. For forgiving me. I don’t deserve you.”Mei smiled softly, rubbing Jessica’s back. “You do. You’re my friend now. And friends take care of each other.”Jessica pulled away slightly, sniffing. “Let’s hang out soon, okay? We have so much catching up to do.”Mei chuckled. “I’ll make out time. But for now, I’ll be buried in work. Especially now that Rockechild Group has secured the oil reserves.”Jessica rolled her eyes with a weak smile. “Same here. I have a mountain of workload to climb now that Dad has lost the license rights. This is my mess. It's only fair I clean it up.”Mei reached and squeezed h
Forgiveness
The room fell into a heavy, breathless silence. Jessica’s confession lingered in the air like smoke—raw and painful. No one dared to move. No one dared to speak.Russell Baker stared at his daughter as though he was seeing her for the first time. He had never seen this side of her before. “Jessica…” he whispered under his breath. But before he could say more, something unexpected happened.Mei stepped forward, matching right up to Jessica.Jessica squeezed her eyes shut, bracing herself for a slap across the face. Her breath trembled. But instead, she felt warm arms wrap around her in an embrace.Jessica’s eyes snapped open in shock.Everyone gasped.Even Zhao Long, who stood stony-faced moments ago, blinked as if he couldn’t believe what he was seeing.Russell froze with his mouth slightly open.Jessica stood stiff in Mei’s arms.“M-Mei?” she whispered.Mei tightened the embrace.“You know the thing I hated the most about you?” she murmured, her voice gentle. “You always bottle up y
