Chapter 250
Lyra did not panic. The human girl who would have screamed was dead. She reacted with perfect, cold calculation. She raised her hand and wove the darkness around her into two long, sharp daggers of matte-black shadow. She floated backward in the zero-gravity of the Bleed and threw the daggers directly at the Hound’s glowing white face. The daggers spun through the dark ink. They hit the Hound directly between its empty black eyes. But they did not cut it. The black shadow-daggers passed right through the creature’s head. The Null-Hound did not flinch. It did not bleed. The daggers simply dissolved into the broken white light of its body. “It is intangible,” Lyra calculated instantly. “It is not physical down here. It is just a concept of a predator. My shadow blades only cut things that have substance.”The Null-Hound crashed into Lyra. Its jaws of glowing static snapped shut on her left arm. Lyra did not feel physical pain, but she felt her code being violently ripped apart. The
Chapter 249
Lyra was trapped. The sticky, dark red meat of the Crimson Rot wrapped tightly around her black, shadow-made ankle. The biological plague was eating the darkness. It was eating her. Adam the Plumber stood a few feet away, smiling his perfect smile. He watched the red meat spread across the floor of the beautiful glass Garden Level. The red corruption turned the clean black obsidian into sick, wet flesh. Lyra did not feel human pain. The System Boy had erased her human nerves. But she felt something much worse. She felt her code breaking. She felt the heavy, disgusting meat deleting the cold, clean logic of her shadow body. “I cannot fight meat with shadows,” Lyra calculated rapidly. Her violet pinprick eyes glowed with fierce, cold panic. “I must retreat into the deep fold. I must go back to the Void-Bleed.”She did not try to pull her foot away. That was a human reaction. Instead, she focused her mind entirely on the tiny, uncorrupted piece of shadow left beneath her other foot.
Chapter 248
Lyra stood perfectly still in the shadow of a large glass tree, just twenty feet behind him. She did not speak. She had no mouth to speak with. She raised her right hand. She focused on the cold water of the darkness around her. "Shadow-Weaving," the System Boy had called it in her mind. Lyra pulled on the fold of the universe. She pulled the darkness out of the tree's shadow and wove it together in her hand. The darkness sharpened. It became a solid, physical blade of matte-black nothingness. It was a sword that absorbed light. She prepared to step out of the shadow and cut the First Sovereign’s head off. "You can come out now, little shadow," Adam said smoothly. He did not turn around. He just kept looking at the ceiling. "I know you are hiding behind the plum tree. You smell like the basement."Lyra’s violet pinprick eyes narrowed. She stepped out of the shadow. She made no sound on the glass floor. She raised the blade of darkness. Adam finally turned around. He looked at her
Chapter 247
Back in the present. Lyra sank completely into the shadow of Elijah’s throne. She remembered the feeling of the cold water. She pushed herself into the fold. Instantly, she felt the entire Obsidian Spire. The Spire was a 200-story tower made of black glass. There were thousands of lights inside it. But where there is light, there is shadow. To Lyra, the Spire was not a building anymore. It was an ocean of interconnected dark pools. She felt the shadow under a bed on the 10th floor. She felt the shadow behind a water pump on the 50th floor. She felt the shadow of a crying child in Sector 4. She was looking for Adam the Plumber. Adam’s code was bright, arrogant, and golden. He smelled like vanilla and ozone. He did not belong in the Spire. Lyra scanned the dark pools of the building. Her mind moved at the speed of thought. “There.”She found him. He was on the 150th floor. The Garden Level. Lyra did not walk down the stairs. She did not fly. She simply pushed her body through the f
Chapter 246
Lyra sank into the floor of the throne room. She did not melt like ice. She did not fall through a trapdoor. She simply stopped agreeing with the solid glass floor. A moment ago, she was standing in front of King Elijah. Now, she was sinking into the dark shadow cast by his giant, jagged throne. To Marcus and Elijah, she had vanished in a blink of an eye. But for Lyra, moving through the darkness was not instant. It was a process. It was a completely new way of existing. As she slipped down into the absolute dark, she did not hear the loud, blaring red sirens of the Spire anymore. She did not hear the heavy footsteps of the Shadow Legion running to fight the falling Drop-Pods of meat. The world went perfectly silent. She was hunting Adam the Plumber. But to hunt a god, she had to understand what she had become. Her mind flashed back to what had happened just five minutes ago, deep at the bottom of the world, inside the chaotic ink of the Void-Bleed. Five minutes ago, Lyra was ju
Chapter 245
Inside the Throne Room, Elijah was plugged into the black glass throne. His purple eyes stared blankly ahead. His Overclocked brain was analyzing the growth of the Crimson Rot in the southern oceans. Marcus stood perfectly still behind the throne, his heavy obsidian spear resting on the floor. Suddenly, the lighting in the room changed. The bright, glowing silver lines on Elijah’s body did not dim, but the shadows in the corners of the massive room suddenly grew darker. They grew longer. They stretched across the black glass floor. Marcus’s silver eye-slits flared bright white. [WARNING: ANOMALOUS ENERGY DETECTED.][THREAT LEVEL: UNKNOWN.]Marcus spun around, raising his heavy spear. The dark violet fire on the tip burned fiercely. He pointed it at a dark corner of the room. "IDENTIFY YOURSELF," Marcus boomed. Elijah did not move his body, but his multi-threaded voice echoed in the room. "Hold your weapon, Commander," Elijah said. His electric voice hummed with sudden, intense
